Re: Mint is like the cigarettes and should come with a warning

The comparison doesn't hold up. Linux Mint isn't a cause for at least a dozen types of cancer like cigarettes. Nor does it cost hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars a year to use. It's quite the opposite. Linux Mint is more like quitting smoking. Clearly you don't get the joke (sort of). Once you...

Re: Mint is like the cigarettes and should come with a warning

I'd love to print that on my recovery CDs..... problem is, I don't use CDs any more! It won't fit on a memory stick.....:D If you know how to edit the wallpaper of the live environment, you can place that inscription on it with huge bright characters, so that it's first thing the user will see when...

Mint is like the cigarettes and should come with a warning

I've never thought in my life I'd reach a point where I will not wanna hear about Windows anymore, let alone going back it. But that day came quite recently. I don't know about yourselves, but I think I became a Mint addict. Therefore I think Mint (and Linux in general) should come with a warning on...

Modifying a distro

I keep reading about people (some of which from my country) who modified a distro to match their taste and then put that modified distro in an ISO and when you install that modified distro from the ISO, it installs like the regular distro but in the end you get a modified one. So my question is: how...

Re: Conky Instllation Problem

Mint 19 has issues with conky and many other programs. That's why I keep running 18.3. The latest isn't always better - understand that finally.

Re: Where is nano?

I'm happy with gedit - it opens almost everything, including xml files. And it's a lot better than nano. And nano is a CLI editor, so you can't open it as a regular GUI program. If you wanna open nano, you just have to open terminal and type nano . This will change the appearance of the terminal - t...

Re: [SOLVED] Seahorse and its uselessness

It seems you're more advanced than me, so forgive me for the stupid question, but what's the point in combining autoremove with purge? Autoremove removes everything - both the program and its dependencies.

Re: Seahorse and its uselessness

apt purge seahorse displayed a bunch of packages about which the system said they're no longer necessary or used, so I used sudo apt autoremove seahorse which cleaned nearly 200 MB of space (the purge command would only remove the program itself but not its dependencies). I performed a system reboo...

[SOLVED] Seahorse and its uselessness

I noticed 18.3 has a program called Seahorse and it seems to be some kind of a "password and keys" manager. I wonder - what will happen if I uninstall it? I've been using 18.3 for 9 months already and for that time I didn't have to use Seahorse at all. I tend to uninstall software I don't need. If t...

Re: Where can the source code of 4.15 kernel can be downloaded from?

Sounds like I'd better go to LMDE, since it's unclear whether my friend will be able to cope with the code and Mint team has no intention to remove that microcode dependency.

Where can the source code of 4.15 kernel can be downloaded from?

I'm asking for a friend who doesn't want to create an account here (too paranoid, I guess) and ask for himself. He's a programmer and I asked him if he can remove the dependency for the microcode. But he mostly writes Windows programs and doesn't know where he can get the source of the 4.15 kernel. ...

Re: Poll: are forums password requirements too complicated?

It has been suggested that the forums password requirements are too complicated: Password must be between 10 characters and 32 characters long, must contain letters in mixed case, must contain numbers and must contain symbols. What do you think? Nope. My passwords usually exceed the minimum number ...

Re: How to Spoil the Stew, and guarantee a new user will never come back

This forum is something of an exception in being very friendly and tolerant to newcomers . That's because most people here still remember what it feels like to be a newbie and that no one was born taught. That's why after trying about a dozen distroes I came back to Mint. First, Mint is the most us...
