Re: Sound and DVD burn glitches
Apologies, not looked here for weeks - getting on with life! Just a thought, I have a pc tower I can fit out from scratch. If I was to buy a mobo (used and cheap) what would be ideal for Mint? Where would I go for this info? I have googled and there's not a lot - most say check out each mobo, but gi...

Re: Sound and DVD burn glitches
Here it is! Just for the moment I have 2 pairs of headphones plugged into headphone and line outputs - I am assuming these are both the same impedance, but wanted to be sure there was nothing going on with my amp, although I had checked all was correctly connected. As before, headphone output at the...

Re: Sound and DVD burn glitches
And I've been extra dim witted here - there is no sound card. I had the amp plugged into the jacks at the back, which are on the motherboard. I had a sound card in the past, but not in the present setup. Thanks again!

I am sorry, you need to explain to me what a usb sound card does. There is an audio and mic output/input from the jack, so why is it useful? Thanks.

Re: Sound and DVD burn glitches
Hi Phd21, thanks for the ideas. I have never heard of an external usb sound card adapter. I had been wondering about replacing the sound card. Or oven the motherboard, as mine is knocking 15yrs old and I could probably pick up something with more zest cheaply. The main thing that stops me is the pos...

I just thought to repeat aforesaid command, did so, and the sound on headphones is back. This is great. I restarted and it is still working. I have other things to do now but will keep checking and report back. Fingers crossed.

Re: Sound and DVD burn glitches
There is only 4.10.0 - 0-38 in grub. generic, upstart, recovery. I tried the command line suggested with an odd result. Few seconds I had sound on headphones. Then it went completely dead there. I tried a second pair just in case there was an intermittent broken lead, still dead. Also, and this has a...

Re: Sound and DVD burn glitches
It is actually fairly reassuring to see I am not the only person who does daft things ... So, booted up pressing shift. Grub menu appeared, chose advanced .... several options, found '44-166 generic'. Enter. Boot started, Mint symbol appeared. Hung. Left ten minutes, no change. Had to turn off power...
