Re: When did you start to realize Linux will never become the future of desktop computing?

<snip> Then for what ever reasons, Linux started getting less user-friendly. I now have to figure out missing packages and install them, or find and learn next-level config settings to make things work like they used to. Flatpak and similar bloatware are now getting pushed. Installs now tend to fai...

Re: When did you start to realize Linux will never become the future of desktop computing?

This question is for those of you who honestly thought Linux would be the future of desktop. ... Linux may not be 'the' future of desktop, but it is 'my' future of desktop. I'm done with the spying and/or being force-fed what some corporation marketing types (M$ and Apple), think I want or need. I ...

When did you start to realize Linux will never become the future of desktop computing?

This question is for those of you who honestly thought Linux would be the future of desktop. I was so excited when I tried Linux for the first time in 2016. It made my very old laptops work again and even made them perform faster than Win XP. After using it for 2 years, I noticed improvements in use...

Re: Samsung Strikes Again

I stopped buying anything Samsung when they wanted to charge me more than $100 to fix a $50 blu-ray player which stopped playing blu-ray discs after one of their firmware update. They did not fix it and never compensated me for the defect that they caused. this is also why I am against forced updat...

Re: Windows - what do you use it for?

By the way, TurboTax is not worth getting you stuck with Windows (imho). There are many online tax services which are easier to use, and they are guaranteed up-to-date because computations and workflow are done at the backend. Such as? I am not saying TT is the best, I just have been using it a lon...

Re: Windows - what do you use it for?

I would use Windows again should I go back to photography. Linux does not have an equivalent to Canon's DPP software. I tried Darktable and RawTherapee and found them very difficult to use for simple tasks I easily do using DPP. Converting from RAW format should be a no-brainer. I want my time and e...

Re: rewriting cobol

COBOL is very much alive. Accenture trained an army of younger COBOL programmers some ten years ago. My friend's son is making good money as a COBOL programmer. They get to travel the world (paid for by the company) as part of their job. On the other hand, I believe rewriting COBOL programs to almos...

A good name should be number one inheritance to give your children. Also, good character passed on to your children is something nobody can steal from them.

Can this thing infect a bootable USB drive (e.g. Linux Mint installer)?
Is there a way to make a bootable USB drive to detect and remove this type of malware?
This would make me hesitate to buy a used laptop.

Re: AV/VPN traffic inspection

DoT on system level may get conflict if I VPN to company intranet. So I don't bother managing all that annoyance / exceptions. Turning on DoH in Firefox is easy, with "manage exception" button right on my finger tip. p.s. Also look at how lengthy is your tutorial. Whereas I just need Fire...

Re: Best Buy thinking about no longer selling DVDs

Speaking of blu-ray vs DVD quality...the practical difference depends on the size of the monitor and how far you watch it from. You won't be able to tell the difference when viewing from a 50-inch monitor more than 5 yards away. That's true with respect to resolution, which is why I say that 4K and...

Re: How can beginner Linux Mint users become familiar with advanced terminal utility functions? [Solved]

When I was totally new to Linux, one of the things I started doing is make a compilation of terminal commands where I add new entries every time I learn a new command (set of commands) I find useful for me.

Re: Best Buy thinking about no longer selling DVDs

... It's funny... 20 years ago it was hard to get a laptop with a CD or DVD player/burner. 2023, the problem still exists ;) That's weird...All the laptops I have bought have DVD drive starting from 20 years ago. The most recent one is less than 10 years old. But they are all HP brand laptops (or C...

Re: 21.2 update problems - green screen

The kernel 5.15.0-86 also caused a boot up issue on my laptop running Mint 21.2.
I didn't know what caused the issue at first, and a hard shut-off may have messed up the grub menu. I had to reinstall Linux Mint to make the machine usable again.

Re: Is Mint going to be affected by this?

My understanding is that Cinnamon is a branch of a much earlier version of Gnome, and all its libraries are maintained independently by the Mint team? This is my understanding as well. If this was not true, somebody should stop the misinformation that the Mint Team forked GNOME 3 components to make...
