Re: Do you care if your Browser leaves "chicken tracks" on the web?
Anyone is free to use any privacy, security and encryption means. But why so often it is not enough and there is a need in some form of self-justification and propaganda? I disagree. Depending on location. some people around the world risk their freedom and even their lives by using privacy, securi...

blocking social media and some spying
Got to the point where I just wanted to tune-out social media. All of it. And other entities involved in tracking and data acquisition. After coming across some info on the web, I modified my "/etc/hosts" file. I added the following: #scratch the bad guys with no DNS lookup delay 0.0.0.0 w...

Re: Do you care if your Browser leaves "chicken tracks" on the web?
You can't hide from fingerprinting because exact algorithms and methods used by companies / organizations are not known. And sometimes fingerprinting may be a good thing helping banks to identify fraudulent access analyzing unrecognized patterns. This is why I gave it all up. Everything that I inco...

Re: blank cd's and dvd's unrecognized?
Out of curiosity, I put a movie in the drives. The drive read light would come on briefly and then ..... nothing. Running the inventory command you listed does not show either of the DVD drives in any category. Interestingly, on the top-left desktop, there's an icon labeled "computer". Cli...

blank cd's and dvd's unrecognized?
New install of 19.2 Mate. I bought some dvd+r disks to make some data disks. I insert the disk in either drive, but I don't get any message like an auto-mount message asking me what to do. I start up Brasero and it's not acknowledging an blank disk either. I tried some older writable 700 MB CD's, an...

Re: New DNS entries revert to original values
Try: Internet icon (nm-applet) -> rt-click -> Edit connections -> pick one -> IPv4 Settings -> -> Method = Automatic addresses only, and -> DNS servers: enter your value(s) This did it. Thanks! If anyone is sorting out VPN leaks, you might want to take a look here: https://ipleak.net/

Re: New DNS entries revert to original values
How'd you change them? I've found that editing a text file as advised on zillions of websites does what you describe: it doesn't stay. I went to control center --> administration --> network I unlocked the "applet", erased the entries and put in my own Try: Internet icon (nm-applet) -> rt...

New DNS entries revert to original values [solved]
Running fresh install of 19.2 Mate. In the control panel, I changed the DNS entries to privacy servers and it stopped my DNS leaks over VPN for that session. When I go to start the machine the next day, my privacy servers are gone and the original DNS values are in place. Any idea what I'm doing wro...

Re: Hacked??
Java is still there -- chewing moderate amounts of cpu and memory. It's typically the 2nd or 3rd item after web content. I don't have a java entry in the plugins area of firefox. How do I kill java? You could run System Monitor - Processes, then right click java and check the properties. I know Uni...

Re: Hacked??
Powered up the machine this morning on a decent bandwidth Ethernet DSL connection. The machine is monitored by gkrellm. I watched as the internet interface went wild with traffic. It got as high as 100kB. I shut off the update script. The traffic continued. I turned off the interface and traffic st...

I de-installed java with synaptic. CPU and traffic are looking normal. Last experiment. Running only xterm. Launch firefox, it goes to homepage. I type ss -prtu while firefox idles on home page: tcp ESTAB 0 0 192.168.1.145:34696 ec2-34-232-245-151.compute-1.amazonaws.com:https users:(("firefox&...

Re: Hacked??
Hi, benc. TOP shows java (running under my account) intermittently gobbling up lots of CPU. I was showing intermittent traffic on the ethernet interface in pretty good amounts before I launched Firefox. To the best of my knowledge there is no Java application which will be started up automatically ...

Sucuri is related to this forum, for sure. That's the firewall we're using. Amazonaws is not Amazon the bookseller... it's a cloud hosting provider. And the browser going to your homepage when you start it is completely expected behaviour, if that's how you've set it up. That doesn't give any indic...

Re: Hacked??
Mint forum  Does not appear to be related to the forum. When I bring up the browser, it goes to my home page -- a search engine. Opening an xterm and typing ss -prtu still shows multiple connections to amazonaws. Here's an oddity. All the bookmarks for both versions of Firefox have just disap...

Interface? I have no idea what you're talking about but I'll eat my hat if there were hackers involved. Can you at least tell us what OS and exact version you're running? That would be a good start. Ethernet interface. Mint/Mate 18.2. Just got in and fired up the box. TOP shows java (running under ...

Re: VPN problem
I kept researching this trying to make some sense of it. I was on a forum and one post talked about the sequence of adding firewall rules for the VPN to shutdown on disconnect. The poster talked about modifying the firewall before or after engaging the VPN. All of my failures had occurred when I was...
