Re: Cat6a blowing modems?

Thanks all for the input and feedback. New cables and modem are on the way. Will look into getting a UPS for that area as a buffer to future problems. With regard to the UPS, I should have mentioned that it would be preferable to get one that produces a true sine wave and tightly maintains voltage ...

Re: Ethernet adapter disconnected & speed up & down

No I have not tried replacing the cable. It goes through walls from the second floor to the basement so practical considerations make that very difficult at best; it is one cable from the modem to computer, no wall plugs or anything else. Since unplugging and plugging in the cable fixes the problem ...

Re: Cat6a blowing modems?

Sizzle from electronics is never good. Check the circuit but do so by trying something simple first: plug in a light or a radio you do not care about into that wall socket. If they don't sizzle, check voltage with a VOM and if it is OK see and if it fluctuates. I hesitate to say check out the fuse/b...

Re: Cat6a blowing modems?

Is it possible? Well, anything is possible but assuming that the manufacturer adhered to the standards and the cables are straight through [as opposed to crossover] cables there is no reason that they should have caused the issues. CAT 6 just has more stringent specs, shielding than CAT 5. https://e...

Re: A huge problem with Gigabyte GA-970A-DSP3 motherboard

Thanks for the suggestions ClixTrix. It turns out that this MB is very picky about RAM. I took out a third set of RAM [GSkill] from a working machine with a Gigabyte board. When i put them into this board the problems suddenly disappeared. Frustrating and took a ton of time but I finally stumbled on...

Ethernet adapter disconnected & speed up & down

I have a vexing problem with the onboard network adapter on my Gigabyte 890GPA-UDH3 motherboard. Mint 18.3 When I boot up, I get the message that the Ethernet cable is disconnected; it is not. If I pretend I have patience, after some time it will spontaneously put up a message that the cable is conn...

Re: A huge problem with Gigabyte GA-970A-DSP3 motherboard

Thanks for the suggestions ClixTrix. I have tried all combinations of RAM slots with both sets of RAM. I have never filled all 4 slots and never mixed the two brands. I thought that might introduce more issues. One stick or two in slots 1 & 3 or 2 & 4 or permutations thereof affected nothing. You ar...

Re: A huge problem with Gigabyte GA-970A-DSP3 motherboard

Thanks for your reply depakdeshp. I am pretty sure it is hardware too. That is why I have been eliminating everything that does not need to be attached to the computer and swapping out the minimal components that are still attached. The computer is completely clean given that I have taken out the mo...

**SOLVED** A huge problem with Gigabyte GA-970A-DSP3 motherboard

I have been trying to fix a friend’s computer for some time and keep running into the same problem. Basically it will not boot properly the first time you try after it has been off for about 6+ hours; less than that and it boots properly. When the first boot fails, turning off the power switch at th...

Re: How to uninstall Kernel update

My question: how do I uninstall 36 so I do not have to use 'advanced options' in the boot menu to tell the system to boot from 34? It appears the system boots from the latest Kernel that is installed. Boot into a kernel that is not the one you want to uninstall, then Update Manager > View menu > Li...

SOLVED How to uninstall Kernel update

Background. Mint 18.3 with all the latest updates. AMD X6 1090T. Dual boot Windows 7 and Mint. Everything worked fine until I installed Kernel 4.15.0.36. When I restarted the computer the next day, I got a black screen that said [more or less] uncompression error system halted. I checked the forum a...

Re: How to tell Mint to use an installed proprietary driver for printer??

I had posted this question in the printers forum and got the instructions below which are what I followed. The difference between them [aside for elegance] is that Pjotr is that his tips say that there may be some preferences to set (I was not offered any), and that if the regular installation did n...

Re: How to tell Minbt to use an installed proprietary driver for printer??

Thanks Pjotr. I read that page but it was about installing the Samsung driver. I already did that and it supposedly installed successfully .

For some reason, Mint is not recognizing and using the Samsung driver.

Is there a way to tell Mint to use that driver??

How to tell Mint to use an installed proprietary driver for printer??

I have a Samsung C460FW and the ADF part of the scanner did not work properly. SimpleScan told me to install Samsung's driver and I did so. The scanner still did not work right. Driver manager still said 'no proprietary drivers in use" despite my having installed the Samsung driver and rebooting Min...

Re: A driver for Samsung Xpress C460FW??

It occurred to me that as a Linux newbee, I might be asking the wrong question. I cannot figure out why Mint says there are no proprietary drivers in use even after I installed the Samsung driver.....and rebooted Mint just to see if that made any difference. It did not. Is there a way in Mint to tel...

Re: A driver for Samsung Xpress C460FW??

Thanks for the help pdc_2. Your instructions worked perfectly and the installation said it completed. Unfortunately I still have the same scanning problem: SimpleScan scans the first page and then pulls the other pages through one after the other but only the first one actually scans. And I have to ...

A driver for Samsung Xpress C460FW??

I used to be able to use SimpleScan without any problems. But a few updates to Mint later that changed. Printing still works fine but scanning is wonky. If the printer is powered up when I start SimpleScan, SimpleScan immediately shuts down but reappears and stays when I restart it. Odd I thought. B...
