Re: "open with Gimp" doesn't work in Shutter in Mint 19.3 Mate

Thanks, MrEen. I removed Shutter and re-installed with the new PPA, and I now have Shutter 0.94.3 instead of 0.94.1, but the problem persists. So, I couldn't fix it, but I found a workaround. The list of programs to "open with..." that pops up when you right-click an image, is compiled by ...

Hi Lord Boltar, thanks for replying.
Alas, I cannot add the PPA because 'This PPA does not support bionic'.

changes to menu in mint 19.3 mate not applied without new login

Hi! I just installed Mint 19.3 Mate. When I make changes to the menu, like manually adding programs or adding a program to the favourites menu, I have to log out and back in to apply the changes. This was not the case in Mint 18.3 Mate. There, though it could take a while, menu changes would eventua...

"open with Gimp" doesn't work in Shutter in Mint 19.3 Mate

Hi! Right-clicking on a screenshot in the screenshot tool Shutter gives the option to open the screenshot in a selection of programs, including Gimp. https://i.ibb.co/gT6v9yd/openwithgimp.png This has always worked in Mint 18.3 Mate, but since my recent move to Mint 19.3 it doesn't work anymore. I c...

Re: cannot change date or time in Mint 19.3

Hi, thanks for replying Larry78723. I found a solution on https://kerneltalks.com/commands/date-time-management-using-timedatectl-command/ Date/time can be checked and set with timedatectl The output shows whether the date is synced or not. To disable/enable syncing, use: timedatectl set-local-rtc 0...

[Solved] cannot change date or time in Mint 19.3

Hi, I need to change my system date in Mint 19.3, but Mint doesn't seem to allow it. I tried by setting the "time and date" control panel to manual and then changing the date, but after a few seconds date and time are reset to what Mint thinks it should be. When I use the command line, I d...

[Solved] customized scrollbars in firefox broken in Mint 20

Hi! Does anyone know how to customize the scrollbars in Firefox in Mint 20 Mate (Mint-X theme)? When I was still in Linux Mint 18.3 Mate, I coud tweaks gtkrc and gtk-widgets/gtk-main to widen and colorize the scrollbars in most applications, including Firefox. This customization still works for most...

Re: disable write-protection on usb stick

Hi, thanks everyone for replying. Alas, I have no idea if the flash drive was burned as ISO 9660, the USB image writer has no menu or options, I don't know what it does. It seems there was some information missing in my original post. Basically, the files on the usb stick don't take up the entire st...

disable write-protection on usb stick

Hi, I used USB Image Writer to write a Linux iso image to a usb stick. The stick is now write-protected. Is there a way to disable it? I tried sudo hdparm -r0 /dev/sdc1 to remove the write protection and then remounting the stick with sudo mount -o remount,rw /dev/sdc1 The hdparm command says it run...

see if they offer .ovpn files for download.
Thanks for the suggestion. I know they do. I had a chat with them already, they suggested using a different DNS server... I'll give that a try first, while I try to find out which of their ovpn files point to servers with acceptable speeds.

Re: cannot restart network connections

Have you checked that the firewall is disabled? Because it could be the firewall blocking traffic. Hmpf, good idea. No, I didn't, but I checked now, and it's not the firewall, I can ping with or without the firewall, it's the vpn that was blocking the ping. My problem might actually be related to t...

Re: cannot restart network connections

Thanks for your patience! Your "network settings" will tell you what your LAN gateway "default route" is. Try to ping that IPV4 address. I found a "default route", but I can't ping it: "ping: sendmsg: Operation not permitted" I assume you are using a USB-WIFI ...

Re: cannot restart network connections

Can you ping the gateway router and/or other machines on the LAN? I wouldn't know how to do that. I'm connecting to either the public wifi of the guesthouse where I'm staying, or to a usb wifi dongle. The dongle has an ip address, I could try to ping it next time I lose my connection. No other mach...

Re: cannot restart network connections

I was too fast, within 24 hours after posting previous post, the connection has stopped working twice. It's not the browser, and login out and back in does not help. I have to reboot. After reboot, the connection works fine, so it's not the connection. I reconnected to the 2 internet providers I hav...

Re: cannot restart network connections

It's been 2 weeks now since I upgraded the kernel to 4.15, in that time the original problem occurred only one time. So that seems to have been the issue.
Tnx for the suggestion!

cannot restart network connections

Hi, 2-3 times a day my network connection stops working. The network manager is still active and the netspeed applet says there is 10-20kbit/s of traffic, but no website will ever load or refresh. The only thing that solves the problem so far is to reboot, which is most inconvenient. I have already ...
