Re: why isn't /home being unmounted ?

yup. that did it.

I moved my nfs4 mounts to /media which is sitting in the / partition, i.e. separated from the /home partition and now /home is unmounted cleanly.

do i need to generate a new uuid ?

Hi, I had some disk trouble and that caused me to have to do mkfs.ext4 on my /home partition. This of course broke the UUID identification of the partition. I simply updated the /etc/fstab to use /home instead of the UUID, but I just did an update and i saw this scary looking message Processing trig...

Re: why isn't /home being unmounted ?

i don have nfs partitions mounted under /home/nfs4

i'm wondering if that's why /home can't be unmounted.

maybe i should move them to the / partition ?

Re: why isn't /home being unmounted ?

LOL. No, i'm using shutdown from the menu or "shutdown -h now" from the command line.

and this is extremely consistent, i watch the shutdown messages and they always say that /home could not be unmounted.

why isn't /home being unmounted ?

While i was investigating my disk corruption issues, i discovered that /home was not being unmounted cleanly at shutdown. This is _still_ the case, and even though i haven't had a repeat of my file system problems, i'm wondering of course if it might have had something to do with the original proble...

Re: disk corruption ! need advice on what to do !

Just thought I would provide an update on this problem.

Haven't seen it since I last posted.

So for whatever reason the

mkfs.ext4 -c

command seemed to have solved the problem, maybe. I just want to reiterate that the command did NOT report any bad blocks.

Very strange...

Re: disk corruption ! need advice on what to do !

the unmount error messages are from shutdown, i.e. at shutdown there seems to be a problem unmounting the partition.

it's backed up ! i've already wiped out the partition once, put a new filesystem on and restored.

so now i wait...

Re: disk corruption ! need advice on what to do !

the benchmarks are all cpu/gpu related and not very interesting simply because i've had 0 problems in terms of things hanging, crashing, etc... this is part of the reason i'm not convinced that this is actually a hardware problem. even my browser should be crashing if directories all-of-a-sudden bec...

Re: disk corruption ! need advice on what to do !

Thanks for that. it definitely makes an easier view. the attributes section, under the "Failed" column has "never" for every single attribute, so no failures. The error log is showing 0 errors. so now i've run smartctl -l short : passed smartcl -l long : passed mkfs.ext4 -c : no bad blocks found i j...

Re: disk corruption ! need advice on what to do !

well you would think it would be disk fail, except the smartools say nothing is wrong, and i'm not seeing any other problems, in particular cinnamon comes up, all my apps run just fine, browser runs fine, etc... I'm currently running the long smart monitor test, the short one completed without error...

disk corruption ! need advice on what to do !

I've very recently, in the least 2 weeks, started seeing disk corruption on my laptop. The first time it happened i booted into maintenance mode and let fsck do it's thing. Although it found a lot of errors the majority of them were in my mail folder (of course). I thought maybe it was bad writes on...

ok, thanks. Doesn't look like it's in the start list.

Still kind of weird that it wants to uninstall cinnamon. That seems buggish.

more than one keyboard choice at login screen ?

Hi, I'm switching a computer to be used by someone else. I originally installed linux mint selecting dvorak as the default keyboard, and that's what shows up on the login screen. I would now like the user to be able to choose between dvorak and qwerty. Is that possible ? I found the /etc/default/key...

Re: user account missing from login screen

"by hand means" using 'adduser' on the command line, not using "Users & Groups". False alarm. I restarted the computer and the account now shows up. I had restarted the login screen by using "ctrl-alt-backspace" and the account still didn't show up. That's why I thought there was a problem. It turns...

user account missing from login screen

I recently had to add a user account by hand , and it looks like i'm the victim of abstraction complexity. the user i added, who is in group users, has an entry in /etc/passwd, has a home directory /home/user, etc... does not show up in the initial login screen. I found a information on how to fix t...
