Re: Why do so many people recommend Arch over Mint?

It used to be Debian! Now it's Arch. When I was on Ubuntu, the snobs and elitists were all saying it's for kids (well that's okay with me since I'm a kid anyway), and "real" Linux users use Debian. I still hear it on social media now that I've moved up to Mint (Xfce). But instead of Debian...

Re: Window manager options.

I played around with E for a bit. It's certainly beautiful and much less of a resource hog than any full desktop environment. Support for it is lacking, though, and I didn't find it "intuitive" at all. After a few days of confusion and bewilderment, I came back to Xfce.

Re: Wish list for Mint 21.2+

Replace Timeshift with Systemback . No flames here, just say'n there would be two great advantages: Simplicity is the first one, since Systemback has nice, simple, clickable menus. But the second and best advantage is that Systemback adds the ability to make a bootable .iso of your existing system ...

Re: Best email services with Linux

I recommend Vivaldi browser with integrated mail client. ... ... The advantage: You can operate the mail client in the sidebar and stay in the browser, so you don't need an extra program like Thunderbird. Seamonkey does that as well: All the coolness of both Firefox and Thunderbird in a single open...

Re: Ubuntu exploring to go total containment mode using Snaps

One of the worst things about Windows® was it's immutability. I could change wallpaper and font sizes and such, but it was in no way as configurable as any Linux desktop. Heck, there are window managers with better options for cry'n out loud. I expect Mint would either have to expand it's own reposi...

Re: chromium no longer working

The same thing happened with my Brave browser (based on Chromium) after an update last week. I replaced Brave with Chromium (.deb, not Flatpak) and it has been fine. Let it be for now. These things usually "fix themselves" with future updates.

Re: Chromium and Brave stopped working

I installed Brave from a PPA and it worked fine until yesterday's update, which did not include Brave. Then it did that weird flashy desktop appearing and disappearing act. I'm leaving it be for now because this kinda stuff is usually fixed in a future update, but in the meantime I installed Chromiu...

I, too, am from a faraway planet. A technophobe from a whole race of technophobes (see my story in my signature), but I ended up making friends with an android and using Linux on two computers! Amazing considering how technology spooks me.

Welcome to the forums!

Re: Color me impressed (Zorin OS)

If someone wants a Windows-like Ubuntu derivative, Linux Lite is much better (imho); and uses 22.04 as its code base. And that's why I landed here, on Linux Mint (Xfce), precisely because it's ℕ𝕆𝕋 trying to be "just like Windows®. I freakin' ℍ𝔸𝕋𝔼 Windows! Why in heck would I want to replace it...

Re: All Desktop Screenshots of 2023

Yup, as I thought... almost no difference at all - in Xfce at least - between a panel and a dock. My customized panel is, short, centered along the bottom edge, with custom icons and all the applets I want. It doesn't make sense to add more software that does the same thing my panel does perfectly a...

Re: All Desktop Screenshots of 2023

I made it to be comfortable, not to show off. Oh, and to have as much applets close at hand as possible :)] Me too, but at school it would be kinda fun to show off on the laptop for that kid who keeps looking over my shoulder. But I wonder, looking at these awesome looking desktops: What is the dif...

Re: Timeshift reliability problems.

At the moment, Timeshift overall reliability is poor, confidence in Timeshift is low, and users should have another system backup solution (I use also Foxclone). I use SystemBack . Forked from the old unsupported version, the new one is fully supported AND allows me to make a bootable iso of my exi...

Re: "No Bills"!!

The only place most of my friends use computers at all is at school. They even do their homework at school because you can't do it on a cellphone. I'm still using an old hand-me-down 'puter at home, and not just for school. Everything is done better on a desktop or a laptop than on a cellphone. I th...

Re: why chrome is not popular

Chrome browser is Number One in the world. Even some Linux distros have it as their default browser for that reason. But it's a Google product and Google has become untrustworthy for all it's "woke" stuff, and search results that match their own agenda rather than the user's requirements. ...

Re: I never liked Linux Mint

I didn't like Mint the first time I tried it either. I thought it had all kindsa extra junk that wasn't needed in a computer used just for schoolwork and internet stuff. I'm not a gamer either just because I'm no good at those massive multi-player online games, but all my friends are gamers. Two of ...

Re: Timeshift ?

Transferring my existing system to another computer is one thing I do a little bit of, once in a while. Re: Xfce Edition ?

What I like best about Xfce, besides it's being so highly configurable yet super simple, is it's slow development , believe it or not. New versions don't have huge, sudden, drastic changes to major features like Gnome and KDE have had, where it seems as if by updating them you got a whole 'nother in...

Re: 4 Years On Linux - Annual Update!

I have strayed off and tried other distros for the following reasons: I read someone's opinion piece about some evil cancerous spyware called "systemd" and got scared. I wanted a "pure" experience, just to see what "pure" meant. I wanted bragging rights among my geeky f...
