Re: Is Linux Mint ugly?

whether it is "ugly" depends on the user's choice of theme amd DE, i have a custom theme that is meant to be black/grey with cinnamon (removed all the green) and is a modified version of Mint Y combined with a modified version of CBlack, which in my opinion, looks perfect. i am not a fan of the stoc...

Re: Heat/Freq Tools?

as far as i know, there are no tools for this preinstalled with tara, but i would highly reccomend installing conky (when set to panel mode, will display on top of most applications), makes a great OSD for checking that kinda stuff and is highly customizable

i have a Corsair HS60 Headset with the virtual surround USB DAC. however, it seems like surround sound is not enabled unless you use corsair's CUE software, which is not available for linux. is there a way to enable the headset's virtual surround in linux? since i have not found any documentation of...

- the Timeshift program would backup the system or / root files
- the Mint Backup program would backup the user or /home files

whereas Grsync could be configured to both.
you can configure Timeshift to back up your /home directory in the settings

Re: Are Linux distributions really so different from one another?

if you compare something like mint, ubuntu, and debian, they are going to be similar, however, if you compare mint to something else, like manjaro or arch, for example, much of the software isnt remotely cross-compatible and the distros are very different.

i heard updated (manually installed) drivers on linux can increase performance by a significant amount (i haven't tested)
You heard correctly, but to get full power out of a decent nVidia card requires xorg.conf additions.
what additions were you referring to that would increase performance?

what graphics driver is being used for each installation? because non-nvidia (noveau) graphics drivers can have pretty bad performance on nvidia cards and i heard updated (manually installed) drivers on linux can increase performance by a significant amount (i haven't tested)

Re: Can't stop Mint 19 mounting unwanted partitions at boot

if you are using cinnamon, you should be able to edit the mount options from the "disks" app

to do this, open disks, type in your root password, go to one of the partitions you want to stop from mounting, and untick the option for it to mount on startup

Re: very low fps cs go nvidia gt 740m

please follow phd21's suggestion and post system information, and a screenshot from your CS:GO video settings would also help. you should also try some other free games to see if the problem only applies to CS:GO or if it applies to every title.
