Software index is broken?

I use a voice program called Discord and when I went to open it up this morning there was a forced update. I could choose either a .deb or a .tar. Neither one will work, they both tell me that the "Software index is broken" and to check /etc/apt/sources.list and do the whole sudo apt-get update blah...

Updating usbutils

I am sorry that this question is so noob to start with. I am looking for information on how to update usbutils because the version in the repository is out of date. I am having issues with Mint not recognizing my mouse and keyboard sometimes and after some extensive googling, I have a few fixes to t...

How do passwords work?

I was reading some articles online about intel having some memory leaks that could potentially give malware access to kernel memory that contain things like your passwords. I fully understand a lot of these "articles" are just clickbait trying to work people into a frenzy to get views, but it got me...

Re: Donation

Not good news, but I told you I would update when I talked to my friend. He said without something like PayPal there really isn't a way to convert currency from those pre-paid cards. He did however bring up a good point. There are other methods of payment that will do a currency exchange automatical...

Re: Donation

It is there (here) but for local currency, not for USD. But still I will try to find from the bank. I have a friend who deals with all kinds of currencies from around the world. I will ask him if there is a way to get local currency on a pre paid card converted somehow. It's a bit late here right n...

Re: Donation

I'm not sure where you live, nor how things work everywhere, but in a lot of countries there are pre-paid debit cards. I use that for 99.9% of my internet transactions because I don't like putting my personal debit card info out there. Maybe you can check into whether or not an option like that is a...

Re: Why do so many programs not have a Linux port?

I'm not really looking for any softwares in particular. There is only one thing I can't run on Linux, so I keep Windows dual booted and when I want to play it, I load up into windows (it feels like taking off a comfy sweater and putting on a turtle neck that's too small xD.) I'm just asking question...

Why do so many programs not have a Linux port?

Pretty straight forward, I was looking for the answer online but couldn't find a direct answer. Why is it that so much software is not made available on Linux? I have a feeling it has to do with something more than just software manufacturers not wanting to take the time to do it. With how large the...

Re: Security in Linux. Any other ideas?

Finally, something I can weigh in on! As for VPN's there are a few cardinal truths. 1) No free VPN is worth using. If you aren't paying it for it, you are the product being sold. Unless you know someone that has a personal network they are using as a VPN, you are going to pay for a VPN service. Don'...

Re: A few hickups in Mint

So putting this out there to bump the thread and update. Since upgrading my kernel to the latest version my keyboard hasn't had any issues, but my mouse is still acting up. Most of the time when I get to the log in screen the mouse doesn't work and I have to unplug it then plug it back in a few time...

Re: Question about viruses.

Thank you. I just wanted to get my facts straight really. I have some other people interested in trying out Linux Mint and I wanted to be sure I gave them accurate information! And I had previously seen that site you mentioned. That gentleman (or people, not sure how many of them work on it) have a ...

Outside PPAs

I have read around about outside PPAs and found some really good material about them. The one thing that pretty much everyone agrees on is that outside PPAs can be a huge security risk. I was wondering how more experienced users than me deal with installing software. Is it safer to compile source co...

Question about viruses.

One of the first things I learned when I decided to give Linux a shot was that there are no viruses that can infect a Linux system. In searching around and reading since installing I have come to realization that the previous statement isn't 100% true. I have the understanding that a virus CAN infec...

Advice from one newb to another!

So I am new to Linux in general, and have so far really enjoyed my experience. There were some hick ups, and will probably be more, but my overall experience has been unfathomably better than with Windows. I had asked a couple questions in another part of the forums and the gentleman that answered h...

Re: A few hickups in Mint

So far so good. Tried updating to the newest 4.10 with nothing happening, but I upgraded to 4.13.0-21 and so far so good. It doesn't happen EVERY time, so I will see how it goes over the next couple days, hopefully that fixed it! Thank you for your help! As a side note, the links in your signature a...

Re: A few hickups in Mint

Here is the results of that. Also, it JUST happened again to my keyboard when I booted into Mint, when I unplugged the keyboard and plugged it back in, it was working a few seconds later. So it is not a world shattering problem, but definitely annoying. System: Host: dead-lighter Kernel: 4.10.0-38-g...

A few hickups in Mint

I apologize ahead of time if this is not the correct forum, I wasn't 100% sure on where to put this! So I have been using mint for about 5 days now and I am loving it, there have been a couple hickups that I have found though that are rather annoying. The first one deals with my keyboard and mouse. ...

Re: A few newbie questions

SSDs are generally faster but how are you measuring operating system speed? As far as games go I play all of mine in a Windows system. A virtual machine will have limited graphics memory and by definition less system RAM. If you want to try one I recommend VirtualBox There are more and more Linux b...
