Re: Differences in Mint Compared to Ubuntu

Install script for one calls out to the repositories to satisfy it's needs, however I'm wondering if it gets everything and they make assumptions that the user is running the particular OS the software is meant to run on. The project lead wasn't too sure about Mint, though I had run previous version...

Re: Differences in Mint Compared to Ubuntu

Thanks guys. Maybe I'll throw something in a VM and see what happens. Usually the problem is between the monitor and the chair, but I have been pulling my hair out trying to figure out what the heck is going on. I've done more complex installs with no issues, and even build some stuff from source, b...

Re: Differences in Mint Compared to Ubuntu

So that makes me ask the question, is the MInt base an exact clone of Ubuntu with Mint tools, or a "lighter build" of basics with those Mint tools?

Differences in Mint Compared to Ubuntu

Strange question, but is there that much of a significant difference between Mint and Ubuntu where some apps may work for one and not another? I've been trying to add some addons in Blender where the instructions for installation is for Ubuntu, which to me should work, but fails. Files in the correc...

Re: Start-up-time more than fivefold ! Why ?

For me the longest time comes from the NetworkManager-wait-online.service, thinking about disabling. I did disable the service, and where it took me 48sec to userspace from an SSD it now takes 21sec. Systemd reports 860ms total where it once took nearly 21sec before disabling. Maybe something to loo...

Re: New installation looks "washed out"

I would chalk this up to a complete hardware issue. Your card is sending the right info (aside from calibrated info), but as rene said earlier, it may be just a backlight issue. Now you could go the full route of calibrating your monitor by using DisplayCal, or you can adjust things perceptually by ...

Re: Some Newbie Questions

Just like AndyMH has said, you will have to shrink the partition for Windows and it does take up space inefficiently, so the longer you've been running Windows, the less space you will have for partitioning. I do the shrinking and setting up of partitions on the Windows side first, and is recommend ...

Re: First post - Warranty voided if Mint installed on new laptop?

Also in your case, buying a used laptop doesn't give you a warranty, so in that sense you kind of make it sound like a non-issue. Unless you're thinking along the lines of, buy expensive and protect my investment, or buy cheap and "disposable".

Re: Why do I have 24 processes `cinnamon --replace` running?

Maybe these are just threads, but don't have anywhere near that with xfce. I guess nothing to worry about.

Why do I have 24 processes `cinnamon --replace` running?

Running Cinnamon on Mint 19.1, is it normal to have 24 cinnamon --replace processes running? I thought these processes were for when cinnamon has to restart for some reason, and I have been experiencing some small response glitches from time to time. I have xfce on my older than dirt laptop, but hav...

Re: Stuck at this point

Set your first boot device as the USB port that you are using with the Mint image on it. The system will boot a live preview of Mint, on the desktop there is an icon that you double click to install Linux Mint. Now the most important question is how are you planning on using Mint? Are you going to u...

Re: Linux Mint or LMDE

Thanks for the replies. Just a little worried about maintaining my needs should the move need to happen. I require proprietary drivers, OpenCL and CUDA libraries, restricted codecs and so on, which is easy enough to get with LM 19.1, but I'm not quite comfortable with "taking a step back" with Debia...

Linux Mint or LMDE

I have been using Mint exclusively for a year now and love it, but recently have learned that Ubuntu is planning on going with snaps more and might forego apt all together. Will this affect Mint, if so, is it time to move to LMDE? I get the feeling LMDE isn't quite as easy, or I will end up with a b...

Re: Why doesnt space bar work on browsers?

Are these other websites related to video streaming? In many cases these sites use the space bar to play and pause the video, so maybe it has something to do with that. Just throwing it out there. Behaviour is the same in Firefox and Chromium.

Re: Stuck on Logo during Shutdown or Reboot

There is a current issue where in some cases there is a driver mismatch. The kernel is expecting 415.23 but the driver listed is 415.25. Check this post for details https://devtalk.nvidia.com/default/topic/1045392/black-screen-nvidia-driver-415-23-on-linux-4-20-rc-/ Everything is running fine on my ...

Re: FreeCAD For Machinery and Shop Equipment [SOLVED]

I have used Onshape as well. Runs in a browser and is cloud based so completely cross platform. Chromium works better here, but you can use Firefox. With more complex objects I have found the former to be better. You can check it out here https://www.onshape.com/ Free for personal work, but your fil...

Re: Losing OpenCL device on Suspend

Been a while since I posted this, but I'm bumping it since I am still dealing with the issue and I have not found any solutions online anywhere. While using Blender, and any render engine that tries to find and OpenCL or CUDA device, and the system suspends, on wake my nVidia GTX 970 can't be found....

Mounting Devices Automatically

I have been having an issue where my secondary HDD isn't being mounted so that software can see it. I checked a box to mount removable devices on startup, so instead of Nemo showing that the device has not been mounted yet and I have to do it myself, it shows the unmount icon after it, (not sure why...

Re: Screen glitching to desktop wallpaper when recording or screen sharing

In the OpenGL section of the nVidia X Server Settings, you may have to disable "Allow flipping". It's worth a shot. Simple Screen Recorder warns the user that this may happen and offers to disable it permanently or per session.
