Re: boot error - cannot startup
Hey Hoppetossa, Unfortunately from memory I couldn't fix the issue and had to move to data recovery. Which is straight forward if you have recent backups. In my case I had to recover files the hard way. Fortunately, I summarised it in the linked HOW TO post: https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.ph...

Re: Filesystems: convert Ext4 => BTRFS
Thanks ajgringo619, I also forgot to add this link that breaks down performance and stability which I thought was useful and a good way of looking at the fs: https://btrfs.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Status BTW, Have you had any experience or comments on F2FS? I thought its results were interesting in...

[solved] Best practise back up - Gnome Disks
to close this out, in the end I decided not to do a full .iso type image backup. Gnome Disks is ok for partitions but perhaps not the complete HDD? The primary issue is that the file size would be very large and the benefit limited. Instead I will go for at least a two part backup system: 1) Timeshi...

[solved] Filesystems: convert Ext4 => BTRFS
Ok, to close this out it looks like I would need to do a fresh install to a new filesystem like BTRFS. The following link benchmarks filesystems: Btrfs vs. EXT4 vs. F2FS vs. XFS https://www.phoronix.com/scan.php?page=article&item=linux-50-filesystems&num=1 Thank you to everyone for offering ...

Re: Filesystems: convert Ext4 => BTRFS
Hi Flemur,
My ESP is indeed Fat32. Do you not share the other views that BTRFS should be avoided in favour of ext4? I had read that it was maturing as a technology and could deliver better performance from the SDD.

Filesystems: convert Ext4 => BTRFS
Hi!
How would one convert, if its possible, an existing installation from the Ext4 filesystem (disk partitions: ESP, root, and home) to BTRFS without corrupting the installation in the process?
The reason is that I have read that BTRFS is a good filesystem for SSDs
Thank you!

Its been a painful experience but at least the post documents a possible solution. In the future, I think I'll stick to veracrypt!

Re: How to recover files from encrypted disk?
ok, I have managed to obtain access to my data again. The key was to recover and use the mount passphrase (not the login passphrase) ]and then ecryptfs was successfully mounted. The only issue I have now is that the internal and external hard drives cannot be reached so I am unable to move the files...

Re: How to recover files from encrypted disk?
hi xenopeek,
Unfortunately, I can't see the option "open as administrator" you mention in the file menu of the file manager (nemo) - unable to take screenshot to confirm I'm in the right place. (i do have an option to open as root by right clicking - the elevated privileges don't help)

Re: How to recover files from encrypted disk?
Thank you for your advice. I have taken manual backups to an external drive - although i need to increase the frequency in hindsight. Also, I have Timeshift taking automatic backups on a daily basis - although this time it hasn't worked. But, veracrypt does seem a better solution in the future!
