Re: Meltdown and 32-bit systems

Hello. Just wondering if there is any more news regarding security patches for 32 bit systems? Is there anything in the pipeline?

Meltdown and 32-bit systems

Hello all. I have been unable to find any recent updates on this. Have any security updates been issued for 32-bit systems in regard to Meltdown (and Spectre)? If not, what is the best plan of action if you are running a 32-bit system?

Re: Boot hang after Timeshift restore

I have done a fresh install of 18.3 xfce 32-bit and everything is running fine. All issues are gone. My only issue now is that I have just discovered that there are no security patches for 32-bit systems against Meltdown. Wondering if I can install a 64-bit version on a 32-bit machine but I have rai...

Re: Is Kernel up to date

Thanks for that. I'm wondering what you do if you have a 32-bit system like mine. According to the link there is no fix for it yet. Can you run a 64 bit version on a 32 bit processor?

Is Kernel up to date

Hello all, I've just done a new install of 18.3 XFCE 32-bit and have run the update manager. I'm a little bit confused about kernels (in general) and whether or not mine is up to date (particularly in regard to Meltdown and Spectre). The terminal says I am running 4.10.0-38-generic. Update Manager i...

Re: Boot hang after Timeshift restore

Thanks. I don't really keep anything of importance on my laptop, I save it all to an external hard drive. What is on there has been backed up so I'm thinking I will just bite the bullet and do a new install. I'm reluctant to keep using my laptop whilst I can't update it, not to mention the annoying ...

Re: Boot hang after Timeshift restore

I got the ol' "Unable to copy the user's Xauthorization file."

I don't think it's going to be a big deal for me to do a fresh install. Am I just better off going down that path?

Re: Boot hang after Timeshift restore

I suspect you're right. I did clean up as per other thread, but no good. As you can see from following dev/sda6 is full but I can't delete anything from it. I'm beginning to suspect that Timeshift is the culprit in all this as the snapshots are located in there (I don't think I set it up correctly)....

E: IO Error saving source cache
E: The package lists or status file could not be parsed or opened.

Re: Boot hang after Timeshift restore

Oh dear! I did the uninstall but now it won't let me reinstall. It won't even let me open synaptic, even from terminal. Guess what I get?

Unable to copy the user's Xauthorization file. !!!

I'm leaning towards a fresh install. May I assume it will (dis)solve these issues?

Re: Boot hang after Timeshift restore

I don't have System Monitor and now I can't open Software Manager. Comes up with this error:

Failed to run mintinstall as user root.
Unable to copy the user's Xauthorization file.
