Re: Hacked??

Java is still there -- chewing moderate amounts of cpu and memory. It's typically the 2nd or 3rd item after web content. I don't have a java entry in the plugins area of firefox. How do I kill java? You could run System Monitor - Processes, then right click java and check the properties. I know Uni...

Re: Hacked??

Powered up the machine this morning on a decent bandwidth Ethernet DSL connection. The machine is monitored by gkrellm. I watched as the internet interface went wild with traffic. It got as high as 100kB. I shut off the update script. The traffic continued. I turned off the interface and traffic st...

Re: Hacked??

I de-installed java with synaptic. CPU and traffic are looking normal. Last experiment. Running only xterm. Launch firefox, it goes to homepage. I type ss -prtu while firefox idles on home page: tcp ESTAB 0 0 192.168.1.145:34696 ec2-34-232-245-151.compute-1.amazonaws.com:https users:(("firefox",pid=...

Re: Hacked??

Hi, benc. TOP shows java (running under my account) intermittently gobbling up lots of CPU. I was showing intermittent traffic on the ethernet interface in pretty good amounts before I launched Firefox. To the best of my knowledge there is no Java application which will be started up automatically ...

Re: Hacked??

Sucuri is related to this forum, for sure. That's the firewall we're using. Amazonaws is not Amazon the bookseller... it's a cloud hosting provider. And the browser going to your homepage when you start it is completely expected behaviour, if that's how you've set it up. That doesn't give any indic...

Re: Hacked??

Mint forum  Does not appear to be related to the forum. When I bring up the browser, it goes to my home page -- a search engine. Opening an xterm and typing ss -prtu still shows multiple connections to amazonaws. Here's an oddity. All the bookmarks for both versions of Firefox have just disap...

Re: Hacked??

Interface? I have no idea what you're talking about but I'll eat my hat if there were hackers involved. Can you at least tell us what OS and exact version you're running? That would be a good start. Ethernet interface. Mint/Mate 18.2. Just got in and fired up the box. TOP shows java (running under ...

Re: VPN problem

I kept researching this trying to make some sense of it. I was on a forum and one post talked about the sequence of adding firewall rules for the VPN to shutdown on disconnect. The poster talked about modifying the firewall before or after engaging the VPN. All of my failures had occurred when I was...

Re: can't change DNS servers

gksudo xed /etc/resolvconf/resolv.conf.d/head in the file that open add your dns and save and close the file, then run sudo resolvconf -u Thanks very much. I'll try this next time I change the servers. After reading more, I found that I was locking the resolv.conf file with chattr and that was caus...

can't change DNS servers

One quick OT question please -- there did not seem to be a "new topic" button at the base-level networking forum. Did I miss it somehow? Back to the purpose of the visit -- I picked up a commercial VPN and changed my DNS servers to a host recommended by the VPN. The suggested DNS service was pretty ...

Re: Epson ET-7700 workable under Mint?

Shame that Epson is not more Linux friendly.... Actually I think they are. A fair number of Linux users have Epson printers. One place on their website said the Linux driver was good for all Epson inkjet printers. But they don't exactly advertise that. Ah.....Ok. I had Epson dot matrix printers 10-...

Re: VPN problem

Hi benc and welcome to the forum. I'm not even a novice at reading iptables but I can think of a couple of points. First, iptables needs elevated privileges to edit, so try running your script as root. Second, to see if the script worked (actually added the rules) run in a terminal sudo iptables -S...

VPN problem

I got a VPN from a commercial company. They didn't have a Linux client so I used their OpenVPN settings. I also got code from the VPN to lockup the data transfer if the VPN drops (I have a script for this code to run on top of the GUFW firewall). Twice now, while using a VPN session, I dropped out o...
