Re: mate is better than xfce in resource usage and speed?

This thread is a few years old now, but here's a perspective from 2019. I have an ancient 32-bit laptop with 2GB or RAM (maxed out) and an SSD in place of the original spinning HDD (the SSD made *way* more difference to its performance than doubling the RAM). I would definitely pick Mate over Cinamm...

Re: Why do Firefox and Thunderbird keep randomly opening new windows?

I removed Thunderbird, which stops it from randomly opening pretty effectively ;) See my other topic about the mint metapackage. I recently upgraded to Firefox Quantam (57.0), which was jarring to say the least! The problem hasn't stopped. New Firefox windows still pop up randomly, almost always whe...

Is removing the mint metapackage a bad idea?

I recently uninstalled Thunderbird from my LMDE 2 system (64-bit with Cinammon). When I did, it said it was also uninstalling a mint metapackage. I had done this before, and it didn't seem to cause any problems, so I did it again. Just wondering what this metapackage is, and whether I might have set...

Re: Do you guys use SWAP space on new installs?

Ultimately it depends what hardware you are using, and what you want to do with it. For example, I have an old netbook that came with only 1GB of RAM. I recently replace the old hard drive with a new SSD drive and upgraded the RAM to 2GB. Now, because this PC has so little RAM, there may well be tim...

System not shutting down - 'gnome-keyring-daemon not responding'

I'm running 64-bit LMDE 2.0 (EDIT: with Cinammon) with all updates installed. Every time I choose Menu > Quit > Shut down I get a dialogue box pop up saying "Some programs are still running". It lists "Transmission BitTorrent Client" as having " BitTorrent activity" and "gnome-keyring-daemon" as "no...

Re: Why do Firefox and Thunderbird keep randomly opening new windows?

FYI it just happened again. The only thing I had my fingers on were the touchpad (I was hovering a finger over the left-click button but definitely didn't depress it). I'm using the built-in keyboard on a 64-bit Fujitsu Lifebook laptop, this link has the full specs (scroll down past the first set of...

The Ctrl buttons on this keyboard are in places that are unlikely to be struck by accident, especially in combination with another key (FYI Ctrl+N = new window). It's ...

Why do Firefox and Thunderbird keep randomly opening new windows?

Hi there. I've been running LMDE 2.0 (EDIT: 64-bit with Cinammon) for a couple of months now, and I love it. However, there is one minor bug that is quite annoying. Every now and then, for no obvious reason, a new Firefox window will open, and at the same time, a new Thunderbird window. It always se...
