Re: "Please switch to another Linux Mint mirror. Your APT cache is corrupted"

You don't need to chown to user, these files should stay root-owned, but you must chmod to 644 so non-root users can read them. Yes, I know that now. For others who stumble into this thread (and don't want to roam through the muck) the commands are: 1) verify the permissions are the problem (should...

Re: "Please switch to another Linux Mint mirror. Your APT cache is corrupted"

I did not mark this solved because as far as I am concerned, this issue is NOT SOLVED ! Sorry, I've removed the [SOLVED] marker. I was tripped up by your message where you said "I FOUND IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Yes, I did figure out how to temporarily solve it, but it keeps happening... and it just happe...

Re: ATTN!...Intel CPU owners (Spectre & Meltdown flaws)

The OS, screen size, window size, cpu cores available, browser version, I know can be obtained by servers (and gobbled up by trackers - like google). What about the cpu model? As a matter of design, no: JavaScript and certainly browsers' implementation thereof is severely limited as to what it can ...

Re: ATTN!...Intel CPU owners (Spectre & Meltdown flaws)

i can tell you that it is not LM exposing the "red flagged" CPUs that wont be receiving any more updates for this flaw but rather, it is Intel telling the world that Intel is not going to support them any longer...DAMIEN Hi Damien, actually I meant dynamically exposing the cpu model in the browser,...

Re: "Please switch to another Linux Mint mirror. Your APT cache is corrupted"

Could you edit your original post and place the SOLVED in the Subject: line. That way when members are browsing, they see that the issue has been solved. Thanks. @JerryF I did not mark this solved because as far as I am concerned, this issue is NOT SOLVED ! This BUG has popped up five (six?) differ...

Re: "Please switch to another Linux Mint mirror. Your APT cache is corrupted"

SOLVED The solution with issuing the command sudo gksudo mintupdate is temporary. I got a permanent solution by assuring that the folder and its contents /etc/apt have sufficient privileges. I think the folders need read and execute privileges and the files read privileges for the group root and fo...

Re: ATTN!...Intel CPU owners (Spectre & Meltdown flaws)

Good info DAMIEN1307. The direct link from the articles to the updated list from Intel (PDF): https://newsroom.intel.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/11/2018/04/microcode-update-guidance.pdf Those marked in red won't get patches. I hate to help resurrect this thread (the subject is long in the tooth an...

Re: Firefox problem after updating

i have the same issue when i update to Firefox 60. All i get is a blank screen when i open firefox. i reverted back to version 59 because i had timeshift. Re: Linux Mint 19 codenamed “Tara”

The iso testing for Tara has started: https://community.linuxmint.com/iso The bèta is coming! That's great! I find it surprising that they release all three betas (Cinnamon, MATE, xfce) simultaneously - I expected them to trickle out one at a time. It is also surprising to me that with pr...

Re: Intermittent File Corruption Copying To NTFS

Are things any better with Linux Mint 18.3? Can I trust with NTFS partition where both Windows and Linux write to (Not at the same time though)? I assume you mean better than Windows... I dumped Windows 7 a year ago and am much happier with Mint. The learning curve is steep, but it is worth it. Adv...

Re: Firefox 60.0 and Firejail

... But, is it all that much needed? I have used Firefox for 30 years, and not had any problems. 30 years is a little bit too much in this case. Two things: 1) well I have been using firefox for 40 years. It was installed on my manual typewriter. 2) I found the firefox install version 59, I will us...

Re: Firefox 60.0 and Firejail

Thanks for the link to github. The solution given there is to change seccomp in firefox.profile (in /etc/firejail or ~/.config/firejail whichever you keep your profile files in) to the following: seccomp.drop @clock,@cpu-emulation,@debug,@module,@obsolete,@raw-io,@reboot,@resources,@swap,acct,add_k...

same here. And the worst part is I spent hours last weekend configuring firejail to work with FF 59 and it worked great! Now I am trying to roll back to firefox 59.0, and I cannot figure out how. Never again will I install a new version of firefox via the package manager until I first download it vi...

Re: sugestion for a good email aplication

I use thunderbird and I had a few problems too - so I installed an add-on called Mailbox Alert https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/mailbox-alert/ The advantage is you can specify that a ping or beep or whatever only occurs an email hits certain folders (and ignore non-important emails...

Re: soft link security

The real file attributes are those of the file the symbolic link points to. As explained from the other poster, the permissions of the link aren't the real permissions; they're instead that of the file to which the link points. No need to worry. Yes, and what about this scenario: There is a file th...

Re: Linux Mint 19 codenamed “Tara”

Just to put an end to the endless rumors, speculation, and hand wringing, 32 bit versions of LM19 Tara will be released: https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=3555 It's great that 32-bit support continues, I plan on installing Mint on an older desktop computer with Windows XP and donating it (it runs very ...
