Re: Linux Mint installed and works flawlessly on Mac Mini!

I have a Logitech LX8 mouse which has worked great, so I can't see yours having a long-term problem if it is a similar model.

and really is just for showing off/eye candy. Now hold on just one sec... I love the compiz cube and use it every day. Each side is a different desktop, so you can run a ton of stuff without cluttering your screen. At home I use four desktops, at work I use 7 sides, and usually have stuff on all of...

Re: LinuxMint7 won't run at all

Have you tried booting without the wifi card? That solved the problem for me, then once I had a working system I used "Windows Wireless Drivers" to install the driver, turned off and plugged the card back in, then turned the computer back on again and had working wifi!

Re: Noob looking for advice re video and wifi

That's all good news to me! I'm ready to pull the trigger, I think. Did you have any problems with your wifi setup? Yes on two of my three Mintified computers. My Acer laptop with Atheros wireless worked great out of the box and found the networks right away. The two desktops, with PCI Wifi cards b...

Re: Unable to use Cano Scan LIDE 25

My experience of the default Scanner Utility is that it's not really good for anything. Using XSANE instead should work, it's much better and I don't know why Mint doesn't ship it as standard when Ubuntu does!

Re: A serious warning for anyone using Windows and AVG free

For me, Avast is the best antivirus for Windows.. I trusted Avast for a couple of years but then it let me down in a big way and i had to reformat. Then again, any other antivirus probably wouldn't have helped in the situation either. Realising that you can still get hit through something as simple...

Re: Noob looking for advice re video and wifi

1. The Guided method to resize your current partition and then install Mint on a new one should do exactly that, just by following the prompts as you say. Although it's advisable to back up your files from XP in case something does go wrong. 2. This would be a bit harder. A Live CD like Parted Magic...

Re: LinuxMint7 won't run at all

Do you perhaps have a PCI network card? I had a problem with similar symptoms, plus flashing LEDs on my keyboard after the lockup. After changing just about everything I could think of, I finally realised that it was my wireless card causing this, and booting without it worked fine. Just a thought.

Re: Wireless Driver BCm4322...

Same problem, except that my wired connection is downstairs and at the other end of the house (I'm on a Dell desktop). Is there a file I can put on a USB drive that is reasonably easy to install? I tried downloading the .deb of fwcutter, but because it then goes on to download more files, it really...

Re: Article: You have no rights, so buy Windows 7

I for one thought that was a rubbish article. I thought it was well known that Windows 7 RCs would start shutting themselves down towards the end of their life, but you're getting it for free anyway so I don't see what the fuss is about. It has nothing to do with "rights", just that if you've instal...

Re: Why does everyone copy Windows and Mac?

I agree with this and I think the numbers are correct. Why would anyone want to switch to an Apple if they got tired of Windows? I agree to the extent that the artwork copy of vista and osX is a little rediculous. Not because I can't understand why someone would want a vista/osx theme, but because ...

Re: More wireless woes with Gloria

These Broadcom cards are a real pain. I just got one when I bought the cheapest card off Ebay, but it's turned out to be even worse than my TNET card (also from Ebay and claiming to be Linux-compatible... lies) which causes kernel panics on boot unless you use ndiswrapper first. Well I tried all sor...

Re: Return to the Dark Side!

My brother has it in a virtual machine so I took a quick look at it... I guess I'm spoiled by how Linux comes with software to do most common things out of the box, but I was shocked at how little you could actually do with Windows 7 without having to download more stuff. No Office, no email client,...

Giver not working?

I just installed Gloria on a new Acer Aspire 5535 laptop. So far all is working except suspend (and I have added to the wiki accordingly) and I am now looking to transfer files from my desktop PC. As I have quite a few videos it would need a lot of ferrying for my 16GB flash drive to complete the jo...

Re: my life of "distros"

For me Mint made Gnome appealing! I had used Fedora Core for a while so I was familiar with Gnome but I never really liked the menu and the two panel layout, it just looked primitive to me. Mint was trying to make Gnome appealing and user friendly. I'd feel exactly the same. When I first started tr...

Re: Linux Mint installed and works flawlessly on Mac Mini!

I had the same problem with PCLOS when I first tried it (it was the first distro I got working, since Ubuntu wouldn't boot, and at the time I didn't know it was my wireless card causing this). I found it too rough-around-the-edges to be able to use it as an everyday system (I particularly disliked t...

Re: VLC in Gloria has two windows?

I tried it, and it looks nice, but crashes the computer in full screen mode. Then again, Xine, VLC and Totem all seem to do that too (and MPlayer/GNOME Mplayer won't even go full-screen properly) so I suspect another fglrx issue...

VLC in Gloria has two windows?

I've always preferred VLC to Totem and Mplayer, and am more used to it from when I used it in Windows, so one of the first things I did when I got Mint 7 working was to install it from the featured apps in MintInstall. However, it's behaving differently to on other distributions. When I load a video...
