Re: Is it possible to install Mint on Standard Android Mini-PCs?

OK Thank you all for the information. BTW, there is MintBox, but unfortunately it costs $300-350, that's 1 order of magnitude different than a $30-35 Anrdoid Mini-PC.. which can achieve really nice results.. With the price of a MintBox, it is wiser (IMHO) to simply buy a regular PC - completely modu...

Re: Is it possible to install Mint on Standard Android Mini-PCs?

karlchen, you raised an interesting subject.. For Mint to be able to run on ARM, Linux's Kernel needs to run on ARM. Is Linux's Kernel adapted to ARM too? If yes, then Mint on ARM is feasible (with some extra work, for the Mint part..). If not, then it's impossible to talk about Mint on ARM, before ...

Re: Is it possible to install Mint on Standard Android Mini-PCs?

Thank you karlchen
Good answer.

Is there maybe an email address, or a place where I can recommend the creators of Linux Mint to consider adding support for ARM CPUs?

Adding support for ARM CPUs means opening Mint to a huge market of mini computers, that are extremely affordable (30$ as you saw)..

Is it possible to install Mint on Standard Android Mini-PCs?

Hi If you go to the chinese web-stores today, you will see various models of Android Mini-PCs, being sold for really cheap prices, that start from around $30. (even less than that, on days that have sales) Example: https://www.aliexpress.com/store/product/Tanix-TX3-Max-Smart-TV-Box-Android-7-1-Amlog...

Re: Linux Mint Live USB with Persistent Partition: how?

I think the developer of that screen should change it. In 99.9% of the cases, a user would need the boot loader and the boot partition to be on the same physical drive. For the rare case where someone would think about a reason not to do so, this should only be enables via some special checkbox that...

Re: Linux Mint Live USB with Persistent Partition: how?

This Grub is so problematic?

It's impossible to Install Mint without it?
(for example if one is installing only Mint, without doing MultiBoot or anything special)

Re: Linux Mint Live USB with Persistent Partition: how?

Did it mess up grub on /dev/sda with /dev/sdc selected for bootloader install? Also, was this under Legacy BIOS or UEFI mode? Maybe he didn't select the USB HDD on the bottom ComboBox, like Mute Ant noted? Along the Something Else route you need to specify that the boot-loader GRUB should go to the...

Re: Linux Mint Live USB with Persistent Partition: how?

I expect most newer devices wouldn't have an issue booting from USB though (regardless of HDD or flash drive). Does a BIOS boot from USB 3 device as well as it does from USB 2 devices?? And when it boots from a USB 3 device, does it work in USB 3 mode or USB 2 mode? I ask this because when you conn...

The JMicron is probably fine, though.
I think my old USB 2.0 enclosure has JMicron. I think the only options are ASMedia and JMicron anyway so not really a large pool to choose from.
Yeah those 2 repeat themselves..
With some people preferring the first, and some people preferring the second

Re: Linux Mint Live USB with Persistent Partition: how?

I've found a supplier in Hong Kong selling them for £1.20 including postage & packaging You're not talking about the exact same thing that I gave in the link, but you talk generally about a USB<->SATA Adapter, right? Yes, in eBay you can find such for less than the already cheap price that I paid. ...

Re: Linux Mint Live USB with Persistent Partition: how?

I don't baby it at all but at the rate it's going, it'll be 90+ years before its Media Wear Indicator hits 0 and another 180 years before it actually uses up all its P/E cycles. In this rate the SSD will outlive me... I believe majority of SSD failures so far have not been due to NAND wear Right Fr...

Re: Linux Mint Live USB with Persistent Partition: how?

For me, keeping the history (at least for the last 2 months) is important. Hence, the switch to portable HDDs/SSDs. Ended up with a performance gain, too, so win-win. :D I recently moved to SSD in my computer. It's a good one (Samsung 860 EVO), and altho I am sure it has a good controller with a go...

Re: Linux Mint Live USB with Persistent Partition: how?

Interesting.. So you can still use them. Did their controller mark the bad bits as non-usable, and you don't get any errors any more? (from the specific parts that were ruined already) (did you try to run CHKDSK/F in Windows on them, to see that the bad parts were taken out of use?) BTW, maybe from ...

Re: Linux Mint Live USB with Persistent Partition: how?

It was the same file (iirc, places/history?) that got corrupted on three separate occasions so it's the logical assumption. I had a robocopy job for backup and that's where it falters. Oh.. File Corruption is a nice way to isolate the cause.. But I am curious: If a certain part of the Flash Memory ...

Re: Linux Mint Live USB with Persistent Partition: how?

PortableApps . That's one of the things I'm looking for a Linux alternative. I had LibreOffice, Notepad++, Calibre, etc. on there, too. Firefox was the most used (daily 8+ hr usage). Well, Notepad++, too but that one doesn't write to the disk much. Oh.. BTW, is there a way to be sure that FF's SQLi...

Re: Linux Mint Live USB with Persistent Partition: how?

One big pro of the Kingston is it's solid construction, it has the best retractable connector of all sticks and still opens and closes as firm as when new. You can have it in your bag or your pocket and it will survive. Yes its casing is good, but many other Mfrrs have models that have a thick plas...

Re: Linux Mint Live USB with Persistent Partition: how?

My primary OS is still Windows 7. (I refuse to use Windows 10) My primary OS is Windows XP SP3 :) I refused to use anything that came after it. Tho lately I am becoming a bit "open", and in the next days I will be installing Windows 7 on a VM, to play with. (tho no plans to leave XP, even in 10 yea...
