Re: File transfer hangs for a long time before finishing

The way I see it, the problem of the original poster (and for me) is actually three problems: 1) Stupid implementation of write-cache for removable usb drives . Writing buffers are useful for hard disks, but it's a completely stupid thing to have for usb flash drives. It offers nothing in terms of a...

Re: File transfer hangs for a long time before finishing

Midnight commander has trouble too. It starts really fast, then slows down to 1 MB/s and takes hours to copy just 5 GB. The same thing happens with both my usb drives. It's clearly a problem of how linux handles the flash drives, I remember I had this problem again many years ago. With Mint 19.3 the...

Re: File transfer hangs for a long time before finishing

Double commander does exactly the same, and it has its own interface. I haven't tried XFE, MC or cp command yet. I may try them some time - but I'm interested in a solution, and using another file manager than the system's default is not really a solution, is it. Now I have disabled the vm.dirty_byt...

Re: File transfer hangs for a long time before finishing

this bug has been around since forever. I'm surprised that nobody has a real solution yet. No, it's not a matter of cache memory being used for writing, or inaccurate progress bar. Copying freezes (and not necessarily at 99%, but also at 10%). Freezes means I waited for it to finish a long time -I l...

Re: Is it possible to completely remove Nemo as a file manager?

Problem identified: it was a hardware issue. Disk died on me yesterday afternoon, taking a good load of non backed-up data with it. This answers my #2 and #3 problems above. Problem #1 was fixed by resetting the icon grid sliders to their default values and not touching them again. Problem #4 is no ...

Re: Computer slowness (often experienced when waiting for a folder to open)

For me it's confirmed: it was a hardware issue. Disk died on me yesterday afternoon, taking a good load of non backed-up data with it. Checking it with smartmontools is no longer possible, the system now doesn't even boot with the disk connected.
Perhaps the OP should also be alerted

Re: Desktop icons unpredictably stacking on top of one another on the top left corner of the screen

I think I have found a trail: All this time I had the horizontal and vertical desktop icon grid spacing adjusted , to make the icons a little denser, through the correspondent sliders. Problem kept on and on, appearing even more often than initially, about once a day, no matter what I did. Until I s...

Re: Computer slowness (often experienced when waiting for a folder to open)

I removed all 5 hard disks I have on the system, leaving only the filesystem one. Everything was lightning fast, the system was responsive like I had never seen before. Then I turned off the pc and started connecting disks one by one and testing system responsiveness. Everything goes to hell when I ...

Re: Can't boot up Linux after installation dual boot

Okay. Sorry about that. It appears that you're not alone in being stumped by the Acer BIOS making it more difficult to change their default "RST Premium with Optane" setting to AHCI. Possible solution here . Not entirely the OEM's fault. Both Intel and Microsoft are constantly pressuring all OEMs t...

Re: Is it possible to completely remove Nemo as a file manager?

Nemo sure gets mentioned a lot in this forum. Rather than remove nemo*, how about installing another file-browser (pcmanfm, xfe, double-commander) and ignoring nemo as much as possible ? *FWIW, I think it's a rather strange design, to be nice about it, that desktop window/management depends on, or ...

Re: LiveUSB freezes during installation

I once had a similar problem, couldn't for the life of me find out what happened: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=58&t=310541&p=1751157#p1751157 It turned out something was wrong with my iso image, but the burn tool didn't complain the slightest. Redownloading the image and burning it a...

Re: Is it possible to completely remove Nemo as a file manager?

thank you everyone for your answers. It's not a single problem, it's a bunch of problems, bugs and glitches, that have made me regret my upgrade to mint 19.3: 1) It's this stacked icons mess: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?f=208&t=318626&p=1805944#p1805944 2) It's this random slowness wh...

Re: Computer slowness (often experienced when waiting for a folder to open)

It happens even in folders with very few files, or in folders with no thumbnail-compatible files. It also happens in folders which previously - just a view moments ago - opened instantly. In this animated gif I show you what's happening: https://i.postimg.cc/XXC2wBDd/delay-opening-folders.gif Folder...

Is it possible to completely remove Nemo as a file manager? [SOLVED]

Can it be done? Can I remove Nemo as a default file manager and replace it with, say, Nautilus or any other that can run with Cinnamon? Which would you suggest? Too many problems that seem Nemo-related with Mint 19.3, I just want to try my luck with another file manager. Is it possible? Or will I ru...

Re: Computer slowness (often experienced when waiting for a folder to open)

I have the same issue with Mint 19.3. Didn't happen with Mint 18. Clicking on a folder sometimes (randomly) takes 3-4 seconds to open. Clicking the same or another folder again will never delay again, it will be instant. But it will delay again after some time (probably an hour or so). Sometimes cli...

Re: Desktop icons unpredictably stacking on top of one another on the top left corner of the screen

Unfortunately the problem persists. After countless hours of online searching, not a single soul has a definitive answer as to the cause of the problem. It seems that something goes wrong with the icon position metadata somewhere in ~/.local/share/gvfs-metadata (but not all of them are saved there),...

Re: Desktop icons unpredictably stacking on top of one another on the top left corner of the screen

Thank you all for your replies. As I wrote above, I know I can auto-arrange the icons, that's not what I want. I want my icons to be where I want them to. It wasn't happening in my previous distro... Here are some other users with the same problem 8 years ago (also without a solution). https://www.r...

Desktop icons unpredictably stacking on top of one another on the top left corner of the screen

Hi everyone I've been having this extremely annoying issue ever since I upgraded from Linux Mint 18 to 19.3. All of a sudden, without any apparent reason, all desktop icons, except for the home / mounted drives icons, stack to the top left of the screen, on the same spot, i.e. they occupy the same s...

Re: Windows 10 usb drive - all but impossible [SOLVED]

guys thanks for the answers. Re-downloading the image solved the problem. Strange, as I used the same image about a month ago to make a dual boot setup on my laptop without problems. Perhaps it somehow got corrupt on the hard disk, who knows? I am leaving this post here for future peoples' searches....
