[Solved] Update failed

Found a new update after booting into Mint 18.2 Cinnamon today. Linux-libc-dev 4.4.0-108.131 Clicked install update on update manager and then gave the password. After a few seconds, I was notified that the update had failed with the following message: W: Failed to fetch security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/p...

Re: Mint on low-end hardware?

I have installed Mint on a Compaq Presario S5160, 32 bit, Single Core, .75Gb RAM. The result is surprising. It runs a lot better than it did with XP although, since the graphics are on-board, it cannot handle on-line games like Bejeweled Blitz - it just hasn't got the oomph needed. That could be rec...

Re: Instaling Linux side by side

I don't know about Windows 10, but as Pierre has said, it might be wise to change out the hard drive first, as then you'll always have Win 10 to go back to if you need to. Otherwise, Mint will overwrite everything on the disc.

Can't honestly see why you'd want to go back to Win 10 though :?

Re: Solve boot problems with AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards

I found a simple way of installing Mint 18.2 after my Nvidia card sent the screen into paroxisms. 1. boot live DVD/USB in compatibility mode 2. Run install from desktop 3. Reboot 4. Upon reboot, hold shift key and select Advanced options from menu (2nd on list in 18.2) 5. Choose recovery mode (first...

Re: I cannot install Linux Mint on my laptop : (

I wish I could help, having just installed Mint Cinnamon on my Asus X70IO laptop. They're a bit of a bugger, I know. However, without more info, it's near impossible to know what's happening.

I wish you the best of luck.

Re: [Fixed]trying to run Mint 18.2 live from USB

It seems that the issue had nothing to do with Mint and everything to do with the graphics card in the machine. I put the live USB in compatibility mode and surprisingly, this time it worked. I was able to install from there in a partition to test the installation and see whether I could get a drive...

Re: trying to run Mint 18.2 live from USB

Actually, I have tried it with Cinnamon 32 and 64 and have just come close to throwing the damned thing out of the window having got the same results with Mate 64, using a different USB flashdrive. I'm wondering actually whether this has anything to do with the fact that the HP G6000 has what I can ...

[Fixed]trying to run Mint 18.2 live from USB

It boots fine initially, showing the LM logo and t...

Re: Unable to install or even run Linux Mint on Asus X70io laptop

SUSSED!!! In the BIOS, there is a HDD manager for booting. It appears as though the Asus looks upon a USB that's connected as a HDD, not exernal. That's the one that needed to be selected as the primary boot drive. It's not exactly what I would call intuitive as I would have called the USB "External...

Re: Unable to install or even run Linux Mint on Asus X70io laptop

@Michael Louwe That's good to know. It will be interesting to see whether installing Windows 7 will make a difference. I had always intended to make this machine dual boot, but was trying to install LM just to get it into English. Installing Windows first is not optional, so getting rid of Vista mig...

Re: Unable to install or even run Linux Mint on Asus X70io laptop

@Dark... Did that. Didn't work. Am installing Windows 7 to at least make the bugger talk to me in English (my French is nowhere near good enough). Will try again after that once I know whether the hardware is all working as it should. I have concerns as to whether the DVD drive is working properly, ...

Re: Unable to install or even run Linux Mint on Asus X70io laptop

I don't know. I checked all the settings I could make any changes to and now I wonder whether the DVD drive isn't up the swanny, which would answer at least one of my questions! You have given me food for thought though. I have just received a Win 7 disc, so will be upgrading to that first - at leas...

Re: Unable to install or even run Linux Mint on Asus X70io laptop

Thanks for the reply, but I'm not getting that far. Mint will not boot at all let alone go into any of the install stages. Windows boots every time. I wish I could give you more information, but all I can see is a little action that suggests that the disc or drive is being accessed and then up pops ...

[SOLVED]Unable to install or even run Linux Mint on Asus X70io laptop

Hi folks, as a veteran Windows developer and software engineer, I must confess to being a complete newbie with Linux. I have however taken the plunge and installed Linux Mint on my old XP box. True, I need to whack in a bit more RAM to stop it running like a snail on Valium, but other than that, I c...
