Re: LM 20 Grub themes

Also lost plymouth boot splash, but never saw any NVidia splash screen. Is that something that can be turned on or off at will and, if so, how? I'm thinking that might be a way to substitute something other than the black screen ... Re: your "ps. I may post step by step later", I for one would love ...

Re: Is it possible to use common downloads for 2 Mint machines for software updates?

For reasons I'm not sure of, I had been led to believe that 'apt-get' had been replaced by simply 'apt' (i.e. where one used to type 'apt-get install xxx' the new form would be 'apt install xxx.') Looking at your post has re-educated me and I now realize that the simplification was only for a few co...

Re: Is it possible to use common downloads for 2 Mint machines for software updates?

As a closely related question, does anyone know of a command line sequence to generate the package download script that Synaptic produces using its 'File > Generate package download script' command. Continually opening and closing Synaptic is the most time-consuming portion of the method I gave in t...

Re: Is it possible to use common downloads for 2 Mint machines for software updates?

Though there are a lot of potential “gotchas,” this should get you started, and will work with any OSs that use deb files for install (e.g. Debian, Ubuntu, Mint, etc.): Understand that all machines need to have the same architecture (e.g. 32 bit, 64 bit or whatever). Let’s assume you have several 64...

Re: How to change the plymouth splash screen displayed during startup?

It's been a bit, but I believe that, after copying the image into the proper location and/or making any plymouth script changes you want, you need to run:

sudo update-initramfs -u

so that the image is copied into the RAM file system used during boot; otherwise the old image is still there.

Re: Difficulty with Timeshift and LVM

Original Poster ... I reformatted one of the LVM partitions as btrfs and made another try. Timeshift indicated that it could find no partitions at all on the drive and said something to the effect that the entire physical disk needed to be btrfs in order to be used (sorry; I didn't copy the exact wo...

Re: Difficulty with Timeshift and LVM

Interesting - thanks for the response. The json has the following initial lines: "backup_device_uuid" : "63e9d815-18d9-40f5-b183-a2e732a24649", "parent_device_uuid" : "xREEH0-cKJw-sJ1K-BYhg-yto8-aTJP-1q4zHD", The parent device has the correct UUID which in a Logical Volume is not Hex, but it matches...

Difficulty with Timeshift and LVM

I just installed Linux Mint 20/Cinnamon as the only OS on an SSD. The machine also has a very large secondary hard drive on which I have several partitions - all ext4, including one specifically allocated to Timeshift (in order that scheduled system backups will be on a separate but still internal/a...

Continuous Mesa Updates

Hi: I'm using Mint 19.3/Cinnamon and several weeks ago installed a new NVidia graphics card. Since that time, I've been getting updates to mesa at least once a day and sometimes more often. Today's second update by the way is for the following: mesa (20.2~git2007051930.1a8327~oibaf~b) bionic; urgenc...

Re: xed randomly stops then dies

Thanks for the info.

I do, in fact, have Noveau drivers installed. I guess the "solution" is simply to remove xed from the systems or change the default for double-clicking on test files. Since I mostly use other more capable editors for actual work, this won't be a great loss.

xed randomly stops then dies

Hi: I've run into this problem on several machines, all running Mint 19.x (various levels 1, 2, & 3). When using xed (Mint/Cinnamon's default text editor), every so often it will just stop responding, and after several seconds just disappear. If I restart it, it might work for a while, but it might ...

Re: How to Launch LVM2 GUI?

Just for the record - I tested the following sequence to install the system-config-lvm utility in Mint 19.x and can confirm that it does function. sudo add-apt-repository ppa:hermlnx/system-config-lvm sudo apt update sudo apt install system-config-lvm It automagically adds a menu item titled "Logica...

Need PCIx WiFi Adapter Recommendation

Hi: I'm currently looking for an internal (PCIx) WiFi adapter that is known to work with current versions of Mint (and hopefully with other Linuxes as well). It doesn't need to support bluetooth, though it's ok if it does. The various on-line sources give conflicting information on which devices "wo...

ibus hotkey in Mint 19.2

I've set up ibus in a new installation of Mint 19.2, and am able to select from the drop down list of installed input methods using a mouse, but I much prefer using the keyboard to switch among the choices. In 19.2 however, neither the default hot key nor any custom hot key set in ibus preferences a...

Re: Will Linux Mint eventually support Arm?

This is an interesting discussion to me for the following reasons: a) The planned (supposedly within this quarter) release of the Librem 5 phone, which uses the i.MX8M/Cortex A53, 64bit ARM. b) The Librem 5 is (again, supposedly) easily able to connect to a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. c) The Libre...

Re: Problem Changing CDs

Thanks for the thought ... All of the methods of ejecting I used (and know of) unmount the CD medium prior to doing the actual ejection. If the app hasn't yet finished reading from the CD, a message pops up saying it's busy; on the other hand a message also pops up confirming that it's ok to remove ...

Problem Changing CDs

Quite some time ago, I used to play audio CDs on my computer while working on other things; when one completed, I would eject it, insert another, and continue playing. I recently attempted to do that again after a number of years and discovered that, once I ejected a CD, I could no longer read anoth...

How interesting!! Thanks very much for the reply.

I guess I never experienced the issue discussed there (my printer is an HP OfficeJet 6700), so wasn't aware that folks had difficulties.
