Re: Consequences of using an older kernel

Got the attached. Jeremy, good news. I tried pretty much everything on the internet to get the wifi working...as it turns out I had to physically disassemble the laptop and switch the wifi adapter from one node to another as you had suggested awhile ago. This may work for others who are using rtl87...

Mint does not allow you to change distributions?

Hi guys,

I have been trying to run a couple of other more lightweight distributions on an old netbook that has been having problems with Mint lately, but I cannot boot anything successfully. What gives? It would have been nice to know of this restriction before I installed Mint...

Re: Consequences of using an older kernel

You can use sudo dkms uninstall rtlwifi-new/1.0 -k 4.15.0.29-generic and see if wifi works in that kernel again I might have to put my HDD with Mint back in the laptop with the rtl8723be and see if I can reproduce the issue, post results from terminal for history | grep clone Here's the result 81 g...

If .36 was already installed while you were on 29, you might have to do

Code: Select all

sudo dkms install rtlwifi-new/0.6 -k 4.15.0-36-generic
See what happens
It returned

Code: Select all

Module rtlwifi-new/0.6 already installed on kernel 4.15.0-36-generic/x86_64

Re: Consequences of using an older kernel

A better fix for you wifi is sudo apt-get install git build-essential dkms git clone https://github.com/lwfinger/rtlwifi_new.git sudo dkms add ./rtlwifi_new sudo dkms install rtlwifi-new/0.6 I was hoping the issue would be fixed quickly in the kernel The dkms will build a good wifi module while a n...

Re: Consequences of using an older kernel

Oh okay, that's awesome. Yeah, I'm not super concerned about security...worst case they'll find out about my guilty pleasure Zydeco music...

Can someone link me to a guide to set ...29 as my default?

Consequences of using an older kernel

Hello all, If I use any kernel version beyond 4.15.0-29-generic my internet doesn't work on my netbook. I was just wondering what repercussions this will have (currently using Mint 19 w/MATE desktop environment). If I should install something like Lubuntu instead, is there any way I can put all the ...

Re: [SOLVED] Why Can't You Install VMWare Horizon on Linux Mint?

This seems like an obvious defect. Any time you download the installer it just takes a long time and then fails. UPDATE: Okay, you just cut and paste the file into your home folder. Then open a terminal and type sudo sh VMware-Horizon-Client-4.9.0-9507999.x64 I don't see why this is so damned hard ...

Slow Opening of Files on Desktop

Hello all, Pretty much what the topic says. It takes literally like two minutes to open a file folder and beyond that it loads interminably. I tried restarting Cinnamon using alt+f2+r but no dice. Below is my output from inxi -Fxz System: Host: Larry Kernel: 4.15.0-33-generic x86_64 bits: 64 gcc: 7....

Re: Bad WiFi on HP Stream - Mint 19 Edition

My WiFi randomly worked long enough to get that implemented...full-strength now and totally fine.

I will wait to mark this as solved since I get the sense this is maybe a stopgap measure

Re: Bad WiFi on HP Stream - Mint 19 Edition

The wifi is supported, can you take the laptop apart to see if you can change the connector that the antenna is connected to? Yeah, I will try to take care of that this weekend sometime. Meanwhile if you know any more terminal tricks I could try, I'm all ears! It's working from home for the moment,...

Re: Bad WiFi on HP Stream - Mint 19 Edition

Hi Jeremy,

Affirmative. 4.15.0-33-generic is the result from that command.

Is the issue that this (and possibly future) kernel updates do not support my hardware?

Re: Bad WiFi on HP Stream - Mint 19 Edition

Update: It only appears to be connected to my home network...it doesn't seem to be able to actually fetch anything. It may have been broken by an update (was working fine previously), but since this is a netbook, the hard disk isn't large enough to create a backup. In other words, I can't restore it...
