Re: 5GHz Wifi connects but no Internet (or local net)

Just for the heck of it, I decided to wipe the installation before I did much more with it. I installed Mint 19.1(?) but the WiFi issue persisted. I wiped that off and am re-installing 18.3. It appears that only the open-source WiFi driver works for the 2.4GHz band (the other two b43 drivers yield n...

Re: 5GHz Wifi connects but no Internet (or local net)

The router is set to channel 40; that is one of the 5GHz channels listed when I run "iwlist channel".

Running "iwlist power" shows "wls4" as "on".

Re: 5GHz Wifi connects but no Internet (or local net)

Well, I spoke (wrote) too soon. I get about 30 seconds of connection then it's gone. The signal shows up in the lower task panel, the popup menu, and the Network. But no actual communications take place (after those first 30 seconds). Restarted a few times just for grins but no dice. I've tried a nu...

Re: 5GHz Wifi connects but no Internet (or local net)

What is your output from? - iwlist chan 2.4GHZ and 5GHZ channels should be listed. From another post: "I changed the Modem/Router channels on the 5GHz Network to: 36 40 44 48 Linux recognized 5GHz only when I changed to one of these four channels. In my case, any channel above 48 was not recognized...

Re: 5GHz Wifi connects but no Internet (or local net)

Settings for the 2.4GHz and 5GHz connections are identical ("Automatic"). I select the 2.4GHz network and everything works. I select the 5GHz network, Mint tells me I'm connected, but no Internet nor can I see anything in my local network. Attempting to ping my router is "unreachable". Once I switch...

WHy do you assume all those other codecs are safe?
We all know about Flash. Which one(s) do you not trust and why?

5GHz Wifi connects but no Internet (or local net)

This one has me really scratching my head. I have an early 2008 iMac that, when running macOS, connects to both 2.4GHz and 5GHz Wifi access points without trouble and can access all local network assets and the Internet. However, now that I've installed Mint 18.3 on it (with all recommended updates)...

Re: Disable my discrete graphics card

Just encountered another 15" MacBook Pro with defective video card. Did the same firmware update to disable the card and deleted the xserver entries. The Mac runs like a top now (in Mint, of course). Saved the unit from the recycling center. :D You make me eager to get one, too.... Apple makes grea...

Re: Eliminate Adobe Flash completely?

Thanks! That took care of it. It did also seem to remove some other things like VLC but that was easy to reinstall. I don't quite understand the philosophy that lumps Flash into the same category as other safe codecs. IMHO, Flash should be a choice all by its lonesome (which one may decline) when in...

Eliminate Adobe Flash completely?

When I installed Mint, I was asked if I wanted third-party media plugins including Adobe Flash. I approved this option but I'd really prefer not to have Flash installed at all as there's nothing I view using Flash and we all know it's a horrible security hole. So that's my question: How may I remove...

Re: libq5webchannel5 ??

Ahh!! I did not realize the numeric disparity; Thanks for your assistance. Now I can go back and download the correct version for my distro! (I'll have to put a stickie on the bezel so I don't forget this!) Edit: Yep; as expected, the proper version installed and runs. BTW, Corel Tech Support ...

libq5webchannel5 ??

I've downloaded and was trying to install AftershotPro (from the Ubuntu 16.10 ".deb" file) into Linux Mint 18.03. When I double-click the ".deb" file, the Package installer brings up a red flag saying "Error: Dependency is not satisfiable: libq5webchannel5(=>5.4.0)" and won't proceed. I've contacted...

Re: Why Linux Mint?

Why Mint? I have a 15" Dell Inspiron 7000 series with a Synaptics trackpad (and we know Synaptics makes the absolute best trackpads - Apple uses them!) yet, in Windows 10, two-finger scrolling results in unexpected jumps and scroll-backs; in short, it's a PITA. Microsoft's driver sucks, Dell won't e...

Re: Disable my discrete graphics card

Ahh; perfect. This (Mint) is really a great solution to the defective video card issue as I can keep running an up to date and secure OS in spite of running only mobo video.

Thanks for your help. As I learn more, perhaps I might help others. 😁

Thanks. Removed those items and rebooted. Now I'll play with some graphics apps and see how it all goes. So far, so good.

Disable my discrete graphics card

I have a 2011 15" MacBook Pro with one of the "fried" discrete AMD Radeon cards. Following some helpful advice I found online, I used a firmware command to turn off the card and then deleted all AMD 'kexts' (drivers) so, when the Mac boots in macOS Sierra , the motherboard Intel video chip is used, ...

Re: Boot manager needed for 2006 iMac

Thank you for your help. I had happened upon Rod's site last night but didn't try any of his instructions as it was late and I was tired. Glad to have your instructions in the light of day. :D
