Re: Make the root password be automatically set when you set your admin password... again

To the guys who support this design decision. Can I ask you a question? --- ignorant rant removed --- Answering ignorant rants is so boring. You're exaggerating about a small issue. Physical access is needed, plus some Linux knowledge. That drastically limits the practical risk. To protec...

Why did my thread get deleted?

I just posted a perfectly innocent (?) thread requesting a feature in the features and ideas forum and it got deleted shortly afterwards with no explanation. Which rule did I break or is this an arbitrary decision made out of contempt for a particular poster? Thanks - I guess ... (beginning to regre...

Re: Make the root password be automatically set when you set your admin password... again

To the guys who support this design decision. Can I ask you a question? When you leave your house or car unattended, you lock the doors and windows right? Because although you know you cannot keep out a committed thief, you want to discourage opportunists and keep your belongings as secure as possib...

Window stacking

Hey guys. Is there an option somewhere in Cinnamon to enable window stacking? So for each instance of an application that I have running (such as multiple instances of 'Files' or VirtualBox VMs), instead of creating a new section on the taskbar they will 'stack'. If you need me to clarify I'll post ...

Re: Can't change to static IP

Ok, what is the name of your Ethernet connection in ifconfig - is it something like enp0s25? I think you need to use enp0s25 instead of eth0?

I believe it should be greyed out because you've configured networking manually. Did you do systemctl restart network to apply the changes?

You can also 'delegate' certain commands to the wheel group and then put the user in that group.

Re: can't get out sleeping mode and over-heating

I had similar issues around display problems when resuming and resource over-utilization, and found it next to impossible to troubleshoot or find the cause. However, it did go away after installing some updates to kernel, display etc. So I agree with what was said above and upgrade to the latest ver...

Whatever LibreOffice faults may be, at least it doesn't have the appalling ribbon.

The most difficult thing for me is going back to the old menu system after using the ribbon for years. Can't find anything!

Re: Linux is Not Windows

It makes me laugh when I hear the kneejerk anti-Windows reactions from people who don't even use Windows or understand how it works. Are you really, seriously suggesting that Linux hasn't had any major security flaws over the last couple of years? If so ... go ahead and I will laugh heartily and po...

Re: Linux is Not Windows

The article perpetuates the myth that Linux is secure by default and Windows isn't.

This might be true from the days of Windows 98 but it's just simply not true nowadays.

Re: Very serious Lenovo (firmware?) bug...

All the signs point to a near future where consumers will have very little choice any more. We will all have to use whatever the big corporations tell us to use, otherwise things won't work. And of course, with the death of net neutrality the corporations can control the Internet now too. None of th...

Sure. They could install another OS on it and use the thing. There isn't a perfect way to avoid that, except for not letting it get stolen! Are you saying that a disk encrypted in Linux can be swapped into another computer and used without decrypting it first? No - it'll still be encrypted. ...

https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=90&t=110111 I was reading that. Is the password you use for you Admin user account still the same password that is set for the root account? Or do they just leave it completely open? Your system is wide open by default. Anyone can log in as root without ...

No, that's how it should be. The point of VirtualBox is to get VMs running not to look a certain way.

Dropbox, lol. Including important system images. Any really confidential or personal files I have up there are encrypted before they get uploaded.
