Re: How To: Persistent Live LMDE USB Install

Hi. I just have a few questions first, to make sure: So, I was reading across some of Debian's Live Manuals, and I'm not sure, but according to the live manual, Squeeze uses the "persistent" flag and a "live-rw" partition, while Wheezy uses "persistence" and any partit...

Re: What are your top tips for a Newbie?

when i was without internet access i found some good dvd's on ebay for cheap (basically cost of dvd+shipping) for example, a 6 dvd set with the entire debian repository; i believe same thing is available for ubuntu beats trying to download at the library and burn it yourself (usually impossible, th...

Re: The unofficial LMDE Xfce UP6 SR1

@ukbrian I like the panel on the right. Have done that myself a time or two. I like mine on top better though. I "stack" my launchers too. Used to use gnome and it took 2 panels to do what I can do with one with Xfce. I am not using any of the added functionality in the 4.10 panel. You don...

Re: The unofficial LMDE Xfce UP6 SR1

Ok. I give in. Relabled the partitions and am going to install Wheezy (that will make 6 installs of that) just to see what it looks like, now, with the full 4.10. All the others just use 4.8 with Thunar 1.6.2. I don't really need the extra stuff on the new panel but this way I have something I can p...

Re: The unofficial LMDE Xfce UP6 SR1

................................ To keep applets orientated to the right of the panel, make sure you have the associated spacer panel plugin properties box 'EXPAND" check box selected. Not sure if this is your issue, but I noticed that if not selected all applets normally on the right migrate ...

Re: The unofficial LMDE Xfce UP6 SR1

Just wanted to jump in and thank you also, GeneC. The no password fix for Synaptic worked on Cinnamon as well. Like you, I don't have to worry about physical pc security so it was silly typing the password any time I wanted to install something. :D All the files there are system files. They don't c...

Re: The unofficial LMDE Xfce UP6 SR1

Hi hushpuppy, welcome to the forums.... :) [*]I'm not sure how to enable gnome-keyring to save me from retyping the password every time I start synaptic. I go right to the source (policy kit). I edit (as root) /usr/share/polkit-1/actions/com.ubuntu.pkexec.synaptic.policy Change Line 14 To: <allow_a...

Re: The unofficial LMDE Xfce UP6 SR1

Redid my drives so had to wait a bit to install. Got it last night though. Ran fine, did every thing I want it to. Use the Foss drivers so have no idea how that works. The screen saver blanking in the Live Session is a bit of a shock. Have had it happen a number of times on a bunch of distros though...

Re: What are your top tips for a Newbie?

For a Newbie, like myself For the first few weeks: 1. Expect it to go pear shaped (wrong) because it will. You learn quickly ... by breaking it 2. Keep notes (written) of all the things that you do and command line tips that you find that work! It's quicker to get back to your last installation fro...

Re: The unofficial LMDE Xfce UP6

I have no idea if it is working or not under Sid, don't have a printer at this time. Thank You widget... I can print I set up with 'hplip-gui' just can't print test page, I can print a random web page (so believe cups printer works). Its the virtual printer 'cups-pdf' that won't install and locks s...

Re: The unofficial LMDE Xfce UP6

So only thing left to try is Mint ISO (I'll try yours) and totally uninstall cups. Then point to testing, reinstall cups. Then see if 'cups-pdf' will install. NOPE configs in /ect & /ect/defaults were completely gone on reboot. Still nogo installing. J.Jay P.S. version same in UPack6 and testin...

Re: What are your top tips for a Newbie?

best thing you can do is get (or check out from library) a book on linux and read it, preferrably one with a disc so you can follow along with your own installation of whatever version they are using as an example in the text just make sure your computer can run whatever they are trying to use; sho...

Re: The unofficial LMDE Xfce UP6

Mp Printing seemed to work... did step outlined above. I then set up printer using 'hplip-gui'. Would print a random FF web page. will N0T print a test page from hp toolkit (can live with that). Tried install (from synaptic) 'cups-pdf' (I use more than I use physical printer)(always install on sys)...

Re: The unofficial LMDE Xfce UP6

Schoelije, Thanks for the quick response. Option 2 (root / schoelje) did the trick. I was able to install my printer at localhost:631. The CUPS test page took a really long time to print (it spent a lot of time "spooling") and trying to print a random page locked up the netbook. I've had ...

Re: And if you could convert 32bit systems to 64bit on the f

That might be fun to try. I have some 32bit installs on my loaner and a drive in another external that I am about to wipe and start over with. May just copy one of those installs over there and give it a whack. Would be great for someone with a 32bit install on a 64bit box that they now know is 64 a...

Re: The unofficial LMDE Xfce UP6

I should add that Plymouth cannot be let run on this box. Before and/or after installation? Live it uses uvesafb (just check /etc/default/grub settings) and after installation it uses drm (the recommended driver). In Debian it is a nice safe stand alone package that nothing depends on. True, you ca...

Re: The unofficial LMDE Xfce UP6

Looking very nice. Booted clean. I should add that Plymouth cannot be let run on this box. Simply dropping "splash" from the instruction string in the menu entry does that fine. If I don't it will take at least 5 minutes for anything to boot and they will usually not shut down at all but s...

Re: The unofficial LMDE Xfce UP6

On the Live Session right now. Install is finishing up.

Live Session looks fine.

This was another LMDE disk that booted correctly. GOOD JOB.

Install seems to work will report in a few minutes.
