Fixes for games I've found with Steam in Linux 21.1:
If it's newer, force the experimental version of Proton and vice-versa.
GPU setting: Disable multi-core processing.

Re: Kernel panic on each kernel upgrade with hybrid GPU system
Thanks I actually found that advice for having the GRUB menu show on this page: https://www.imaginelinux.com/change-root-password-linux-mint/ - really good link. Nouveau work for you then? Do you play Steam games with it? That's a side purpose in my having Linux Mint. I know some consider that crazy...

Re: Kernel panic on each kernel upgrade with hybrid GPU system
Hello. I chose to put in a new NVME drive in my desktop PC (of hardware from 2018) and update to 21.1 from 19.3, and have encountered this same problem of Kernel panic. The install worked at first, but after installing the Nvidia driver through the driver manager, Linux Mint no longer booted, and th...

Re: Gamepads and Steam Proton
p.s. in the past I tried one of those cheap knock-off Gamecube controllers (connected to a Wii) and it was total junk Thx for your response - I suspect that's right, these controllers are junk... just surprising. Problem with trying to config through a game or app is that at least one or two button...

Gamepads and Steam Proton
My 19.3 LM PC has Steam to make it my gaming machine. I've always been a keyboard + mouse user, but have recently tried gaming pads, 3 of them... and none of them work correctly. I got one USB pad each intended for XBox360, PS2, PS4. And if there's a single thing not right with a gamepad, it's reall...

Re: Packages required for PlayStation4 Clone <Solved>
Looked promising, but package ds4drv could not be located. I'm trying the program Qjoypad installed with the synaptic package manager. I will be interested to see if a wired Snakebyte Game:Pad 4 S (for PS4) can work. I figured there was hope when plugging it in didn't crash LM.

VPN autoreconnect after sleep mode
I was surprised find few search results for this topic on the web and this site. I subscribe to Surfshark VPN (not free) which works well, but when my LM desktop comes out of sleep mode, the connection does not work. (The LAN is connected, but the WAN is stuck.) My guess is that the same issue occur...

Much thanks for this post... I was lost on the right syntax (and user) to use in sudoers. A good bit of learning needed, and I want shortcuts.

Re: nvidia broken after today Kernel update from 5.0.x to 5.3.x!
I've had this problem before with Linux 19.x, and had it again today after updating to 5.3.0-26. Points: 1. For me, I found an easy interim solution: At boot, select advanced boot options. Then just select the kernel to boot into (instead of choosing recovery mode) and press ENTER. It starts correct...

Re: Full screen games revealing desktop pixels along bottom and right edges of screen in Cinnamon on Mint 19.2
My LM 19.3 machine has the same Nvidia 1060 card as someone also mentioned above. Bottom and right border was occurring on most of the Steam games I'd bought until the Effects setting fix in this forum. (Irony is that games using Proton didn't have the issue from start.) Much gratitude!

Re: Mint only boots into terminal, no GUI
My Mint 19.2 PC crashed due to a power outage. (I actually have a UPS, and it was beeping, but I was stubborn and didn't shut down soon enough.) When power was restored, Mint booted to a full-screen terminal, no video. I thought it was a video driver issue, but couldn't reinstall Nvidia from the ter...

Re: Speaker popping/crackling noise on suspend/reboot
Thank you for this excellent post... I was getting a single speaker pop after any period of silence and sound returned. It seemed like something was starting up. This fix worked on linux 19.2, with the latest kernel. Glad to see some fixes don't become outdated. Some specs: Kernel: 5.0.0-25-generic ...

Re: Fan issue with new build
It's been months now, but I wanted to add more info in case anyone does ever read this... Basically, I found that changing BIOS settings (not sure which ones) actually appear to be the cause of the fan problem described above. If the BIOS is reset to defaults, the problem is not there and my PC is s...

Note too a simple point: If Gufw Firewall is on and set to deny incoming, all file-sharing won't work. You could add exception entries, or just disable it when occasional sharing is needed.

Copy and Paste MT4
MT4 is used on my Linux Mint machine I just built in 11/17. I could not get MT4 (or MT5) to install the advised way using Wine. The install failed because now it wants you to login or create an account, but this could not connect. It seems to me that this is one program which designers have delibera...

Re: New to Linux as a whole... I have a lot of problems.
Have you looked at BIOS settings? Are there any worth fiddling with? Often there will be a setting to determine whether the graphics chip does all the graphics processing alone or whether the CPU contributes to graphics processing in shared RAM- but this applies more to desktops. Or if the BIOS isn'...

Re: Start up issues
I'd go through the BIOS again with the Motherboard manual. But then many motherboard manuals are incomplete or offer poor explanations of BIOS features. Are you using a UEFI or legacy boot? On my Gigabyte MB, there is a setting for CSM Support - "Enables or disables UEFI Compatibility Support M...

I reinstalled LM 18.2 cinnamon a few days ago, looking resolve some problems that were self-inflicted. This time around I selected the installation option to encrypt the drive, which probably wasn't that necessary, but one of the reasons I decided to try Linux is that it is more secure. Anyhow, now ...

I have the exact same problem after installing with encryption, but doubt it is a hardware issue...
In my case:
If you press ctrl+alt+del, system will reboot to the Grub selection menu. If you choose the Kernel in recovery mode, you get to enter the PW and it works fine.
