GUI, pdf capable, text-to-speech (TTS) for LM?

Hi, am am looking for a GUI TTS (text to speech) program for Linux Mint that can read pdf files. And it needs to be suitable for a low tech-skilled user.
And have very basic set-up instructions available.

Re: HP printer: how to get printing from Firefox happening?

@ Karichen Current situation: Can print files on HDD from HP Device manager. Can print from Firefox sometimes: normal "print this webpage" works. Can not print theater* ticks that appear in a pop-up window. Can print those tickets if I save the page as a file and then print that file. Can't print th...

HP printer: how to get printing from Firefox happening?

A very low skilled user here. I am having trouble printing from Firefox and some other programs on my HP ENVY. And read that the way forward is to uninstall and re-install HPLIP. https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=51&t=263948&p=1431368&hilit=printer+reinstall#p1431368 I have done that and ...

Re: Mint boots into Blackscreen [SOLVED]

I've got this happening after a new install of LM 18.3 MATE, followed by updating. Unfortunately for me the posts above might as well be in rongo-rongo, Chinese characters or Cryllic for all the sense they make to me. While I might eventually be able to follow instructions through, the 4 days that I...

Update Manager panel/window too big. [SOLVED]

The Update Manager panel/window is too big. I can't get to whatever is at the bottom of it and so all the options like "Install Updates" are greyed out. Fresh install of LM 18.3 with Mate desktop. Very low tech user who finds this scenario eerily familiar from Microsoft times. How to shrink window? ...

Change font size when when printing from xed text editor?

I would like to change the font and point size of the documents that I print using xed 1.6.3. I currently have Preferences>Font & Colours>Editor Font set to Samanta Italic 14 But it is printing the same font and point as when set at Monospace 10 The text in the display window changes with changes in...

Hey, you've got a noob here. So expect nothing technical from me. :? I've read your post. Have you found a way forward? Is what you are after some way to get IPSEC VPNs working on your machine in Linux Mint? If so maybe try editing the thread title to "How to get IPSEC VPNs happening on Linux Mint?".

Re: How to transcode audio files (GUI, multiple files, variety of formats, low tech skilled)

I've just tried both Clementine and soundKonverter, looking to convert / transcode a file from youtube with a .webm extension. Neither seem able to handle webm files. This just being a single file I suppose this is a good time to learn how to use FFmpeg in a terminal. Though my other option would be...

Re: Software Manager: How can I help keep it's offerings up to date?

The explanation offered here https://sites.google.com/site/easylinuxtipsproject/21#TOC-When-do-I-get-the-latest-version-of-an-application-or-driver-by-means-of-the-regular-updates- for the presence of non-functional software in Software Manager fails to take into account the needs of many low tech u...

Re: Software Manager: How can I help keep it's offerings up to date?

I'm puzzled. XP-refugee wrote, "I've found the current version of gImageReader available through Software Manager (Version 3.1.2 I think) just gives me n copies of the same one page, where n is the number of pdf pages being OCR'ed." Pjotr, apparently in reply wrote, "However, if it works reasonably ...

Software Manager: How can I help keep it's offerings up to date?

I've found the current version of gImageReader available through Software Manager (Version 3.1.2 I think) just gives me n copies of the same one page, where n is the number of pdf pages being OCR'ed. Whereas Version 3.2.3 available here , at Sandro Mani's launchpad page, works as expected and gives ...

Re: Mint on low-end hardware?

I'm looking at this Asus AJ6 (2006) that I'm working at and wondering .... I know it is much higher specced than the computers that harris is focussing on. (I think can even plug a T9700 cpu into it and have got 3 GB RAM recognised). But I can take the RAM back down to 512MB and put the T2300E cpu b...

Re: How to transcode audio files (GUI, multiple files, variety of formats, low tech skilled)

Yes, I just had a look at soundKonverter and it looks good. It is a stand-alone program just built for transcoding. After installing it and trying to run it it wouldn't work but gave me instructions. The instructions were just a bit above my skill level so I guessed and opened a terminal and cut kbu...

Re: Mint on low-end hardware?

Yes I had heard of a swapfile. And bumped into a pagefile.sys on Windows. But didn't know they were the same thing. Or even what they do. Or that that was what MS was running on the thumbdrives. IT for me is a lot like driving a car with a intermittently detached steering wheel. Sometimes, for reaso...

How to transcode audio files (GUI, multiple files, variety of formats, low tech skilled)

I had troubles finding a way to transcode audio files. I needed something with a graphical user interface (GUI), that would automatically name the output files, handle multiple files at a time, give me a fairly wide choice of types of file output (flac, mp3, wav, etc) and would "just work" as my tec...

Re: Mint on low-end hardware?

This is just the idle speculation of the deeply ignorant and I can see tar, feathers and a rail in my immediate future but: At some stage mid-Pleistocene, when onboard RAM was hard to come by due to the Missoula Floods as the ice-dam cracked, MS had some way of using thumb-drives as extra ram for th...

Re: New user evaluates Linux after one month on Mint

Thanks to Pjotr for the tweaking guide links. Even with only 1Gb of ram things worked better. And then the 4Gb of DDR2 ram arrived from China. But only 3GBof it is visible/usable due, not to the 32 bit OS limitation but, to a chipset limit which reserves the space over3 Gb for "other things". (I che...

Re: New user evaluates Linux after one month on Mint

At least, that's how I felt, two years ago. I'll predict that there is, and will be, a wide range of confidence amongst those who have successfully moved from XP to Linux. I took me some 18 years of trying and failing before I got here. I've got ?40 hours of experiencing attempted moves to Linux as...

... Many software and hardware are dropping support for or do not support Win XP, eg the Chrome and Firefox browsers, SSDs, etc. ... This, as they say, is my lived experience. As I wrote in the OP, "... XP being used by a large chunk of the world's computers and increasingly without support for sec...
