Re: Weird bug that makes Mint unusable

Don't give up yet

What is the output of

Code: Select all

lspci -k | grep -EA3 'VGA|3D|Display'
Before your system becomes unusable, can you get an internet connection working on a tty (outside the desktop)?

Re: New in town

Welcome to the forums and to Linux in general. I never used Unity, I saw it, got very scared and ran away. You can get used to the CLI, it's not as hard as it looks like, but nowadays you rarely need it. Linux has changed a lot. You'll be fine if you just do your average, daily computing : Make back...

Re: How do I mess with someone on my wireless network?

Asking for help about how to damage someone... So is this help now or what it is? Why can't you have just a chat about the situation, and clarify you might take action if nothing changes? Not a chat between just the two of you, but among at least three or more people. You might mess with his interne...

Re: Firejailing Claws-Mail

There must be others experiencing the same issue then? If it is so, and the developers have acknowledge this problem, they might be working on it already. You can always try asking them. Or google, if all else fails.
Good luck.

Re: Opinion: What is the biggest single hurdle keeping Linux becoming more "mainstream"?

I think the biggest hurdle is the thought that " if this doesn't work, I can always go back to Windows ". If a person has a fallback option, that option will most likely be chosen during periods of frustration. Not everyone operates the way you've described. Some might like the challenge of trying ...

Re: Career 'Change'

Sure, it looks good. I just wanted to know if someone here had done it, and if their future employeers valued this effort. I've already done my fair share of installs, plus normal admin tasks already at the workplace. Nothing too fancy, just getting the job done (as I do at home). Most of future emp...

Re: Firejailing Claws-Mail

Have you tried this? https://firejail.wordpress.com/documentation-2/building-custom-profiles/ Looks complex, I may have to try that if all else fails. There is already a claws-mail profile though. I may try editing that. Cheers The link I gave you is for a custom profile, but I'm sure you'll find t...

Re: need help installing a Windows application + WINE

When I attempt to install WINE via Synaptic, it only wants to remove one package: libgles1-mesa, but the 'To be installed' list includes libgles2-mesa. Yep, upgrade... However, Synaptic reports another 3 dozen or so packages that will be upgraded. These appear to be the same ones that Software Mana...

Re: Problem connecting to a VPN

For Kernel : I'm not sure , I fear lost some hardware driver .... I stick to Linux Mint because of its proper Kernel for my RealTec network adapter . The Linux kernel is different from what you call 'drivers'. In essence there is nothing wrong with a kernel. There are no 'right' kernels, just a ker...

Re: need help installing a Windows application + WINE

I need to install HeidiSQL so I can access a remote database. Some fine tunning of WINE might be needed then, but first you need to get WINE up and running. I attempted to install WINE using Program Manager, but I got this warning message: "This will remove the following packages", followed by a li...

Re: can't install linux mint

Hai 0h, hai... i have windows already installed on my laptop, and it has 50 gb unallocated space in "logical drive"... Good to know your disk has some free space. Afaik 10GB is mandatory for 18.2, and if you are trying 17 it could be even less than that. You've got the space, so be happy... always ...

I recommend it too. The introduction to Vi is hilarious.

You might want to check 'Cookbooks' later. You can even learn by reading them, like some people learned languages on the past, just by reading the listings, figuring stuff out and tinkering.

Re: Question about locations of programs in Linux Mint

Nearly all applications are installed in /usr/bin or in /usr/local/bin. Also, you can use which in a terminal to find out where an application is: $ which firefox /usr/bin/firefox Keep this one, it should work in all GNU distributions, not just on Mint. Also... 'I wonder where is foo?' or 'I wonder...

Re: Anyone got any interesting hobbies?

This week I put up 20 pints of pear honey, and I still have nearly 30lbs of pears left to process, eat or give away. Send some. This is one of the best hobbies, to grow your own food. I can't grow anything where I live, I'm strugling to keep my lousy little suculenta alive. I've just stumbled upon ...
