Re: akonadi not registered at dbus

Update...No matter what I tried I could not get akonadi to run for a couple of days. This morning I boot my computer and.....voila....magic...spooky. It works every time. What the heck?

akonadi not registered at dbus

OK. I admit it. I wandered off the MIint farm for a while. I distro hopped to OpenSuse, then Kubuntu, then PC Linux OS and they all had this problem. As soon as Mint 16 KDE came out I came back. I also thought I was gonna get lucky this time. Nope. It functioned fine for a week then this again. I al...

Samba in a workgroup share - Mint 16 KDE 64 - No Joy

I'm trying to network two workstations using samba. I've installed lot's of distros and samba before, but this just has me baffled. Both workstations are HP XW8600's with dual quad-core 3Ghz Xeons and 32G of DDR2 RAM. They have nVidia GT520 graphics cards and 2TB SATA drives. They also have dual 1GB...

Re: Microsoft is Doomed

I still think Microsoft is in for some rough times. Since this whole NSA snooping thing came out, people have become more conscious of privacy. It has been coming out in the press that Microsoft (Apple too) colluded with big government to put a backdoor in their operating systems. This in itself wil...

Re: Why mint hates KDE?!

I know that Cinnamon is a nice desktop environment that Mint can be proud of. Their execution of Cinnamon works well and differentiates the Mint team from all the other distributions. Though I like it, I also prefer KDE. Though there are other KDE centric distributions, Mint does many things well th...

Re: Microsoft is Doomed

I in no way was predicting the extinction of Microsoft. But their former glory will have been drastically eroded by many of the factors I brought up. I actually think Windows 7 is a decent product. I really dislike Windows 8 though. I know that I am not alone in this sentiment. It's not as good look...

Microsoft is Doomed

It's been said before. But I believe this more so now than ever. There are a few reasons why Windows 8 is doomed. Chris Woolum (my future son-in-law) brought up the point about mobile phone pervasive success causing the implosion of desktop sales. That might be true to a significant degree. I read a...

Atheros AR9285 - Mint 14 KDE 64

I checked everywhere here and elsewhere and I'm baffled. I built a little Atom based PC with an Atheros mini-PCIe AR9285 wifi chip. I first installed Win7 on it. The wifi works great there. Then I installed Mint 14 KDE 64. I could not get the wifi working. So I plugged in the Ethernet cable and did ...

Re: My New (Refurbished) HP Monster with Mint 14

Nice system, and great price. Comes up to about $500 + Windows all together doesn't it? I think I still prefer the used consumer systems though. Especially when they contain last year's flagship GPU. Also, if you have an extra $100, Tiger Direct has a 160GB Intel 320 SSD that would round ...

My New (Refurbished) HP Monster with Mint 14

Here is how I bought a great refurbished computer to run Linux. I would also like to make it clear that I have no interest in any of these companies. I had a Pentium 4 computer for a few years that I had built for myself with an Intel D915GAG motherboard. It proved to be a faithful workhorse but was...

Re: Mint 14 on High Performance Hardware

If you don't need native graphics acceleration under Windows - i.e. if you don't have any need for dual-boot - you probably won't need VGA passthru. @Powerhouse, my previous computer was a homebuilt P4 with 4GB of memory. It was maxed out and worked fine for years. But it was time to retire it. I i...

Re: Mint 14 on High Performance Hardware

snapshot1.png XW8600.png I'm dual booting with Windows 7 Pro 64-bit and Mint 14 KDE 64-bit. When I first got it it had 4GB install in 4 each 1GB DIMM's. But I pulled those out and plugged in 8 each of some 4GB DIMM's. I tweaked some other stuff since I have put it all together too. I haven't done a...

Re: Mint 14 on High Performance Hardware

Nice setup you got, Rudemeister. I wonder if you could run a Xen hypervisor and your Win 7 as a VM with VGA passthrough? Well, Powerhouse, I know that 3D acceleration in the VM's I have now doesn't exist. I've only been using Virtualbox. So you're saying that 3D acceleration works in Xen, but not w...

Re: Mint 14 on High Performance Harware

The kernel installed fine and worked a treat, except it busted the AMD proprietary drivers so I purged the new kernel. This is exactly why I avoid AMD video cards. They work okay in Windows, but often choke on Linux. That's why I advise all who will listen to go with Nvidia if you are going to go L...

I just added the "edgers" PPA to all the systems I administer. This hasn't borked one with modern hardware. I did bork one with an old Nvidia chip, but I went into a terminal session and returned the driver to 304.64. The kernel has been fine.

Mint 14 on High Performance Hardware

I keep hearing about how Linux Mint runs fine on low resource hardware. I think that's nice. But I have Mint 14 KDE 64-bit running on some great hardware and it cranks! I bought one of these HP XW8600 Workstations as a refurbished system on eBay. If you're interested, there are plenty more of them f...
