thank you to those that offered help. i think i have worked out what was causing the desktop on my second monitor to freeze. i slowly changed some of the settings back to the out-of-the-box defaults and after changing the alt-tab options from from 3D to icons/text it seems to have stopped happening....

Have you loaded the nVidia drivers or are you using the default drivers from the boot disk? Select <Menu><Administration><Driver Manager> Are there any drivers listed there as requiring installation?
