Re: Monthly News – March 2019

Oh, come on guys! Look at the forest, not the trees! That Linux Mint and other distros exist at all is amazing. Most users take Mint for granted. Of course they do! It is a mark of success, just like when we crank the starter motor we take it for granted the car will start. Opinions on what is good ...

Re: Copy 18.3 data files to 19.1

Mint 19.1 is on sdd3. On the left is a list of disk drives. From 19.1 I can access the disk drive containing 18.3 and open the folders. However, it will be a laborious process copying many GBs of data manually from 18.3 to 19.1. Perhaps I should uninstall this version of 19.1 and use the published m...

Re: Copy 18.3 data files to 19.1

Thanks. To be clear, I am running a quadruple boot system with 18.3 as default. Originally it was triple boot but I had to install 19.1 to solve a problem - this was already dealt with on these boards. The other boots are Windows 10 and Kubuntu. I could not find a folder (?) on any disk called 'Plac...

Re: Copy 18.3 data files to 19.1

Thank you kato181.

Not sure I can access 18.3 folders from 19.1.

How to do that?

Copy 18.3 data files to 19.1 [Solved]

I have ended up for all sorts of reasons with both 18.3 and 19.1 versions of Mate. How best to copy data files (.mp4; .flac, .png etc) from the 18.3 version to the 19.1? I am not very Linux literate - I can use the terminal if not too complicated - in other words, when I use the terminal I like to u...

Re: Triple boot system will not boot [SOLVED]

One memory stick had millions of errors.

I sent the pair (16 months old) back to Overclockers UK and in four days I had a replacement matched pair from Corsair, no quibbles.

Thanks for help sorting this out.

Re: Triple boot system will not boot

Memtest showed millions of errors on one stick of Corsair DDR4 RAM. The other stick showed no errors in 7 hours.
The faulty stick is16 months old so should still be in warranty.

I will test the 'bad' stick in the other socket in case there is a mobo problem but it seems unlikely.

Re: Triple boot system will not boot

Sorry for not replying sooner, Pierre, but I have been backing up all week. I didn't dare re-boot the PC until this was complete. I am currently running Memtest86 5.01 which was an option on the Grub menu. Although I thought I had installed 19.1 from the live environment, that version isn't in the G...

Re: Triple boot system will not boot

As a last throw of the dice, I changed the boot order in the BIOS, not being sure which disk drive my 18.04 ext4 install was on. Originally, I had not been able even to get into the BIOS - in some way running the live environment version corrected this. Next time I booted, my old grub menu appeared ...

Re: Triple boot system will not boot

I went for broke and installed 19.1 alongside existing installations as allowed for in the install menu. The installation appeared to go smoothly but when I removed the medium to boot up from the disk drive, I just got a black screen with a blinking cursor top left. The BIOS boot order was correct. ...

Re: Triple boot system will not boot

Thanks, yes it will load the W10 media USB. But it doesn't give me an option to repair anything. It gives me the option to install W10, or to start in Safe Mode etc, plus some others - Enable Boot Logging, Debugging Mode, etc I will try to run off a new 19.1 environment, my current install is 18.04,...

Triple boot system will not boot [SOLVED]

I run Mint Mate 18.03, Kubuntu and Windows 10. The default boot is Mint. I updated both W10 and Mint this morning. Now, the machine doesn't boot. It freezes at the mobo welcome page. I get a message 'Please Press F2 or Delete to Enter UEFI Bios' but nothing happens with this. I tried a live boot but...

Re: rsync problem

Yes, thanks, philotux, this worked!

So, if I want to use rsync to copy a large directory with sub-folders, I should open it in the desktop?

Is this requirement just a quirk of Linux or Mint, or am I missing something obvious? Maybe it's time to go to v.19?

Thanks, again.

Re: rsync problem

Thanks, Flemur.

Exactly, rsync cannot find 'essen_a.png'.

The question is - why not? It is on the desktop as shown here. It is a real file with content which opens.

Any ideas what could be going wrong?

rsync problem

I would like to transfer files between PCs on my home network using rsync ( I think this uses ssh automatically now). Starting simple I tried to copy a file, essen_a.png, locally. The path below in terminal is the path shown in file properties. Obviously, something is not right! Screenshot at 2019-0...

gm10, you are a star!

I am very, very grateful! Everything is as it was - I can hardly believe it.

I had some backups but these were all over the place on another machine, USBs, cloud.

Deleted Boot and Data Partitions [SOLVED]

I accidentally deleted both partitions from a HDD, including boot and data. This disk is now unallocated completely as far as I can tell. I wish to recover these partitions. As I ran a dual boot, I can still boot into W10 x64. Can I recover my deleted Linux partitions using Windows? Or could I do it...
