Re: What sends noobs running back to Windows?

quite noticeable screen tearing that I couldn't fix after trying many things that required plenty of time and effort. This is indeed a problem for some; did you try a different desktop environment? e.g. I have tearing (vsync) issues with my Mint 17.3 Cinnamon system - particularly with Waterfox - b...

Re: What sends noobs running back to Windows?

Even though I don't consider myself a noob nor an expert, in my case I went back to windows simply because of quite noticeable screen tearing that I couldn't fix after trying many things that required plenty of time and effort. In the end I simply decided that I wasn't willing to spend so much time ...

Hi everyone, just wondering. Will there be any changes regarding all this with the new 18.3 release?

Re: Thank you to those supporting others here!

Hi everyone. I wanted also to express my gratitud towards the community and to point out the quality of the forum. Not only the people, but how the whole forum is laid out is amazing. How it is all divided in all the different sections and everything, I like it much better than pretty much all the o...

Re: Video performance and Desktop Environments

It should be noted that AMD fglrx drivers provide very limited video acceleration as xvba was borked from teh get go. If you are determined to get this to work, start with the following: sudo apt-get install xvba-va-driver libva-glx1 libva-egl1 vainfo The post the output of sudo vainfo This is the ...

Re: Video performance and Desktop Environments

I think I'll stick with 17.3 for now and try your suggested solution. I'll let you know how it went whenever I'm able to do it.

Once again thank you!

Re: Video performance and Desktop Environments

I'll give that a try next Sunday when I'm on my computer. I didn't know that about fglrx, I thought it was actually one of the best options.

Should that work both for LM17 and LM18 by the way?

Thank you!

Video performance and Desktop Environments

Hi everyone. According to the question I'm about to make I think I'm in the right place :) A little bit a background first: I have a Radeon HD 7790 which is 4 years old already. Not long ago it started to make a squaling noise that seems to keep getting louder and louder as time goes by. I did some ...

Re: Mint 17 and 18 AMDGPU drivers! Look here before doing anything!

Thank you for your reply! I know that I'm thinking too far ahead with this but the thing is that I really like Mint out of all the other distros I've tried and I wouldn't like to be forced to use another one, let alone go back to Windows again, especially now that I got quite used to it. Even though...

Re: Mint 17 and 18 AMDGPU drivers! Look here before doing anything!

Hi everyone. Sorry if this is a newbie or a too-broad question but is it known if this issue will be fixed in Mint 19 without any workarounds?

Re: Mint 18.1 Cinn: How To: AMD Driver install (RX480, R7, R9) + Steam

I managed to follow all the steps and there didn't seem to be any error while doing all that, but when I reboot I get a prompt telling me that Cinnamon crashed and asking me if I want to restart it, which doesn't do anything and "takes me" to Fallback mode. Another thing to mention is that I don't s...

Re: Get AMD drivers on Mint 18 [ONLY FOR R7, R9, OR RX CARDS]

Hello I'm trying to make the AMDgpu pro drivers work on my Linux mint 18.2 Sonya install. Unfortunately, after following the install procedure, the best I can come up with is having the drivers working in console mode (tested with a gpu miner, clinfo reports back correctly 1 platform and inxi -Gx r...

Re: ATI proprietary driver and Linux Mint 18

The driver situation is sorted out, that is why there is a sticky. And its even titled " Look here first". You are absolutely right. It was my bad since I think I confused that sticky you are talking about with a different post on another forum also talking about the same issue. I read everything a...

Re: ATI proprietary driver and Linux Mint 18

Hi, thank you for your reply! While I was on 18.2 I tried quite a few different things that people suggested both here and in other websites without success, including the instalation of AMDGPU-PRO which gave me a black screen at login. Now on 17.3 the screen tearing is gone but as I said before, vi...

Re: ATI proprietary driver and Linux Mint 18

Hi all, I am currently running Linux Mint 17.3 and I am considering to upgrade to Mint 18. I created a bootable USB stick to test it, and everything seems to work fine, except that I don't see the option of changing my video card driver in the Driver Manager any longer. On Mint 17.3, I see the opti...
