Securing my desktop Linux Mint FTP server

Over the course of the past few weeks I have been setting up my first real server that I hope to be able to release in the wild soon enough. I was looking for some advice about my setup before I finally turn it on and expose it to the internet. I am running a home FTP server using proFTPD version 1....

Re: Wired Network Disabled on Startup when VPN Auto-Connect Enabled on Linux Mint Tessa Cinnamon

I actually have this exact issue myself and I usually have to manually "tick" the wired connection myself to get the connection going. Another thing I noticed is that if you actually just let your computer sit there for 5-10 minutes after boot up and once you enter your login password the wired conn...

FTPS server on Mint with pure-ftpd *solved*

Fixed. Switched to pro-ftpd, much easier to use and did not have any issues, much better documentation as well.

Re: Security risk from not updating to latest version

In a particularly cautious and/or cynical frame of mind I would say that is your only potential issue. I take it the vendor is trustworthy and you verified the image on the CD as genuine? I did not, naively I must say. I originally installed Linux as a joke, sort of just something to see if my home...

Why is HTTPS such a big deal nowadays?

For the past maybe 5 years or so I've been hearing the constant harping about "HTTPS", recently the big players like Google, web browser makers, etc want to list sites that still use HTTP has "unsafe" or somehow blacklist them. I get what HTTPS is, I use encryption everywhere myself, SSL/TLS connect...

Security risk from not updating to latest version

Been running Linux Mint 18.2 Cinnamon now for 4 months originally installed off a CD I bought on Amazon. The main reason I switched to Linux was for the increased security. Privacy & security are my #1 concerns however usability/ease of use is important as well and Linux really kicked my butt in tha...

Re: Asus Essence STX II and ALSA/Pulse Audio crashing

So as it turns out I found out the whole crashing thing is an Asus issue... An issue with their sound cards and their motherboards, or potentially both of those and nvidia graphics cards. I stumbled upon this after because I tried installing the full proprietary GUI driver for the Asus card in Windo...

Re: Best usenet reader/usenet provider?

Ended up using the latest version of Thunderbird and this provider called frugal usenet, got it all setup in a few hours. Works fine out of the box with my Open VPN client configured through Mint's Network Manager. It's a really interesting throw back, definitely something I wanna partake in but the...

Re: Best affordable hardware firewall/router

Ended up going with the Edge Router X, I figured the NAT/Firewall provided by this will be an upgrade over the vulnerable ISP all-in-one unit, it's analytics features as well should be useful in trying to sniff out any attacks or suspicious programs trying to access the net or prod my system. For fu...

Best usenet reader/usenet provider?

Looking to give usenet a serious shot as something to mess around with/have fun with. Unfortunately or maybe fortunately depending on your perspective I was never old enough to have used usenet in it's hayday, geocities and the rest of the www pub net was my thing. So two things, is there a go to be...

Re: Best affordable hardware firewall/router

I'm really not looking to build something from scratch e.g. pfSense box, VM firewall router, flashing, etc, it's not that I can't but I simply do not have the time to do another build, troubleshoot, spend days on end on the forums getting things to work. I already have those issues running a Linux O...

Best affordable hardware firewall/router

I'm looking at really stepping up my game when it comes to security. I've only recently become aware of how crucial routers are in protecting your computer from internet threats. I used to plug my computer directly to the modem in early broadband days and used the cheapest router at 10 year life cyc...

Re: DNS Leaking when using VPN

Okay so I added block-outside-dns to my .ovpn, it sort of seemed to work but after connecting/disconnecting quickly and then testing my DNS using a few websites I did manage to get my DNS to leak. I did the steps outlined in the thread sammiev linked to. https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=...

Re: DNS Leaking when using VPN

If this is not the correct solution, and somebody knows how to stop the DNS leaks please help. From one of the links you posted above... https://www.dnsleaktest.com/how-to-fix-a-dns-leak.html Try the openvpn solution. What exactly is the "openvpn" solution, I am using openvpn as it came installed i...

Re: Asus Essence STX II and ALSA/Pulse Audio crashing

To clarify, then: certain features of your card were only available in alsamixer if pulseaudio was disabled; using alsamixer with pulseaudio would result in a crash; you get no sound with pulseaudio disabled? I don't know why it would crash. What I can try to do is help you avoid pulseaudio and acc...

DNS Leaking when using VPN

So I just got started using a VPN, Mint 18.2 x64 is my OS, I'm using VyprVPN, using the OpenVPN "protocol" if that's what it's called on Mint. I set it up using this page on their website, following exactly to a T what they said. https://support.goldenfrog.com/hc/en-us/articles/227258228-VyprVPN-Ope...

Re: Asus Essence STX II and ALSA/Pulse Audio crashing

I'm not really following... I need to know how I can get audio to route through so it works without pulse audio, only alsa/alsamixer Because I belive pulse and alsamixer are causing the system crashes. If I disable pulse audio through editing the client.conf file under /etc/pulse I get no sound. You...

Asus Essence STX II and ALSA/Pulse Audio crashing

Hello, I'm a relatively new Linux users, 2 months in now. Got started off an 18.2 Sonya 64bit CD I bought off Amazon and installed into the new PC I built. I can list further specs if they become relevant but it's an AMD build, Ryzen 5 1600, running on an X370 chipset Asus PrimeA board, with an nVid...
