Update Manager "debconf error"

Linux Mint 18.3 Cinnamon x64 I recently made a minor change (In synaptic preferences, I think? ) to keep the update dialogue window open when Update Manager is working. A couple of times now I've noticed it opening with: debconf: unable to initialise frontend: Dialog debconf: (TERM is not set, so th...

Re: Best way to auto-run a cmd in term @ root login?

Thanks.

Not quite what I thought I was looking for, but is certainly simple and serves the same purpose admirably. :)

Best way to auto-run a cmd in term @ root login? [solved]

LM 18.3 Cinnamon x64 What I'd like to do is, whenever I log in to the admin account, display the results of cat /proc/mdstat in a terminal automatically. Just a quick'n'easy way to check the status of my RAIDs. Then I can close the terminal and move on to what I logged in for. But the more I've thou...

Re: NVidia Gfx Card recommendations?

Thanks fellas! 'Twas a seemingly naive question, I know. The main reason I asked here rather than just googling NVidia for myself, was in case there were any known 'problem card families' under Linux; most 'net reviews assume the OS is Win. My last few Radeons performed admirably under Win, receivin...

NVidia Gfx Card recommendations?

LM 18.3 Cinnamon x64 It's time for me to look for a new gfx card. I've been a Radeon fanboi for enough years now that I've no clue whats available on the dark (NVidia) side, but I've had a gutful of the driver problems inherent to running Radeons under any flavour of Linux.. So I'm looking for recom...

Re: Changing where Software Manager installs files?

Yeah, the OS itself really doesn't take up that much space. You're quite correct that Steam will quickly chew up what space is left. But, existing conditions aside, I suspect that the simplest solution for you would be to mount the 4TB hdd as /home. Then, rebooting from LiveUSB, move the existing /h...

Re: Icons in the Start menu

RMB on 'Menu' logo, select 'configure.' In window that opens, select 'Menu' tab and 'Open the Menu Editor' option. Navigate to the relevant file, highlight and select 'Properties' then in the subsequent detail window LMB on the image of the icon; this should open up a selector. Works for me in LM18....

Re: Possible to customise Update Mgr?

You don't even need to pull it since it's just python scripts. But us being lazy, too, that's all we'll tell you. :P :) Touché What a lovely way to kill some time... wading through .py's. I haven't come any closer to working it out, but at least I know where to look now; I hadn't realised th...

Possible to customise Update Mgr? [solved]

LM 18.3 Cinnamon x64 When Update Mgr pops open it's sub-window to DL and install pkgs, it shows 'Details' links to expand the amount of info shown. For various reasons I always expand these windows for monitoring. This means I need to expand the window once during DLs, then again when it runs dpkg. ...

Confusion with passwords & updates.

Recently a friend brought me her laptop, LM18.3 Cinnamon, as she'd forgotten her password. I reset it through /bin/bash in the grub menu and all seemed well. Except... she cannot su to root, it rejects her password. sudo works. Using sudo on her account I created a 2nd account for myself and added i...

KeyCmd to switch between fullscreen app and desktop?

LM18.3 Cinnamon X64 Is there any key combination which will switch from a full-screen application, such as a game, back to the cinnamon desktop? I don't think so, but I'm far from being a guru on these matters. I've been playing a game (natively) which will only run in fullscreen mode and relies on ...

Re: How to RESTORE ROOT PERMISSIONS on my User?

Try it the 2nd way administrollaattori suggested. That puts you straight in as root, not your user, so should work without permission issues. ie. Reboot into the grub screen (you may need to hold down shift while booting) and press E when at the selection list. Find the line that starts with "linux ...

Re: LinuxMint can't mount hard drive, can't install. Possibly bad superblock.

I'd use smart-tools to inspect the HDD's S.M.A.R.T. info. Given your description, I'd boot into liveusb and use SW Manager to install smartmontools ... and maybe gsmartcontrol if I wanted a GUI. Suspend & re-open so you can see the HDD, and depending on what you installed either: - run gsmartcontrol...

Re: The pitfalls of sharing '/home' partition in multi-boot

What, exactly, do you want to share between the distros? If it's only the data dirs such as ~/downloads, ~/music, etc., you can accomplish this fairly simply by mounting common, shared dirs to these folders in each distros /home. eg. setup each distro with /home on their /root partition, so that eac...

Fixing passwd mismatch: login & keyring? [Solved]

Sorry... I know I've seen this covered elsewhere in these forums, but I just can't find the relevant posts. :( A friend forgot their laptop's su login password and knowing that I'm also running the same OS - LM18.3 Cinnamon - asked me for help. I simply edited the grub boot to bring up bash so I cou...

taskset cmd - interpreting the man pages [Solved]

man taskset refers specifically to CPUs & processors, which is rather vague in terms of modern CPUs. By 'CPU' does it mean node, socket or core? At first glance I would assume it means socket, but... Similarly, what is meant by 'processor?' I have an old SQL database which ran perfectly fin...
