Re: Mint only boots into terminal, no GUI

My Mint 19.2 PC crashed due to a power outage. (I actually have a UPS, and it was beeping, but I was stubborn and didn't shut down soon enough.) When power was restored, Mint booted to a full-screen terminal, no video. I thought it was a video driver issue, but couldn't reinstall Nvidia from the ter...

Re: Speaker popping/crackling noise on suspend/reboot

Thank you for this excellent post... I was getting a single speaker pop after any period of silence and sound returned. It seemed like something was starting up. This fix worked on linux 19.2, with the latest kernel. Glad to see some fixes don't become outdated. Some specs: Kernel: 5.0.0-25-generic ...

Re: Fan issue with new build

It's been months now, but I wanted to add more info in case anyone does ever read this... Basically, I found that changing BIOS settings (not sure which ones) actually appear to be the cause of the fan problem described above. If the BIOS is reset to defaults, the problem is not there and my PC is s...

Re: Samba will not run in Linux Mint 18.3

Note too a simple point: If Gufw Firewall is on and set to deny incoming, all file-sharing won't work. You could add exception entries, or just disable it when occasional sharing is needed.

Copy and Paste MT4

MT4 is used on my Linux Mint machine I just built in 11/17. I could not get MT4 (or MT5) to install the advised way using Wine. The install failed because now it wants you to login or create an account, but this could not connect. It seems to me that this is one program which designers have delibera...

Re: New to Linux as a whole... I have a lot of problems.

Have you looked at BIOS settings? Are there any worth fiddling with? Often there will be a setting to determine whether the graphics chip does all the graphics processing alone or whether the CPU contributes to graphics processing in shared RAM- but this applies more to desktops. Or if the BIOS isn'...

Re: Start up issues

I'd go through the BIOS again with the Motherboard manual. But then many motherboard manuals are incomplete or offer poor explanations of BIOS features. Are you using a UEFI or legacy boot? On my Gigabyte MB, there is a setting for CSM Support - "Enables or disables UEFI Compatibility Support Module...

More Re: 18.3 - Unable to decrypt at boot

I reinstalled LM 18.2 cinnamon a few days ago, looking resolve some problems that were self-inflicted. This time around I selected the installation option to encrypt the drive, which probably wasn't that necessary, but one of the reasons I decided to try Linux is that it is more secure. Anyhow, now ...

Re: 18.3 - Unable to decrypt at boot

I have the exact same problem after installing with encryption, but doubt it is a hardware issue...
In my case:
If you press ctrl+alt+del, system will reboot to the Grub selection menu. If you choose the Kernel in recovery mode, you get to enter the PW and it works fine.

Solved

Thank you again for your support. I wasn't aware that the kernel upgrade was chosen as a separate item from a list in the upgrade manager. The upgrade to 4.13 fixed several issues for me, but it actually didn't fix the fan after sleep issue- a BIOS upgrade to F5 did. But I am relieved, liking Linux ...

Re: Fan issue with new build

Thx for the reponse... the Gigabyte BIOS has a "Smartfan" Utility where you graphically (on a chart) set fan levels for CPU temperatures. It's a lot of information to list here. I have tried loading BIOS defaults to make sure none of my changes caused the high fan speed coming out of sleep mode. No ...

Fan issue with new build

I built a new desktop with new hardware and decided to try running Linux Mint on it alone - no dual boot! Hardware: Intel Core i5 8400 (gen 8), Gigabyte Z370 HD3 Mobo, Samsung 960 EVO M.2 NVMe SSD, Geforce GTX 1060, 16 GB PC 3000 Now the problem is, when I bring my computer out of sleep mode (suspen...
