Do you have any speed or link sharing limits active on your synology for this share?
No, I do not. And my friend has normal speeds with SMB on the same nas, so it doesn't look like it's a problem with settings on the nas.

Extremely slow SMB connection to synology nas

Hi, I'm trying to mount a share on a synology DS418 NAS on my Linux MInt 18.3 system, in order to backup my external hard drive while i'm traveling. The NAS runs a vpn server, I connect to it with openvpn. Using this connection I can work with the webinterface of the NAS (I'm guessing that's https o...

active button not highlighted in Double Commander

Using Linux Mint 18.3 MATE, Mint-X theme customized with Spidey window borders. The problem I experience is that active buttons on confirmation panels in Double Commander are not highlighted with a coloured border, which makes it impossible to select a button using the keyboard (see attachment). I c...

Re: [SOLVED] how to wipe the list of deleted files?

Thanks for the suggestions, ntfswipe did the trick. I ran it with the -s option (-s, --undel: Overwrite the space which had been allocated to a file which has been deleted recently and is still undeletable.) That took about an hour on the same 4TB drive. The undelete function of Testdisk now only re...

Re: how to wipe the list of deleted files?

Thanks for your reply! But I'm afraid I did not express myself clearly enough. I think I understand how to wipe the files. I used three different methods: I used dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/hda[/code to overwrite the empty drive space, I used the "wipe empty space" feature of BleachBit, I used sfill ...

[SOLVED] how to wipe the list of deleted files?

Hi, I recently tried to erase every trace of deleted files by filling my hard drive with fake files, and by wiping free space with BleachBit and sfill. While this may make it hard or even impossible to undelete the files, it didn't stop the utility testdisk from producing a list of every file that h...

Re: Lock Screen stopped working, and Display now goes to sleep after inactivity

Let me guess, that's when your troubles started ? Actually not, it was the other way around, first the troubles started, then I tried a few things including uninstalling the screensaver. Anyway, putting the screensaver back did not solve the problem. What did solve the problem was uninstalling powe...

[SOLVED] Lock Screen stopped working, and Display now goes to sleep after inactivity

Hi, My settings have always been, and still are, that I don't want the computer or the display to go to sleep after inactivity. My system has always respected these wishes, until recently. Now: - Lock screen doesn't work anymore, clicking Lock Screen does absolutely nothing, AND - My display goes to...

Re: boot messages are not being logged

Thanks everyone for the input! I was aware of dmesg, journalctl and the logs in /var/log, but it seems only boot.log shows the boot messages, so that would also be the only place where I can see which processes [FAILED] during boot. @thx-1138: thanks for the tip, indeed I didn't have persistent logg...

Re: boot messages are not being logged

Should work in both cases. Did you make any other changes to the file? No, I didn't, that is the only line I changed. And a few reboots suggest that this line is the switch: commented out -> no log, not commented out -> log bootlogd isn't compatible with systemd, which is the init system Linux Mint...

wifi intermittent, frequent connection drops

Hi, I am a newbie using mint 18.3 mate My wifi is very unstable, the connection drops frequently while wifi keeps working on my phone and my very old win 7 laptop. There are also no wifi problems when i boot my linux laptop in win 10, so it doesn't seem to be a hardware problem. The drops can occur ...

Re: boot messages are not being logged

Thanks for the reply, sorry for not getting back sooner, i was sick in bed yesterday. With your help i figured out what I changed to make the logging stop, but I haven't figured out yet how to solve it. In /etc/default/grub, i commented out the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" in order...

boot messages are not being logged

Hi, using Mint 18.3 I'm trying to read the messages that fly by during bootup. They're supposed to be in /var/log/boot.log, but it seems my system is only "occasionally" logging the messages. Yesterday all day the log was empty, despite many reboots. After a re-install, the messages were in the log,...

[SOLVED] can't find where the boot messages are stored

Using Linux Mint 18.3 I know of - /var/log/boot.log - /var/log/syslog - /var/log/kern.log - journalctl - dmesg But they don't seem to contain the messages that fly by at high speed at startup and that begin with [ OK ] or [FAILED]. I have a variable number of FAILED's at each reboot but I can't read...

Re: [Solved] How to change Scrollbar width in Nemo in Mint 18

I'm using Linux Mint 18.2 cinnamon, and the solutions i find in this forum dont seem to work for me. I *do* reboot after making changes. The only thing i've been able to change so far is the width and color of the scrollbar in the start menu, by editing /usr/share/themes/Mint-X/cinnamon/cinnamon.css...
