Re: About me not accepting password?

Your password would have worked. Those changes are system changes, and require sudo (administrator) priviledge.

If you trust your wife, (I know, don't let her see this reply  ) use the Users & Groups program (logged in as you) and add her to the sudo group. She will then have Admin priviledge.

Re: Seeking opinions: SSD vs HDD using dual boot

Just a suggestion . . Why not shrink your SSD by about 30 or 40 Gigs and install Mint on the SSD. Save your big drive for your data.

Re: unable to shrink sda2

For installing Cinnamon, I would be more concerned with the video/graphics hardware. As you have probably read already here in the forums that Cinnamon requires 3D capable graphics hardware (higher end the better). Otherwise you will overuse the CPU for rendering Cinnamon 3D graphics.

Re: unable to shrink sda2

You'll need to shrink the drive from within Windows. (once done, leave it as free space, so then you can format it as ext4 from within Gparted or the Mint Live system)

Re: Certain DVDs cannot be mounted/mount as blank

Yes, not all blank dvds are created equal. There is a thin metallic foil strip sandwiched between clear plastic. This is what the laser in dvd writers use to write data to the disk. Certain manufacturers are only interested in making sales/profit, thus that foil can be very cheaply made, and can det...

Re: Linux mitn 19 Max sound

Try this . . Use this Terminal command alsamixer, and when the Mixer opens, take a look at both the Master and the PCM volume sliders.

Note: navigation is by keyboard, take note in the upper right of the window.

Try this:
If you open the File Manager and navigate to one of your Impress presentation files, right-click on it, and choose Properties from the pop-up menu.
Go to the Permissions tab.
How are the permissions set ?
Change them to your username if thay are not set as such.

Have you updated youtube-dl recently ? YT is famous for making small changes so people cannot download from them.

Use this Terminal command: sudo youtube-dl -U

Re: Wine and security?

The games I intend playing are low resource and do not require connection to the internet. This is fine. Might I also suggest you install PlayOnLinux in addition to Wine. It is a graphical front-end for Wine, and I find it makes things much easier to install. With P.O.L. you can even install differ...

Re: LinuxMint on a dual Xeon system

I would like to suggest that you consider using/installing Nvidia graphics hardware (Quadro?). Nvidia provides great linux support. AMD support for linux has recently changed, and you may run into problems with AMD drivers where intensive graphics rendering is needed.

Yes, you are right, audio hardware is not detected. :? Have you tried installing a newer kernel ? Audio modules and drivers are included in the linux kernel. Update Manager > View > Linux Kernels If it doesn't help, it is easy to revert back to your previous kernel. Just hold down the right Shift ke...

Re: Dymo labelprinter 450

Suggestion: I would read up on Glabels to see if they have preset macros (templates?) for that. I know that in Word processors <date> <time> would add the current date and time to letters/documents. https://glabels.org/ By looking at the screenshot on the first page, it may, and I say MAY just be: $...

Re: Firefox Home page?

Check Firefox's Preferences > Home section, and under Windows & Tabs you should be able to choose Firefox Home from the drop down list. (I like it too) :)
If it isn't available, try the Restore Defaults button.
