Re: POLL: Do you use /swap, /swapfile, zswap or no swap at all?

I generally work with 8 GB and have already gone up to 32 GB, so the "need" for a swap partition or file is completely foreign to me. A lot of it depends on your software usage. For example, if you find Cinnamon or GNOME are slowing you down, switch to Xfce, MATE, or LXQt (if you're not ye...

Re: Stable vs Rolling, another look

For stable releases, I recommend Devuan (as close to old school Debian as possible). Even their "unstable" branch (Ceres, which is the Devuan equivalent to Sid) is way more stable than other "stable" distros. For rolling releases, I recommend Artix GNU/Linux. It's a lot more stab...

Re: LMDE compared to Debian & Mint?

As others have said, it's basically Debian with GNU/Linux Mint repositories included for people who like the beginner-friendly aspects of the distro, plus distro-specific configurations that are more minimalist-minded than the regular Ubuntu build. Sometimes, you get to a point where less is more. T...

Re: Deliver Me From "SYSTEMD" HELL!

Interestingly, I was checking out Devuan again today, and noticed they have something in development (unstable ceres) which I may be interested in for sure, since it will allow MATE or Cinnamon desktops + others, instead of just XFCE. They are now distrowatch #44 which is only two below Ubuntu MATE...

Re: LMDE main focus?

What if the developers considered basing the kernel on Devuan's (a non-Systemd fork of Debian, and just that), while allowing advanced users to select an init on a new install prompt (e.g. Systemd, OpenRC, SysVinit, Runit, Minit, InitNG)? That would solve the (many) issues people have been having wi...

Re: [SOLVED] how to install lm20 WITHOUT systemd, or remove it from LM 19

already downloaded it, but not yet installed! :D I have a partition, now occupied by a malfunctioning LM19.3, ready and waiting for it. I should try it too at some point. What is slightly putting me off is the statement on their website about using only packages from their repositories because othe...

Re: Manjaro - what's the big deal

I'd consider Artix GNU/Linux to be the perfect middle ground. Not too upstream, but also not too outdated. It's pretty stable.

Re: If Mint did decide to migrate the main edition to LMDE...

If that happened, that would be a lot better than relying on Canonical's Ubuntu as the default. You do have more technical flexibility with a Debian base, since non-free software isn't enabled by default. You might need to enable that in the repositories to get a certain driver or two working, but o...

Re: 19.3 to 20 - complete failure, extremely angry

Devuan is the only real choice nowadays for a Debian-based system that offers init freedom (Runit rules!). I held out for as long as I could with GNU/Linux Mint 18.3, but support ends in less than a year and PPAs aren't ideal for up-to-date software management. It was great while it lasted, but I do...

Re: [Howto] Install latest youtube-dl on LM20

In this case, updating to the latest build is extremely important, because Google continues to mess up the code and make it very difficult to download or stream (using Mpv or similar). :P

Also, this is very handy for clearing up 403 errors:

Code: Select all

Re: My time has come :(

I was in that situation with 18.3, but I only held on because I don't like being forced to use Systemd. If I could've used Runit or another init with GNU/Linux Mint, I would have stayed, since I'm tired of dealing with Poetteringcrap (e.g. PulseAudio, Avahi). That's when I decided it was time to mov...

I wouldn't recommend Manjaro at all. Artix GNU/Linux is more user-friendly, while having the latest packages ready.

Here's another method you could also try: $ wget -O - https://yt-dl.org/downloads/latest/youtube-dl | sudo tee /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl >/dev/null $ sudo chmod a+x /usr/local/bin/youtube-dl Check the current version and upgrade (if outdated): $ youtube-dl --version $ sudo youtube-dl -U I do this my...

Cinnamon isn't meant for laptops or older desktops *cough* *splutter* ...what? Have I been doing it wrong all along? I don't think I have... Why on earth do you think that Cinnamon isn't meant for laptops? Sorry for the confusion. That was my wording at the time, but I actually meant to say...

Re: Deliver Me From "SYSTEMD" HELL!

Thanks for this thread. I'm still on LM 17.2 because of SystemD. (I tried upgrading to 17.3 but wasn't thrilled with the changes) I've been considering installing LM20 on my other partition, (I've had 2 boot partitions for upgrades since LM 13. Been using Mint for 8+ years, but it looks like I'll h...

Re: How is Mint 20 Compared to Mint 19?

I heard it's better than 19.x, but that's just the reality of software updates. Also, which DE and/or WM that you use will determine the results. Cinnamon isn't meant for laptops or older desktops, whereas MATE could take its place (if you have less than 2 GB of RAM, use LXDE). Xfce might be the mos...

Re: Can I still use 17.3?

GNU/Linux Mint 18.3 (with Xfce) was just perfect in every single way, and I used that version of the distro the longest without an upgrade (things didn't feel right anymore). It's just a shame that support ends next year, and very few updates via the official repositories will remain (aside from the...

Re: Deliver Me From "SYSTEMD" HELL!

Without thinking, ran the systemd command I always use (timedatectl set-local-rtc 1). MX told me to kick rocks. systemd not enabled, command not recognized. Able to change the setting in Date & Time, though. At least you got the warning. I didn't or missed seeing it in "depends" on my...

Re: Can I still use 17.3?

Pretty sure 18.x uses systemd. Nearly certain, even. If you want to escape systemd, MX Linux probably is the best alternative. Has, but not enabled by default. Or you can try antiX (same developers), which has fewer options but entirely systemd-free. While Systemd is near-impossible to purge (due t...

Re: Can I still use 17.3?

As someone who still uses 18.3, I can emphasize. The main reason I refuse to "upgrade" has to do with Systemd being forced as init. I actually tested an upgrade to 19.3 on a separate machine, and it was abysmal. A lot of my configs and other settings were totally ruined, even after updatin...
