Linux Mint 18.3 meltdown on laptop

I'm using a Dell XPS 9550 with Linux Mint 18.3 (KDE Edition) and I can't log in to my machine. It's worked fine for months. When I try and login I get "Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not logged out yourself, this could mean that there is some installation problem or that ...

Re: Kleopatra appears to start but then disappears

So to answer some of the questions... I uninstalled using the Software Manager. I've also tried the purge and reinstall exactly as suggested. And I have the same result. One other thing I tried was to right click on the Kleopatra icon in the menu. It then gives me an error in a pop up box that says:...

Re: Kleopatra appears to start but then disappears

Thanks. Now I have a worse problem. I can't log in to my machine. And the login screen is different. I've never had such a thing happen. It's rather scary. When I try and login I get "Your session only lasted less than 10 seconds. If you have not logged out yourself, this could mean that there is so...

Re: Kleopatra appears to start but then disappears

When trying to launch kleopatra from the command line nothing at all happens. There's no error messages displayed in the terminal. The Kleopatra icon doesn't even appear then disappear. All that happens is the prompt is returned. Running echo $? returns 0. Also, I should mention that I've used Kleop...

Kleopatra appears to start but then disappears

So the problem is that when Kleopatra is started it just disappears. I can see the icon in the system tray for a second, but then it's gone. I've tried watching it launch from KSysGuard and there's nothing I can distinguish. I've also tried removing it and reinstalling. I've done this twice. How sho...

being undiscoverable on public wifi

I'm coming from Windows 10 and there's a setting in the Network Manager for making your computer undiscoverable by the network its on.
(I believe discoverable for Public WiFi was the default.) What's the analogous thing to do for my Mint Laptop?
I'm using Mint 18.3 KDE Edition 64-bit.

Re: Can anyone recommend software for removing metadata?

Thank very much for all those answers! It looks like the MAT package is out of date: https://packages.qa.debian.org/m/mat.html I was unable to find "Xnviewmp" using Software Manager. I'll see if I can put together a tutorial on removing metadata as I work through the available options. Thanks again.

Can anyone recommend software for removing metadata? [solved]

In checking with search engines and also using Software Manager, I've come across MAT (Metadata Anonymisation Toolkit). Unfortunately it's a package that's broken.
Does anyone have any recommendations regarding software that's good at removing (and viewing) metadata?

Re: There are 2 files but yet there are 40 files. (And other file syncing questions.)

Thank you. So one thing I immediately notice is that with the -h flag there's a K after the number. I though it was a count of how many files are there but you're right, it's for the size of the directory.

There are 2 files but yet there are 40 files. (And other file syncing questions.)

I'm using a file syncing service called SpiderOak and it constantly has issues with syncing certain kinds of files. One example of "a bad choice to backup" are KeePassX database files. I assume it's the lock files that are the problem. When I was taking a look at the directory in which I store my Ke...

MAT (Metadata Anonymisation Toolkit) installs but fails to launch: Is it broken?

I'm looking for software that can remove metadata from all kinds of files. It looks like MAT (Metadata Anonymisation Toolkit) is what I'm looking for. When I used Software Manager to install it there's a couple of python dependencies that I also installed. The install process appeared error free. Wh...

Re: Encrypted USB 2TB Portable SSD is invisible to Dolphin - How to reformat it?

So I don't have "Disks" but when I use Krunner and type "disks" it shows me KDE Partition Manager.
To reformat the drive I used the KDE Partition Manager. Now when I plug the drive in it's immediately recognized by dolphin.
Thanks.

Re: Encrypted USB 2TB Portable SSD is invisible to Dolphin - How to reformat it?

Ok so I've got open the KDE Partition Manager. I hope this is what's meant by
Disk tools in the Mint Menu
and when I refresh devices it sees
/dev/sdb (Dell Portable, 1.8TiB)
So that's good. I'll have to figure out how to use this Partition Manager. (Am I on the right track?)

Encrypted USB 2TB Portable SSD is invisible to Dolphin - How to reformat it?

I've got a 2TB Dell Portable USB SSD that I encrypted using BitLocker (Windows 10 encryption). My goal is to reformat it and use it with my new Linux Mint setup. There's nothing important on it. When I place a 15GB USB stick in a USB port, dolphin recognized it and I've successfully reformatted one ...

How should I encrypt /home after install?

I installed Linux Mint 18.3 a few weeks ago and I skipped the encrypt /home check box. What I'm wondering is: How to encrypt it now? I'm far from knowing much about encryption but aren't there a number of ways it can be done? Which way would be comparable to how its done by the installer? File encry...

Re: Keyboard shortcut for launching Dolphin?

Thank you. Success. Here's the solution to opening Dolphin with the traditional Windows File Explorer shortcut of Super + e (or the shortcut combination of your choice). Instructions: Open the KDE Menu Editor which can be done from the terminal by typing kmenuedit and hitting Enter. In the tree menu...

Re: Keyboard shortcut for launching Dolphin?

Thanks you. (I didn't think to look in the Ubuntu forums.) From the date it appears that solution is about 3 years ago. It looks like the solution was to change a setting in the KDE Menu Editor. I can't find the KDE Menu Editor. Alt-Space and typing KDE Menu Editor doesn't result in anything. And se...

Keyboard shortcut for launching Dolphin?

I'm coming from Windows 10 and one feature I enjoyed was the ability to open the file explorer using Super + e. What I'm wondering is how do I set up a similar keyboard short cut for launching Dolphin? I've been reading KHelpCenter documentation. There's a section called Filemanager Settings Modules...
