Re: Shutdown vs Suspend

Out of curiosity, decided to measure power consumption during suspend. Two simple consumer meters, so not super precise. One said 0.4 watts, the other 0.58. Call it half a watt. So, if you suspend a machine for 12 hours, that's equivalent to burning a 60 watt light bulb for six minutes. Big whoop. ...

Re: Shutdown vs Suspend

Computers and other electronic devices can "possibly" generate a saving if turned off. If, OTOH, you are running electric motors then the startup current may well negate any savings you have made by turning it off. A little (un)common sense may need to be applied here. I absolutely agree with you, ...

Minuscule compared to what? A refrigerator? An air conditioner?
Or both, but thats not the point here. Talking more on the basis of performance

Re: Shutdown vs Suspend

The point isnt that, the point is, it uses minuscule power Huh, a laptop uses minuscule power? Ever tried running one without a power cord? See how fast it runs out, check the capacity of your battery and you'll know exactly how much it uses. Not an amount I'd call minuscule. But certainly, there's...

Re: Shutdown vs Suspend

Come on guys, we use way more energy on other daily appliances, and a laptop is the least power hungry among the rest, moreover it mostly runs on battery. And batteries are charged with what exactly? (Well, mine is charged with solar power, but you get the point.) The point isnt that, the po...

Re: Shutdown vs Suspend

I use suspend a lot, sometimes for months. You do need good RAM that won't get "leaks". No, I'm not still using mint 16, just have upgraded constantly since then without changing profile name. 127days-uptime.png Well, 127 days is a very long time, i was thinking weeks. Nevertheless on the RAM point...

Re: Shutdown vs Suspend

All very valid points, except for the environmental one. Come on guys, we use way more energy on other daily appliances, and a laptop is the least power hungry among the rest, moreover it mostly runs on battery.

just let it's power saving goto an suspend, if just walking away, for a while,
& otherwise do use the shut-down / power off, when going out / end of evening time.
Thank you for the suggestion :)

Re: Shutdown vs Suspend

Having used PCs since the 1980s and Ubuntu / Mint since 10.04, and read up about it, frequent shutting down and rebooting is a) healthy refreshment for any operating system, especially after system or large software updates, and b) does no harm to hardware. All my current PCs have lasted nearly a d...

Re: Shutdown vs Suspend

On my laptop, closing the lid does it, but no harm in having an option.

Shutdown vs Suspend

Just out of curiosity, Do you shut down your PC between uses? Or just leave it running all the time? Or maybe restart every few days? I know there is a long standing debate on this topic, but just wanted to get the views of the Linux Mint community, as there seems to be no specific need to restart t...

Yes removed it and updated cache, it does just fine. Just wasn't sure if doing so wouldn't end up breaking something. Thank you

Re: User Account

Firstly thanks for replying. I simply created a new account from going to settings and then to users and groups. From there created the new account and made it a standard account and set a new password for the account. Now i was hoping when i log out of this account(administrator) and log in to the ...

User Account

I am trying to create a new user, which i did and setup a standard user, only to find out that user has access to every thing I have as an administrator, so much so, the user can even change my password. I want to be able to give the user limited access to programs and my files, and particularly mak...
