How to configure Linux Mint 18.3 as a server

I'll be getting a new laptop for my main system as well as gaming and gamedev (Lenovo Ideapad L340 Thin 2020 with 9th Gen Intel Hexa-Core i7-9750H and 4GB GDDR5 NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650 - I mention that in case someone here has any experience loading Linux on that system and can give me some pointers...

Re: Up-to-date alternative repository?

UPDATE: Never mind for my questions. It seems that Claws Mail is not anywhere near as good as recent reviews say it is. The "Spam" button is greyed out; when creating spam filters, you only get one rule; filters, when created for spam, don't run unless you manually run them, and that's just what I'v...

[SOLVED] Re: pulseaudio keeps maxing out volume w/o permission

I'm using the one with the same icon as the Sound section in the main settings app. And, I found (in my ~/systems directory) a backup of the configuation when it was all working ... one I'd forgotten I had. Things are a LOT better now. Normalization is even working. I was going to post a copy of the...

Re: pulseaudio keeps maxing out volume w/o permission

I'll try to get all of this in one post. First, which pulse audio volume control? I have two on my system---I use the one that has an icon that looks kind of like a speaker. Is the other one better? Second, as for normalizing volume, I had that working (don't know why it suddenly started working), t...

pulseaudio keeps maxing out volume w/o permission

How do I configure pulseaudio to use the volume levels I set, no exceptions, no changing them on its own...ever...? It's incredibly annoying when I have some symphonic metal going for background music, while trying to get some work done here at home (I work from home), and the next thing I know, the...

Re: how do I configure email for internal system use

New developement ... as root, I ran the following: # apt remove postfix # apt remove sendmail # apt install sendmail Then I tried a test message: # /usr/bin/mail -s test jim < ~/.zshrc # sendmail: error while loading shared libraries: libpostfix-global.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such f...

Re: how do I configure email for internal system use

OT: There's also .zshrc, and I have a .zopts for the options settings, plus an old .zsysdep file from long ago. And I highly recommend zsh, too. It's got a LOT of power beyond that of sh and bash ... kind of like comparing the old vi to vim / gvim (that's for comparing zsh to sh ... not to bash, tha...

Re: how do I configure email for internal system use

Not that I've ever heard of. This would be something like: # mail -s test jim < ~/.zprofile Really simple. Problem is, it's not working. That's the kind of thing that's supposed to be working out of the box on any Unix variant. So much relies on it, such as (again) root, using "calendar -" from its ...

how do I configure email for internal system use [SOLVED]

I'm not getting calendar email from root's crontab (calendar -) or my own (calendar) right now because email isn't working. I schedule some very important medical stuff via my calendar, so I need this working yesterday, or sooner, if possible (no telling what I've missed). I currently have Postfix i...

Re: how do I configure linux mint 18.3 to show full details during boot

Thanks. I gather nano is a text editor ... but I use vim and gvim.... It'll be nice to know what's going on and, if there's a problem, see it.
The logo looks fine, but it's not really very informative, except for telling me that I'm booting Linux Mint, which I already know. :-)

how do I configure linux mint 18.3 to show full details during boot

Simple enough question: how do I configure my system to always show the full details during start-up instead of the Linux Mint logo? I'm not looking for keys to press every time, but rather, configuring the system itself (probably the boot manager) to always show the details on every start-up from t...

how to configure postfix for internal email (e.g., for root running calendar -)

This should be a simple enough question. I installed postfix, and using the installation menu, set it for internal email only. The problem is, it's not working. I start postfix, and try a test message from root to me. The problem is, all of the test messages are stuck in the queue. So I do (as root)...

Re: how to get ftpd or vsftpd running and accepting local connections ... and a few more questions

Ok, never mind about ftpd ... I got it working once I got rid of vsftpd. This time, however, I put a copy of my revised rc.local in my ~/systems directory. Still looking for help with internal email, etc.

how to get ftpd or vsftpd running and accepting local connections ... and a few more questions

I'm embarrased to admit this, but after a crash and forced reload of Linux Mint 18.whatever, I feel like a complete Unix/BSD4.2 newbie (thus also a Linux Mint newbie). It's been so long since I've seen a system without a working ftpd that I've forgotten how to set it up. I have both ftpd and vsftpd....

Can anyone here help me get these critical issues fixed? Or should I just uninstall Waterfowl
and stick with my old version of Firefox?

Waterfox problems with themes, bookmarks toolbar, customizing, and probably more....

I realized how long it has been since I tried waterfox ... I still had my Mac at that time.... I have, however, run into a problem with themes. Every theme from my Firefox installation failed to transfer over, so I'm loading them all, one at a time. But, they're not being applied. When I reload the ...

Re: Firefox upgrade?

I tried Waterfox. Frankly, it left a lot to be desired. I'll check it out again, though, to see if it's
been improved since the early version I was testing.

Re: Firefox upgrade?

" All supported versions of Mint are now using FF version 65.01 from the Ubuntu repositories, so I wonder if you are currently using an old unsupported version of Mint." Not mine, I'm at 52.0 (64 bit). After that version, its devs decided to break all of the plugins and extensions that were so amazi...
