intel-microcode (3.20200609.0ubuntu0.18.04.0) BORKS system

I ran update mgr this morning on my normally well-behaved system. Updated intel-microcode, the latest kernel, flash plugin, and libjpeg-turbo, and rebooted as required. No go...hung at black screen. REISUO didn't work. Switched off. Rebooted with older kernel: same problem. Rebooted compatibility mo...

Re: Sadly I give up - back to Windows

But I note that ASUS is not a recommandable trademark to run Linux. You are not the first one complaining about it so I shall avoid it and not recommand this trademark in the future. Works fine for me as well. I even surprised myself by getting openCL working which speeds up my photo editing in dar...

Re: Problem downloading picture from a camera via USB

A workaround maybe to plug the SD card direct into the computer (assuming you have a usb/SD card converter or SD card reader). Be warned that doesn't always work - some cards formatted in the camera don't work with linux :( Does work, no problem, but I prefer if possible to use the USB lead. Especi...

Problem downloading picture from a camera via USB

I have just acquired a new camera (FUji X-H1) and can't download on this laptop via a USB lead. No problem with my old camera (Fuji X-T20 using the same SD card), and I can download from the -H1 onto a different laptop (also Asus) running Mint 18.3. The laptop recognizes the camera (as a camera: USB...

Re: PC confused about Intel 3165 NIC

Apols but I can't thelp with this. However you're not alone, I have exactly the same (non)-issue with my laptop and its Intel wireless 7265. The non-problem appeared yesterday and I'm hoping it will go away sometime all by itself. The only thing that's changed is that I'm on holiday on the opposite ...

Re: WIN32 APLHA, IA64 etc

Hi, Do you use BOINC or something similar (shared computing)? No - or not knowingly. Bog standard Mint installation plus Darktable, Redshift, TLP, Pix, Geeqie, Keepassx. Just thought: it might be down to Mendeley desktop ??? but if so, I'm sure these folders have only recently appeared and Mendeley...

WIN32 APLHA, IA64 etc

I have a number of folders in my HOME folder: IA64, WIN32ALPHA, WIN32MIPS, WIN32PPC, WIN32X86, WIN40, X64 as well JON. They're all empty and everything appears to be working as it should. I deleted them (using root), shut down, and booted...they came back. I'm curious as to what is creating them? Th...

Mint sometimes won't shut down

MInt 19.2 but same problem on 19.1 and 18.3. If I've been using my laptop for a couple of days it won't shut down from the menu, instead it does a restart. To shut it down I have to use REISUO (I think shut down via terminal also works IIRC). If I turn it on again and tell it to shut down within a f...

Re: What to do when Linux 'freezes' ?

Press and hold down alt-prt scrn together.

While holding down these two keys slowly type r e i s u b in succession (ie one at a time maybe one second apart).

Should close everything and reboot.

[Solved - sort of] kernel 4.15.0-48 won't shutdown (CInnamon 19.1)

As it says in the title. Since updating to the -48 kernel my laptop won't shutdown. If I go to the menu and try shutdown from there it starts to shutdown (very briefly) then almost immediately takes me to the login screen - the one you get when you initially boot up from complete shutdown. Top right...

[Solved] Auto control of redshift & screen brightness

Hi all. I use redshift while web browsing in the evenings, and also turn the screen brightness down to 50%. I also use the excellent Darktable for developing photographs. The problem is that I often forget to turn off redshift and/or max the screen brightness before a DT session, which then results ...

I should add, it doesn't crash when I open the on-screen keyboard, only when you try to type something...anything. Alt-F2 R restores function (without the on screen keyboard)

on-screen keyboard crashes

Asus zenbook flip (2 in 1 laptop), mint 18.3. Works beautifully, in laptop mode using the hardware keyboard. Recently the on-screen keyboard started to cause Cinnamon to crash, whether it's in laptop mode or tablet mode. Looking for reasons why (presumably an update but I don't know how to find out ...

[SOLVED, sort of] Acer Aspire one installation fail (XFCE)

A friend has had to go into hospital so I thought to loan her an old and redundant Acer netbook. A while back and in an idle moment I installed 17.3 cinnamon on it, which ran, slowly (not surprising really), but it ran, better than the original Windows 7 starter version. Yesterday I tried to replace...

Re: asus laptop

I've installed mint 17.x and (later) 18.3 on both an Asus K52F (core i3) and also on a UX360UA (Zenbook flip, i5 skylake). No problems installing or getting them to work. The Zenbook has a hi res touch screen and is a 2-in-1, and runs like clockwork (fast clockwork), including the touch screen, scre...

What software would you like to be available for Linux? Not only alternatives to Windows soft, but also specially for Linux? Lightweight Amazon Kindle app. Which can read the stuff I bought off Amazon. Sorry if someone's mentioned this before...or if it is available. The cloud reader works but is a...
