very curious. I tried the "lsblk" on the problem pc and it indicated no mount points (booted with live cd) also tried "umount /dev/sda", and it reported "not mounted". will keep researching.... Hmmm, evidently issue has been around a while....this had no resolution. Might have to write this one off....

Just tried running the scenario on linux mint pc #2.

Using same external USB drive, same Mint edition.

Currently backing up using the Gnome Disk>Create Disk Image utility just fine, about 45% complete now.

Will try your suggestions when #2 is complete. Thanks again.

just successfully ran clonezilla. doable, but seems it has a high potential (knowing myself all too well) to screw up. would rather stick to Mint's GUI if at possible. thanks for your efforts...
