Re: How to see colored markings with Dark Theme?
Clem pointed out to me that Xed is themed separately from the GTK theme using a GTKSourceView theme. I was able to bring up XedPreferences and select Theme. There are two existing themes in there (Kate & Solarized Light) that work fine with the dark theme. You can import other themes from: https...

[SOLVED] How to see colored markings with Dark Theme?
When I upgraded to LM 20.1 Cinnamon, I decided to try to use the dark theme. One problem I have is being able to see colored markings like the auto spell check red underline in the editor. I can read the text but I don't see the red line makings. They are hidden by the dark theme. How do other peopl...

Re: How can standard user connect to hidden WiFi in LM 20.1
That fixed it. Thank you!
Now when a standard user turns on WiFi it auto-connects to the hidden network without having to do anything else.

[SOLVED] How can standard user connect to hidden WiFi in LM 20.1
This is only a problem in Linux Mint 20.1. It will auto-connect to the hidden WiFi network in LM 19.3 and 18.3 but not so in LM 20.1. This is all on the same laptop and all with the Cinnamon desktop. The hidden network is setup under "Network Connections" as: x Connect Automatically with p...

Re: Recent grub update
I've seen that on my Mint 18.3 and 19, 19.1 systems. It makes me nervous too, so I always take a snapshot with timeshift first. I've never had a problem, though. I also have Win7 and some other Linux distros on those machines and it still finds those as well.

Re: fdisk -l fails to show partition table, while lsblk succeeds
It's been a long time since I've used fdisk. Does fdisk handle efi partitions now? It used to only handle MBR partitions. I'm wondering if you got an old invalid MBR entry that fdisk is seeing while the other tools are seeing the correct efi entries.

Re: Testing on another partition and boot fix
Greetings UrDrWho; It's not an EFI thing. The same thing would happen in BIOS mode. The problem is that everytime you install a new linux distro to another partition on you HDD you install a new boot managager (most likely GRUB2). You override the existing one with a copy from the new distro. There ...

Re: Clean up grub
Boot into your original Linux Mint. Bring up a terminal and reinstal grub from the there by typing: sudo grub-install sudo update-grub Now reboot to make sure this Linux is now first in the GRUB boot menu list. After that you can use a tool like GParted or the Disc Image Tool to delete the new 50GB ...

Re: Recommended Wireless Router
It shouldn't. It's the clients (USB WiFi adapter, PCI card, etc.) that needs to work with the OS. I assume the original poster wants these parts to match, same brand, model, series, etc. to insure best performance.

I think in Mint 19 you have to use:
if gksudo does not exist.
Code: Select all
xed admin:///etc/hostname

Re: Installing new (replacement) USB network adapter
Not necessarily. The reason they typically come out with a new version is because they got a better deal from a competitor of the chip manufacturer they had been using. There is cut-throat competition in this market and no brand can afford to be locked into one vendor. Different chips require differ...

Re: Installing new (replacement) USB network adapter
What I've noticed with WiFi devices is that Two different devices of the same BRAND and MODEL are not necessarily the same device. You must also make sure that they are the same version. Often different versions use different chips and one may be compatible with Linux while the other is not.

Re: Questions for Mint users who have investigated Manjaro
apt-get install <blah> === pacman -S <blah> apt-get remove <blah> === pacman -Rs <blah> The trick is remembering that at the moment you need it. It would be easier to set up aliases for that in your .bash_login file or equivalent. Something like: alias my_install="pacman -S" alias my_remo...

Re: why are distros never updated?
Which version of Mint did you install, by the way? I noticed that Mint 19 had a lot more updates than 18.3. I assume because the last point release will have less to fix than the first release. If 6 months between point releases is too long for you, you can try MX Linux like Pierre mentioned. It is ...

Re: Questions for Mint users who have investigated Manjaro
I never gave Manjaro a chance beyond playing with it on a live release disc. I have moved over to Mint because I no longer have the time I used to to trouble shoot problems. For me Mint is quick & easy to install and maintain on my old equipment. Running Cinnamon now. When that becomes too deman...

Re: When did you come to Linux?
Like the OP I started with Mandrake in 2000. Unlike the OP I didn't really have any problems or catch flak from the Linux community by asking questions. My background was different. I do not come from a MS PC background. I was using Solaris at work and commodore Amigas at home. The Amiga was long de...

Re: GRUB Seems To Be Missing From SSD
Try this to reinstall grub: Boot from your USB stick with Mint on it. Open a terminal and run sudo fdisk -l to see where Linux is installed on your SSD. Run sudo mount /dev/sdaX /mnt where x is the partition number Linux is on your SSD. If you have a separate /boot partition mount that also: /dev/sd...

Re: Install Mint Mate over Ubuntu Mate on Window Dual-Boot
You can use Gparted on the install disc to delete the partition that UM is on followed by the installation. It should see the free space and offer to install Mint there. Just make sure that you do install it because you just blew away your grub boot manager and you will no longer be able to boot int...

If you are just looking to fill in and save/print pdf forms, I thought the default Mint reader (Evince/Xreader) would do that for you. I remember using it to print out my tax forms.

Re: Mint 17.3 low on disk space
I have a large external HD. Could I just copy the Home folder to that drive. I was also thinking about upgrading to mint 18.3 or 19 then put the copied Home folder back in? I figured that was what you were going to use your free space for since 17.3 will stop being supported next year. You can inst...
