Re: Speccing a new Machine

Is that USD? If so that equates to Aussie dollars $1,560. Now lets spec that up with prices locally. TOTAL AUD $1,656 So close, just a touch more. That's interesting. Updated the list. Forgot I had a Mother Board DOA and got the MSI instead. I got some great sale items before and after X-mas here i...

Re: GPARTED advice from a noob

Don't you think it's more likely your drive was already going bad, which is why your system was locking up. I did think that. I did run the BIOS tests on all hardware in the laptop and they all passed. Nevertheless, called Lenovo and since this is their business line of laptops it has a 3 ye...

Re: Speccing a new Machine

I too just built a new PC for this winter. I didnt need the power from all the parts below but its nice to rip DVD and Bluray discs quickly and have enough power to game. The entire build was about 1100. Why do you need excel? LibreCalc has been sufficient for me to do my spreadsheets even with some...

Nextcloud and Gaming

I will be frank, I am not sure of this working at all. I understand that FreeNAS is something you would dedicate to a machine. However, can nextcloud on a desktop be supported in parellel to gaming on the same rig? Basically can you have it be a media server, network storage and backup while the Des...

Re: Problem with Broken Graphic Driver (Nvidia)

It has been sometime running with the graphics driver not working. Decided to get it working after I bought a new 4k TV where my desktop is connected too. Well... when you decide to do a complete fresh install, no PPA's and using the device manager to load the right driver. POOF it all works correct...

Hi all, 1 year into Linux

All, I just saw this thread so I thought I should say hi. about 1 year ago my old HP laptop kicked the bucket. I bought a new T580 Lenovo and it came with Windows 7. I was very surprised. For about year earlier I have been lurking into Linux but never had the guts to install. I upgraded to Windows 1...

Re: Workflow for Ripping DVD and BRs

Just using MakeMKV does not run the CPU hot for DVDs. What I have found with one of the BRs I had to use MakeMKV first then compress it down with Handbrake. I just started using MakeMKV with a set DVDs (Deadliest Catch) it will copy it quickly (about 15 min for 2x43min shows) at a full size (~1.6gb)...

Workflow for Ripping DVD and BRs

All Looking for a workflow on ripping DVDs and BRs I am doing MakeMKV for the BluRays then using Handbrake to compress For DVDs I go straight to Handbrake. I do one disc at a time. I was thinking on running MakeMKV one disc at a time then doing large and long Handbrake Que to run overnight. Thoughts?

Re: Problem with Broken Graphic Driver (Nvidia)

I did try from the PPA first. After I am done with the DVD ripping project, I will re-install the OS and start only the driver manager. I will report back in a few weeks

Re: Problem with Broken Graphic Driver (Nvidia)

get rid of the ppa apt update purge nvidia again reboot install the drivers in the driver manager ** after the PPA and nvidia was purged it only gave me one option for the drive which was the version 390. I thought that was significant as I had 4 options with the PPA's reboot ** Package Operation Fa...
