Re: [NOT-SOLVED] KBackup

I've now loaded the 64 bit version of Mint and the 64 bit version of FreeFileSync (FFS) and it works but doesn't display the icon on the link, bit that's no great problem. I still had a problem mirroring from Win7 over the LAN to Disk 2 - I think this may be something to do with the source addresses...

Re: [NOT-SOLVED] KBackup

My euphoria was a bit premature :( Using FreeFileSync set to mirror from the Win7 machine over the LAN to Disk 2 worked the first time, but the second time it deleted the previously saved backup! It showed the source as being empty, so it emptied the destination. Running it again with an empty desti...

Re: KBackup

That went well :D I used FreeFileSync to copy my data from the Win7 machine straight to "Disk 2 P1", this got around the problem of the 2nd HDD not appearing on the network. This has turned from a problem into a security feature  Always try to call a bug a feature, saves a lot of work! Thanks ...

Re: KBackup

... ... FYI: Backup all important data, documents, multimedia files, passwords, etc... before re-installing Linux Mint 64-bit. ... All my data is on Disk 2 P 1 which will be physically disconnected before I do a new install. Data is also duplicated between my other two PCs on the network, an HDD co...

Re: KBackup

I started using NCH's "Golden Records Vinyl to CD Converter" under windows and it just about works under Wine, but I've just started using OcenAudio under Linux. NCH are a bit sneaky, they advertise some of their software as free, but it turns into a trial and you get a message saying it's expired. ...

Re: KBackup

I'm well used to FreeFileSync under Windows, used for a few years. I tried Luckybackup (amongst others) but unistalled it, can't remember why though. I noticed FreeFileSync said there was a later version available, does it install automatically (like under Windows) or just download the installation ...

Re: KBackup

Many thanks guys, progress made! :D First attempt at installing FreeFileSync didn't work: roger@Vista ~ $ sudo add-apt-repository ppa:freefilesync/ffs [sudo] password for roger: 'This PPA does not support xenial' Cannot add PPA: ''This PPA does not support xenial''. But this did: For Linux Mint 18.x...

[SOLVED] KBackup

I've been looking for a simple backup tool to backup data files from my primary hard drive to a secondary hard drive (called "Drive 2 P 1"). I need to do a full backup occasionally with incremental backups in between. Looking at the description of KBackup it mentions incremental backups, but I canno...

Format of CONF files

I'm trying to set up sharing on a 2nd disk drive and need to add a line to a conf file. Looking at the file comments are preceded by #, but some lines are preceded by ; - is this another comment or does it represent an active line? The line I'm supposed to add doesn't have any prefix.

TIA

Roger

Re: Permissions

I've tried "chown -R ..." on the top folder but get a whole string of "operation not permitted errors". How can I get over this? I'm the sole user on the machine, so assume I have admin rights. "Admin" means you have the ability to use "sudo", but without the sudo you're just a regular user. So try...

Code: Select all

sudo rm -v -R ~/Golden
Type your password when required; this'll remain entirely invisible, not even dots will show, this is normal. Press Enter.
Thanks, That removed the directory right enough!

Re: Permissions

Thanks for the quick responses, I didn't realise chown could be used in conjunction with sudo. The machine's tied up for the next half hour or so, I'll let you know how I get on.

[SOLVED] Permissions

I've been playing with Mint for a few days, but am frustrated by "Permissions". I have copied a folder (Tape Project) containing files from my Win7 machine over the LAN to a folder (Golden) on my Mint desktop. I have now finished with these files and want to delete them and the containing folder, bu...
