Hello, I have always been puzzled by the emphasis on the different desktops, Is it necessary to completely reinstall to achieve a different desktop, isnt it possible to put whatever you like on the desktop ? I guess I simply don't understand the difference between things like Cinnamon, Mate, and XFC...

Can I somehow interrupt the boot sequence and login as root and then be able to see what it thinks my password becomes after I have logged in ? It accepts what I think my password is when it lets me log in, but then it does not recognise it when it asks me to authorise updates. So are there two look...

Had another look and found the .bashrc in ~/ ............. must have been looking with my eyes shut the first time.

Puzzling thing is that those aliases are not in that file, will see if I can find where they are.
