Re: Frequent freeze of Cinnamon
Perhaps try a different desktop temporarily - log out of Cinnamon session, choose LXDE or MATE desktop session (install desktop if necessary ex- sudo apt-get install LXDE) and see if freeze re-occurs with the lighter desktop. If OK with lighter desktop, the problem might be with Cinnamon desktop and...

[SOLVED] Download from Mirror Torrent - Open or Save?
Mint V17.1 - New to torrent downloading - when attempting to download a torrent file from a mirror I get the prompt with a choice whether to Open with Transmission or Save. What is the difference between the two choices? When trying the 'Save' option a completed file appears in my download folder bu...

Re: A Useful Bash Script for Beginner?
Here's one I use all the time because I don't really use menus to start anything - it lists all the executables in your PATH which contain some string (see below). I call it "W" (capital) after "which". #!/bin/bash # if [ $# -lt 1 ] then echo Usage: `basename $0` pattern exit 1 ...

[SOLVED] A Useful Bash Script for Beginner?
I'm trying to learn how to use and understand bash scripts. While learning how to echo "Hello World" is the usual place to start, it's not useful and doesn't leave me with much understanding or spark further exploration, nor is it ever necessary to execute it. Wondering if someone could fu...

Re: [SOLVED]Simple System Backup - Timeshift?
[quote="Termy"]For me, Clonezilla is the only true solution for restoring from a backup. Aside from that, I use this little tool I wrote a while ago: https://github.com/terminalforlife/miscellaneous/blob/master/backmeup I'm not a programmer, but think I know enough to run a bash script and...

Re: Simple System Backup - Timeshift?
I installed timeshift even though my records, pictures, and music is backed up on an external hd because it seems easier to restore from a week ago than to install a new system. Too many updates to reinstall.....r Good point - I've been happy with the stability of Mint 17.1 but I always update and ...

[SOLVED]Simple System Backup - Timeshift?
I'm looking for a means of backing up my system. Timeshift seems like a popular application for this purpose, but it is not included in software manager. (Mint V17.1 - Cinnamon). I'm sure I could find a ppa for it, but thought I'd ask here if there are other applications or solutions that Mint users...

Re: [SOLVED ] Best Laptops for Linux Conversion?
Hi bensatlantic, You may want to post what you decided so it will be of help to others. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays :) Actually, despite the excellent suggestions, I'm still pleased enough with my Dell N5110 i5 (Mint V17.1) that I'm considering picking up another. It has a quiet fan and a ni...

Re: Annoying feature with the browser
Firefox used to ask if I wanted to start new session or carry on in the old one for example but I just want to use Opera because it is so much quicker. I've used Opera (w/ Linux Mint V17.1) for over a year and it is very fast and smooth. I also like its bookmark system much better than Firefox. Ope...

[SOLVED] Linux Mint V17.1 to New Version?
I've been using Mint 17.1 for over a year and it works perfectly - for this reason I've never upgraded to a newer version. Opinions from users here would be helpful, but rather than take that time from you all - is there a good place to find such information so that I can research this myself? For e...

Re: [SOLVED] How does Desktop environment affect performance?
I've since discovered Gnome System Monitor which gives real-time information on CPU, RAM and processes. And I've installed LXDE as my desktop to replace Cinnamon and noticed a big difference in the Toshiba Satellite - with Cinnamon, the fan was always running at high speed, even though the CPU didn'...

[SOLVED] How does Desktop environment affect performance?
Both CPU and RAM, actually. I compared RAM usage in XFCE, MATE, and Cinnamon a while back when I installed on a laptop for a friend of mine: Cinnamon used 730 MB of RAM with no applications running, and 1.1 GB of RAM with Firefox running. MATE used 514 MB of RAM with no applications running, and 89...

[SOLVED] How does Desktop environment affect performance?
I'm running Linux Mint 17.1 with Cinnamon on two machines and it works flawlessly on both of them. But one (Toshiba Satellite) has a slower processor and less RAM and begins to struggle with videos and multiple open browser tabs, etc. I'm trying to improve performance in whatever way I can. I know t...

Re: An Example Of Why Linux Has Not Won and Never Will Win The Desktop
It's possible for the normal x-86 Linux to win the desktop and laptop if Google acquires Canonical-Ubuntu or Clem-Linux Mint, for example. *shudder* -- I think I'd have to move to FreeBSD--or at least a Linux not derived from, or in any way dependent upon, Ubuntu. I've used Linux for 5 years now an...
