Re: browser: alternatives to Firefox 57

Firefox 57 has failed for me. Total lockups requiring power button reset. High CPU on Web Content PID. Strange effects when watching telly, keeps going into screen lock. No screen lock with 56 but that was also high Web Content. A pity, I liked the feel of it and menus. Now trying Chrome, none of th...

Re: mount/unmount USB stick from terminal

I think I get this now. If you plug in a USB and it shows up, it is mounted, and lsblk shows the full path, as does mount. You do not need to mount it.

But you need to unmount <path> before removal.

Re: Firefox puzzles me

Firefox Quantum 57.ob13 beta

CPU much better, hopefully problems solved. Seems a bit slower on downloads, but is still in beta.

Re: Firefox puzzles me

Flemur " 56, the current official version, used CPU like crazy, it was hard to type anything because it'd hang/stick for several seconds while not doing anything except typing." Thanks for your reply. There is a beta of course but I will wait until 14th Nov to see what that brings. I like the syncin...

[SOLVED PROBABLY] Firefox puzzles me

PROBAtimes runs slow, and 'top' shows high CPU on firefox Web Content. Often 50-80%, after it has stopped downloading. But restart it and CPU less than 10%, until you try and load a new page. Again after stopped downloading high CPU Web Content. Many other posts on this say similar, but apparently n...

Re: [SOLVED] Be gentle with me

It has been many years brow beating and hand bagging but last night I finally 'got it' ! A friend asked me to set their new PC, one of those large screen only Dells, quite nice on you tube. But they wanted Office 365 whereas I only had an old copy of Office, I think Libre is now just as pretty as th...

Re: Be gentle with me

My opening post was direct, born out of frustration.

But most members understood what I was getting at, and gave kind replies.

I will stick to the point in future.

Re: Are laptops a problem with Linux and power

Mute Ant

I think you could have something there, the 'exhaust' is rather warm. Perhaps a clean out. Research shows above 70 deg could be a problem,

The laptop, a nice i7 was given to me by my son who is at Uni, say no more !!

Thank you for your reply.

Re: Be gentle with me

"Just this morning, I removed a reply calling you a troll, which I felt was not on." Dear Moem I would like to apologise, it was not admins or mods which can be rude, it is members. I thought I would last longer than two days as a new member before someone was rude, but there you are. And my crime, ...

Re: Are laptops a problem with Linux and power

Thank you chrisuk. I was just about to mail a moderator to delete my account, and that after two days membership ! I am terribly sorry that i thought teminain or whatever it was could have been a genuine mint command, maybe an advanced spin off from terminal. And yes I have spent 30 years with hardw...

Re: Are laptops a problem with Linux and power

Well I well understand what terminal is, I have been using it for 30 years. But the spelling was "terminaln" from a post so I thought it was a special Linux command. I have not got on well with Linux, just trying again after about 5 years, that is why I made my first post category "be gentle with me...

"Copy/paste this into the terminal and copy/paste the text output here:"

Sorry don't understand what you mean here, new to Linux but not IT.

I don't know if I can give much more info, it just shuts off.

Re: Be gentle with me

No Hairyloon, one mod admitted to it.

I think perhaps if you look a little closer you will find the point of my original OP.

A bit like 'Wind in the Willows' read between the lines.

I think we could stop this now, mint is our purpose.

Re: Be gentle with me

"Welcome aboard, Alan! I don't think I've ever witnessed one of the admins being rude, but I (a moderator) may be guilty of that on occasion." Well at least one person admitted to it. Lets be clear, it was a few years ago and was probably due to my irritation of the instability of the distro I tried...

"I understand dipping a toe in the water before jumping in. But I'm not sure why you felt you had to call the mods rude in the process of doing so." Well perhaps rude was a bit strong, perhaps terse and short would have been better. But you had to read between the lines from my original and other po...

Re: Be gentle with me

"interesting reading but you've not really stated which part exactly you were having trouble with, hardware? Software? Both ? Re: Be gentle with me

"If you require someone to be gentle with you, hire a baby sitter. " Good idea, but SWMBO may not like it !! Actually we had triplets, now 25 and never had a baby sitter. My original post was also to see what kind of replies I would get, and whether it was worth continuing. I must say I am encourage...
