Re: No longer prompted for my log-in password

Have you checked the users tab in administration->login window ?

there is a setting there for automatic login.

Re: booting to shell?

unfortunately that usually happens when there is a disk corruption problem and the normal disk checker was unable to recover. i know this from personal experience :-(

do you see any messages about fsck failing on a disk drive ?

Re: adding grub menuconfig for external HDD

yay ! works ! The final configuration was your example and applied the --fs-uuid flag in place of the --label flag AND keeping "insmod part_msdos". As i was thinking the part_msdos was correct because the external drive boot partition is NOT an EFI partition. You have to be observant becau...

Re: adding grub menuconfig for external HDD

yes i do understand the difference between using the label and uuid. however, i went into the grub boot entry at boot (i forgot you can edit the entry) and in fact it looks like i used --label by accident. so i need to fix that. however, i DID edit the entry, substituted the --fs-uuid flag in place ...

Re: adding grub menuconfig for external HDD

Perfectly normal and expected outcome of an update-grub operation with the external's OS installation available for discovery by os-prober. oh.... that's what that does. that's rather impressive that it can figure that stuff out. i'm assuming it's the thing that also figures out that windows is the...

Re: adding grub menuconfig for external HDD

so a weird thing happened. as near as i can figure out when i run grub-update it AUTOMAGICALLY created boot entries for my external hard disk. I'm sure of that because the example you supplied is named and i can see the named entry in addition to the named entry. Humorously i'm going to have to rebo...

Re: adding grub menuconfig for external HDD

Hi, so what you wrote should go in 40_custom in /etc/grub.d ? and yes, i have a UEFI setup, or at least i'm seeing insmod part_gpt in the current /boot/grub/grub.cfg in regards to the --label option, if were to use the UUID, would i use the --fs-uuid option, correct ? Let's test my understanding. So...

[SOLVED] adding grub menuconfig for external HDD

Hi, I have a working system, but i'm having filesystem corruption problems, so i'm trying to set-up a parallel system using an external hard disk. i've already installed mint on the HDD, so it has everything it needs, and in fact if i use it as the USB boot device, mint comes up. however... what i w...

Re: filesystem corruption AGAIN

gsmartmontools is the package that i'm thinking of and has a really nice interface. i know i've done this before but i'm running the extended self test again. gsmartmontools has highlighted the reallocated sector count and reallocation event count. They are both highlighted "pink" meaning ...

Re: filesystem corruption AGAIN

Here it is. I forgot te mention that the first 3 instances of this problem were under 19.3. i just installed mint 20 about 2 weeks ago. I was not implying systemd was the problem. I was trying to say that if i could understand how it worked, then i would put something into the shutdown code that ran...

filesystem corruption AGAIN

For the first time since i started using linux (20+ years) i am now getting consistent problems with filesystem corruption. first two times in my /home partition. the next two times in my / partition. the 1st time it happened in my / partition i re-installed, first enabling ahci acess instead of the...

[SOLVED] problems with panda3d dependencies

Something of a PSA. i tried installing panda3d and got a bunch of errors. See the scary list of unmet dependencies below. Notice how 'apt --fix-broken install' is mentioned TWICE, which is unfortunate because 'apt --fix-broken install' doesn't work and given you an error. What did work is sudo apt-g...

Re: what happened to the sound mixer in bottom right ? SOLVED

Well that was tricky. pulseaudio wasn't running. it turns out pulseaudio -vvvvv is your friend. What it told me was that it didn't have access to my home directory. That's weird, so i checked and my home directory had ownership under the wrong UID. This was an artifact of my installation (don't ask)...

what happened to the sound mixer in bottom right ? SOLVED

so i had to upgrade to mint 20 the hard way, installing from scratch (don't ask). now my audio plays on my laptop speakers instead of on the USB speakers. There was a neat little sound control gizmo in the lower right, but i don't see it there. 1 Anybody know what that app is, and why isn't installe...

Re: why isn't /home being unmounted ?

yup. that did it.

I moved my nfs4 mounts to /media which is sitting in the / partition, i.e. separated from the /home partition and now /home is unmounted cleanly.

do i need to generate a new uuid ?

Hi, I had some disk trouble and that caused me to have to do mkfs.ext4 on my /home partition. This of course broke the UUID identification of the partition. I simply updated the /etc/fstab to use /home instead of the UUID, but I just did an update and i saw this scary looking message Processing trig...

Re: why isn't /home being unmounted ?

i don have nfs partitions mounted under /home/nfs4

i'm wondering if that's why /home can't be unmounted.

maybe i should move them to the / partition ?
