Re: Confused about 19.2; is it long term or beta? (off-topic part)

How can you use Tina Turner as a way to introduce Linux Mint,I sure hope she is getting paid for being used as an advertisement. for Linux Mint...19.2. Cause I can say is I will never upgrade base on Tina Turner.I will go to another Distro like Debian.....maybe you will dissapprove this post like S...

Re: So i tried zorin and pop_os

I was disappointed when System76 decided to make their own distro. Maybe more than disappointed, borderline angry. There are hundreds of distros. There are at least a dozen good ones. They couldn't use one of those? If there was something else they wanted to do, they couldn't use all the development...

Re: Difference between Linux Mint and Ubuntu

I've tried both...that's why I use Linux Mint...say no more :D and the fact Canonical is partnered with Micro$oft would put off anyone. http://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/mad/mad0077.gif   There was a definite lack of understanding about what that relationship is in that statement. Re: I have finally stopped distro hopping!

I've bounced around some and also settled on Mint. I don't know for sure it is the best, (my testing wasn't exactly scientific), but it's certainly up there. What I like is the way the devs pay attention to the tiny details other distros don't. A couple of examples. They recently added they function...

Re: Snaps. Why? Please stop.

There is no shortage of Linux software bieng developed today. This is apparently not a sufficient detractor. That's a matter of opinion. There are plenty of things that I cannot find applications for that work as well as what is available in Windows. The downsides of moving away from a single unifi...

@jackmg: kudo's for taking the time and effort to respond. :) Indeed, thanks for responding. Since you have had good experiences with Mint in the past and are openly sharing your experiences, the user community can probably track down the cause and hopefully improve Mint for everyone. In-place upgr...

Re: Another Design Discussion: Properties and Media Files

Nemo-mediainfo-tab is indeed a nice addition. Thanks for pointing it out! It also gives resolution and compression info for photos as well. I think this should definitely be pre-installed unless there is some compelling reason not to do so. It improves Mint in an obvious way by just installing one p...

Re: Help! Newbie technical advice needed

It might be better this way so that you can choose the exact distribution you want. Of course, I recommend Mint for most people/use cases. Which flavour is a subject of much debate but they are all fine. I use Cinnamon and that should be fine. They are all plenty configurable.

Re: Choosing new PC for Linux, thoughts and advice wanted

One thing to consider when deciding i3 vs i5 and 8 GB vs 16 GB is whether you think you'll be running virtual machines doing any significant load. I would say even if you don't think you will, there is a good chance you will wind up wanting to do that. The difference between i3 and i5 is pretty sign...

Re: How does package management compare between LMDE and Mint 19?

Both use the same package management system , however the base packages themselves are different between Debian (thus LMDE) and Ubuntu (thus Mint 19.) Not all .deb packages for Debian will work on Ubuntu and vice-versa. Running Mint 19, whenever you see installation instruction on websites for Ubunt...

Re: VirtualBox shared folders

Thanks for the help, everyone. I've got it working now. It was something I wasn't even thinking of but I should have been - not the first time this has burned me. VirtualBox was running under Firejail. When I installed Firejail, I used firecfg to automatically set up sandboxing for all installed app...

[SOLVED] VirtualBox shared folders

Hello, I'm having an issue with shared folders. (they don't work.) My host is Mint 19 and my guest in Mint 19. I'm running the network in bridged mode. I have guest additions installed. A created the share with AutoMount set to yes. I've turned the firewall off on both host and guest. If it matters,...

Re: Google Chrome

The short answer is yes. I'm surprised you see a big difference, though. The newer versions of Firefox are very fast. You could also consider Chromium which is fully open-source and forms the base of Chrome but is lacking a couple of media codecs, etc. If you install Chromium, navigate to about:sand...

Re: File Synch across the network

First use Nemo (or whatever) to go to the destination - make sure "smb://server.local/data/Documents/Access/Stamps" is in your address bar and try to create a file. Make sure you have write access. If that works, does the mirror work with rsync? rsync -avhuW --progress /home/leigh/Documents/Stamps/ ...

Re: Linux Mint, Wine 3.0, Photoline32 V21

I think it is unlikely that LXDE vs. Cinnamon is the difference. It is more likely that your wineconfig (prefix) is not configured the same way. Is it possible that in your LXDE install you had installed other software in Wine, or had performed other changes either with wineconfig or with winetricks?

Re: Mint Debian Editon 3 VS Mint Cinnamon19

LMDE is rolling release, so potentially less stable. It is not as widely used. As mentioned, it doesn't support PPAs. It may require more technical understanding to get it to do what you want. And it is more of a test bed than anything else (although it is fine to use.) Really, I think the bottom li...

How come the 'Firewall' in Linux Mint isn't turned on by default?
In Mint 19.1 the welcome wizard has a step for setting up the firewall. Not sure why it was absent previously.

nemo far more stable and responsive than windows explorer
Really? I certainly haven't found this to be true, although I happily note that the release notes for 19.1 say that Nemo has been heavily optimized.

Re: ‘Five Eyes’ governments call on tech giants to build encryption backdoors — or else

This is all so bizarre to me... Not that the governments WANT to do this but that they are stupid enough to think this is viable... Building a "back door" into encryption basically weakens the encryption to the point of being practically useless. I know of no noteworthy cryptologist who has stated t...
