Re: Bridging Ethernet with OpenVPN TAP

I'd probably try and get br0 going also through NetworkManager given that you still use it The bridge is showing up in NetworkManager, but it doesn't seem to understand the kind of bridge created by this configuration. It sees the IP address I gave the bridge, but the bridge members list is empty. ...

Re: Bridging Ethernet with OpenVPN TAP

Thank you so much! I got it working with a little more tinkering. As per your advice, I tried omitting the promisc option, and Dolphin still works, so it doesn't seem to be needed. This assumes that "eth0" is in fact correct as an interface name; it's these days more usually something like "enp0s1" ...

[Solved] Bridging Ethernet with OpenVPN TAP

I'm trying to set up an unusual configuration: I need to create a TAP via OpenVPN and bridge it with my Ethernet connection for the sake of Dolphin (the GameCube/Wii emulator). Creating the TAP and bridging it is easy enough with the following incantation: sudo openvpn --mktun --dev Dolphin0 --dev-t...

Re: Import media from iPhone ?

Dukto looks like it might be a better solution than trying to use FTP, and it's free software on the Linux side, which is always a plus.

Re: Import media from iPhone ?

I've been pondering this same question, as my mother wants to be able to import photos from her iPhone without having to use Windows, and the tutorials I've read make libimobiledevice sound pretty unreliable, especially when it comes to Apple forcing iOS updates. One possible method I haven't seen m...

Re: Firewall Active But Not Doing Anything?

If I'm downloading a torrent for example, firewall is set to block all incoming connections, should this stop people downloading from me or becuase I have initiated the original download, does this allow the connections? The short answer is no. The long answer requires knowing how BitTorrent works....

Re: Deleted files

The delete option is just warning you that it bypasses the trash can, so you can't simply "undelete" a file that you removed this way. I don't think it has anything to do with "securely" deleting a file, i.e. overwriting its contents with garbage.

Re: Windows 10 spying and data collection can be stopped with Virtual Machine? [SOLVED]

If you're going to the trouble of using a VM, I'm not sure why you'd want to battle with Windows 10 when you could just install an earlier and less invasive version of Windows, instead. That way, you don't have to go to extreme measures, such as preventing the VM from accessing your network.

Re: Windows 10 spying and data collection can be stopped with Virtual Machine? [SOLVED]

Windows 10 has to be running in order to send telemetry, so as long as you boot Mint instead of Windows, it can't send anything.

Re: Just a possibly good idea or not in teaching new users to post.

I'm not necessarily advocating for the implementation of such a harsh system; my point is merely that if your goal is to control the influx of people who post questions without reading the forum's best practices documentation that there are ways to force them to do so. ;)

Re: Just a possibly good idea or not in teaching new users to post.

I don't think that would work, because people would not keep it up to date and/or have more than one computer, and so the results would often be misleading. An alternative might be to put new users into a group that can only post in a "new users" forum. In this forum, the user is required to make a...

Re: Just a possibly good idea or not in teaching new users to post.

If you find yourself helping people with the same problems on a regular basis, you might consider contributing to the tutorial section with a guide on how to troubleshoot that particular problem. Not all problems can be answered in FAQ format, because there are so many factors that can influence a u...

Re: Issue with playing certain Flash games on Chromium

If every other website still uses Flash correctly, then it's probably a bug with this version of Chromium or a malformed webpage, so you'd have to either roll back to the old Chromium version that was working, file a bug report with Chromium, ask the webmaster to fix whatever's broken, or use a diff...

Re: Issue with playing certain Flash games on Chromium

I looIt's set to ask to run flash. The alternative is to completely block flash. If there's no option to run Flash automatically, then that would indicate that you don't have the latest Flash version, I think. When a Flash update comes out, you are forced to confirm the use of Flash each time until...

That's what the grub menu is for. It should list both Mint and Fedora so you can pick which OS to boot.

Re: Linux Mint Live USB with Persistent Partition

I tried multiple programs to get Mint to persist, and I don't think I ever got the partition method to work. I did get the persistence file option to work once, but it was a pain, because I had to modify the boot parameter to add --persistent every time I booted the USB, or Mint would boot into a vi...

Re: Display brightness doesn't dim to lowest before turn off

Have you checked the type of your backlight? Open a terminal, and then type (or copy/paste) these commands: cd /sys/class/backlight ls The ls command should list a single folder name that will vary depending upon the brand of your laptop and video card, e.g. "thinkpad_backlight" for a Lenovo ThinkPa...

Re: How does PC boot up with brand new second hard drive?

You would need to research which key you have to press on the UEFI logo to enter the configuration, and then look for the boot order to see which drive has priority for booting. Some UEFI have a "quick select" option that lets you decide which drive to boot from for the current session only, so that...
